Right on time: Fido launches the BlackBerry Pearl 8100

General

We said it, you doubted, we said it again and now it’s finally here – Fido has launched the BlackBerry Pearl 8100. That’s right – it’s 2009 and a wireless carrier just launched the Pearl 8100. Okay, so the 8100 is pretty much obsolete at this point and the fact that Fido has the nerve to ask for $400 month-to-month or $25 over 3-years is nothing short of absolutely insane. Hey, nothing is stopping you from bringing in something hot like a Bold or Curve 8900 instead. God knows you’ve earned it for being so patient during the long, arduous wait! Anyway, just like we said the data plans are as follows:

  • $15 – Unlimited personal email and IM
  • $25 – 500MB
  • $30 – 1GB
  • $60 – 3GB

Happy now, Canada?

Of course they’re launching with the Pearl. They’re owned by Rogers, and Rogers doesn’t want to give anyone an excuse to move over to Fido. If you want a real device on EDGE/3G, you either go with Rogers or wait for Globalive and DAVE to launch their networks later this year. Or you buy a BB off of ebay and use Fido.

You know, the Pearl Flip is now $9.99 on a 3 year term at Rogers. It may just be a Valentines promotion but cant they give Fido some promo pricing? I would not pay $25 for the 8100, let alone $400.

And those data prices are a rip off as well. Even I think Im getting riped off with Rogers with one of their value packs, and its way better than this.

    Isn’t the Pearl ancient history?

if I get the 15$ plan is the IM only for bbmessenger, or can I use gtalk and msn???

  • MadMike

I would seriously love to be able to speak to the chief officers of the Canadian wireless carriers face to face and ask them point blank: “How fucking stupid and greedy are you bastards?”

I am so glad I don’t live in Canada. That, socialized health care and the Half French – would drive me postal.

    LMAO…

Its been a long time but I can finally use my BB with my cityfido phone package!
It took two times as the first customer service agent just added a data package, not the BB data package.
Rockin’ phresssh data now! Paying too much for it but its finally streaming smooth…

Bet your sweet tushy i’m happy!!!!.
    Thanx.

Be happy, very happy. The last time Fido offered Blackberry data packages, the cheapest was $40 for 7 MB (yes, megabytes).

Now you get 1 GB (1,024 MB) for $10 LESS.

Besides, as if many people actually use a gig on a Blackberry, especially an EDGE one! LOL. Even 95% of iPhone users don’t reach 1 GB.

    Regards.

Is this a joke? 60 for a PEARL??? I meen I started with a Pearl, but my plan sans minutes was 24 a month after discount. How in the world can they charge that much??? An VZW’s is unlimited.

    @MadMike

Your bigoted remarks are entirely inexcusable. Go **** yourself.

  • KSmithInNY

lmao @ Mike. You made the Canadians mad. Reminds me of a joke.

A guy walks into a Canadian thrift shop and sees a military riffle on the wall with a sign
“For sale: Never fired, only dropped once”

    :0)

  • FC1

Nope. I can appreciate a good Canadian joke. I don’t tolerate disparaging and unwarranted remarks about the Quebecois.

As the non-Canadians can tell… that whole “french and english in the same country” thing can be a bit of a loaded situation… Although I heartily appreciate MadMike’s sentiments towards wireless carriers.

@phillybandit: According to their FAQ, it included Gtalk and MSN (and I think Yahoo Messenger, although I’ve never met anyone in Canada who uses it).

Anyone know how the 8100 works with location-based services? Can it use cell-tower location for things like Google Maps?

  • D-Minus

    You ignorant American.

  • BrianCA

@KSmithInNY It was an American rifle :0)

As a Canadian, **** the quebecers. Half the cereal box wasted with french on it. And don’t get me going on Celine Dion.

  • MadMike

The fucking Québécois are stuck-up, self indulged, arrogant pugs. I have my reasons for not liking them. Your violent fervor to their defense, furthers my point.

  • RL

when’s the curve n bold coming to fido?

  • Ben

First, I’d never go for a BB let alone the pearl with its dumb keypad.

Secondly, I pitty the fools who didn’t jump on board with the $30 6GB data plan that fido and rogers were offering. It’s not great but it certainly beats $25 for 512MB or $30 for 1GB, or WTF $60 – 3GB – Double for half!!!! LMAO.

Finally, Canada’s not that bad. French is limited to 2 maybe 2.5 provences, and really the whole half English, half French is only present in a handfull of cities. Mostly it’s either all English (most cities) or all French (like I said 2.5 provences, and that’s being generous). Something like the ammount of Spanish in the US.

P.S. I wouldn’t be so kind to ask the fat cats of the Canadian wireless companies. I’d just pop’em one. The Bull’ the come up with to justify themselves. Luckily we’re not in Australia.

Waiting for: HTC Touch Pro on Fido

as a fido employee this is like the last thing that can save fido no one really buys the pearl anymore.i had so many calls of cx who had unlocked bb and couldn’t get a bb packge was expired in june 2008 and left to rogers now they can finally take advantage of it.if this hole blackberry ain’t saving them in one year max fido will be completly just rogers they may have some of the best plans but there phone are more than mediocre.and the best they have is iphone and samsung jack.and to get the iphone is a living hell especially if ur looking to renew agreement total mess

  • krisz

I use roger phone with fido package (bb 8900) because the 8100 sucks and old like hell!!!!!
