Feeling courageous? Create your own customized BlackBerry OS

General

One of the suckiest things about playing with beta OS builds for any BlackBerry device is that you’re never quite sure what you’re going to get in terms of reliability and performance. One build might make your device of choice super snappy but come at the price of reception thus making your life a living hell. Thankfully, a wonderful tutorial has been written that lets the layperson cut out the bad elements of a given OS and splice together all of the goodness from another, thus creating a super OS build that RIM could only dream about. So with that in mind, we’re going to be going over how you can make your very own OS build that has killer reception and great responsiveness from the OS that was sent in to us by Sith_Apprentice.

  1. Download the OS that gave your BlackBerry the best reception and the OS that made your BlackBerry work best sans reception and install them both
  2. Go to C:Program FilesCommon FilesResearch in MotionSharedLoader Files and open up the folder for the OS build that has the best reception and copy the lone file inside its GSM/UMTS/CDMA folder
  3. Copy the lone radio file into the GSM/UMTS/CDMA folder of the OS build with the best functionality
  4. Update your device with the custom OS via Loader.exe

Once Loader.exe is done its thing you’re good to go with your custom BlackBerry OS.

Thanks, Sith!

I’ve heard from numerous people that the file you’re supposed to move using this method isn’t a “radio” file, it contains radio code in addition to numerous OS elements. So you may end up losing a thing or two in the process.

can anyone confirm if this will let you transfer over the media file from either the bold or the curve 8900 so you can have all of there default ringtones?????

I wonder if you could use the files for the browser from OS 4.3 so that you can get streaming music when the browser is sent to the background. Probably wishful thinking, plus I don’t want to brick my device.

This isn’t as easy as BG says. I have been following this over at Crackberry.com. I for sure wouldn’t try it.

This is a solid work around to giving you the best radio that was in .90 that for some reason .99 lost.
