AT&T Mobility announces Dell’s new smartphone

Thanks to a slip of the tongue during a panel at MWC 2009, AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega stated that “Dell announced they’re entering the smartphone market.” Oops. Rumors suggesting Dell is ready to take the plunge and offer up a new smartphone have been circulating for quite some time now, but no such official announcement has come out the Dell camp at MWC thus far. Perhaps this comment by de la Vega is a harbinger of good things to come? Put it this way: Either Dell has something in store for us some time over the next couple of days, or Ralphie needs to lay off the single malts.

UPDATE: del la Vega claims he was misquoted and knows nothing of a Dell smartphone beyond the rumors we’ve all been hearing.

    There are rumors going around within the company that we might start selling Dell laptops with laptop connect build in and a contract at the retail stores. Maybe Ralph said something about that and was mis-quoted by BG.

    This rumor has been rampant since Dell stole Ron Garriques away from Motorola back in 2007. I hope it’s true- it would be nice to see another U.S. company jump in the game. The obvious OS platform IMHO would likely be Windows Mobile and/or Andrioid. -Alex Gajano

    Too bad. Dell in my mind has the potential to be a new Sony, only for computing. I know Steve Jobs said he wanted Apple to be that, But, Sony was never that expensive.

    Despite customer service not being as good as it used to be and that nagging thing where you having to supply your phone number multiple times when you call them, they still rank at their top of their industry. From reading around, the Dell Mini is about the best designed netbook out there. I love that Dell sells Ubuntu laptops. If a Dell Android phone came out, I may just be in love. Well, not in love, but aware that there’s a brand name in computing devices I can check out and buy items from as regularly as I buy Sony home entertainment pieces. I’m already looking at Dell stock. They’ve taken a beating over the last couple of years.

    Apple for the high end proprietary solutions and Dell for lower cost open source solutions in the consumer computing market would be perfect.

    Seeing Dell introduce Ubuntu laptops. Then with how well the Dell Mini was reviewed, and especially that you can purchase it with Linux was what rekindled my interest in Dell.

    I’m hoping a 10″ touchscreen Mini comes out this year, which I would definitely be forking out the cash for.

    Dell just needs to get it overwith we know its coming we know it won’t be anything special.. Maybe that’s why it hasn’t released

    Everyone I know who has AT&T as a cell phone provider are complaining about their bad customer service.
    I’ve chose to stay with Sprint because at least they work hard to fix any issue you have with their customer service. Take a page from Sprints book AT&T. Oh and I’m just a regular consumer whose opinion matters.
