London police welcome you to report crimes via SMS

Services

The next time you’re in London and witness something that isn’t quite right (perhaps a Chav stealing a bottle of Buckfast Tonic Wine at the local offie) don’t be shy – hit up the Metropolitan Police Service and report what you’re seeing via SMS. All you need to do is send your location, what you saw and your name to 07940 500 500.  Okay, so the service was created with those who are hard of hearing or have a speech impediment in mind, but that’s not to say those without the aforementioned conditions can’t report a crime via SMS. You’d not only be doing your civic duty by reporting a crime in progress but you’d also be saving your precious talk time minutes.

That’s also handy if you may be close enough to be heard talking. Or if your cellphone makes noise when dialling 911/999.

“…he has received nine special commendations, achieved highest arrest record for any officer in the Met and sustained three injuries in the line of duty, most recently in December when wounded by a man dressed as Father Christmas.”

I’m not sure if I’m detecting sarcasm in that article but I think that’s brilliant! A lot of people can text with their cellphone in their pocket and whatnot. Pulling the cellphone to your ear is hardly inconspicuous. Is it possible to do anything like that in the US?

Yes. Simply attempt to text while driving in your car — the cops will be on you in no time.

Yes the epitome of Londons Finest Simon Pegg and Nick Frost .

Anyway that method of being a tipster has been implemented in NYC for a few months already .

One thing to remember here is that this service is for use in non-emergency situations. As far as I know, carriers are not able to guarantee instant SMS delivery. So, imagine how upset you will be if you texted while you are in a hold-up and the police respond after the criminals have left because they just got your text an hour later. However, having said that, it is a very useful service for other cases like tips, community outreach, etc.
