Samsung out-Nokias Nokia; More Acme i8910 shots and specs revealed

Rumor

Samsung: Hear and hear us clearly. Bring this phone… To the US… With WCDMA 850/1900… Now! We first told you about Wile E.’s wonder phone this past Thursday as blurrycam shots were leaked along with preliminary specs. Yes, it was sexy then. Now that we have some higher-quality shots and S60 5th Edition has become a fact rather than just an unsubstantiated theory, this thing can’t come around soon enough. This isn’t the first time Samsung has taken Nokia’s S60 operating system and stuffed it into a handset way more drool-worthy than any Finnish phone on the market, but this could very well be the widest margin by which Samsung has out-Nokiaed Nokia yet. Let’s take a look at the specs we knew about already along with the few (but pretty huge) new details that have come along with these high-quality shots (bold):

  • 8 GB and 16 GB versions
  • Symbian S60 5th Edition OS
  • Glass AMOLED touchscreen display
  • 8 megapixel camera with 9x digital zoom
  • Secondary front-facing camera
  • HD video recording
  • DLNA and DivX support
  • HDMI output
  • 3.5mm audio jack
  • Wi-Fi
  • GPS

So far Nokia has officially announced two S60 5th Edition handsets, the 5800 XpressMusic and the N97. Only one has reached market thus far of course but we won’t even bother comparing it to the i8910. That leaves the N97 and it’s a very good thing it packs a physical keypad because we can’t see any other reason someone might opt for the N97 over this beast of a handset. Now more than ever, MWC can’t come soon enough. Hit the jump for more pics including a side-by-side with a BlackBerry Storm for size comparison.

The phone looks good. Can Android be installed on it?

I don’t understand why the iPhone came up either, but it looks like the only possible thing that the iPhone still has in its corner is its easier UI (though v5 isn’t “difficult” by any means) and the app store. Other than that, if the blatant difference in hardware isn’t enough to make even the most diehard iPhone user at least acknowledge the better specs, then it just proves they’ve been trolling since the original N95.

As Eric said, the lack of Nokia solutions might be a dealbreaker though. Ovi has integrated its way into my life through several different facets and I don’t do enough media capturing to give that up so easily.

For whoever asked, the screen res will probably be the same as the other v5 devices, widescreen 640×360.

    O. M. G. !!!!

    Glass screen means capacitive…

    8 megapixel – it looks like the i8510 (INNOV8) an M8800?T929 (Pixon/Memoir) camera or :)

No xenon flash though – hope the lens cover remains.

iPhone lovers, you are not stuck to Apple crap with this, and dont forget the camera, aslo GPS that works unlike the one in iPhone 3g

No, it’s no iPhone. It’s an i8910 w/ a bigger screen, ridiculously better camera, HD recording capabilities, HDMI out(on a phone), DLNA, DiVX, and Symbian s60 v.5- dumb**** read a post first. It’s not an iPhone. It’s a better phone. (not dumbed down for my granny to use.)

looks pretty cool. still, I think I’ll wait for the Nokia N97 – gotta love that keyboard hidden under the nice big hi res screen…

Ok let’s look at what we know and don’t know. I like the AMOLED touch screen and the HD video recording on a mobile device… That’s cool right!

The 8MP thing does nothing for me because without the right lensing and sensor, the photo will be rubbish if ever printed in full resolution. Nokia use Carl Zeiss lensing and LG use Schneider-Kreuznach. I personally use a video recorder with a Carl Zeiss lens and even the 3.15MP Nokia N93i has proven to produce sharper, clearer images than the 8MP camera phones being released now. So when Zach Epstein says let us not even compare to the Nokia 5800 Xpress, I would be willing to put it back in the race.

Eric in Cupertino mentioned in his comment asking about share online or podcasting which we know many devices will do these days. Without being able to put my media to good use, I find myself getting frustrated.

The iPhone is great, but with limited usage and not even push email, I tend to look to the others. A Blackberry, A windows mobile, or I hate to say it again Zach, but the Nokia 5800 Xpress music will run windows mail for exhange. Not to mention it also downloads music over the air and has many touch points for easy use such as contacts bar and media bar.

Thank you Samsung for this device, I will be interested to play. Be interesting to see the HD recording, however I know when it comes to humanised features, there are better devices. In no disrespect to the publisher of the above article, I will most likely buy a 5800 and leave the Samsung for the rest of you.
