Samsung to announce 12 megapixel handset at upcoming MWC 2009?

Rumor

samsung 12MP

Samsung may have a megapixel or two (or twelve) up its sleeve for the upcoming MWC 2009 expo in Barcelona. According to leaked information from two Korean news sources, Samsung is expected to debut a 12 megapixel camera phone that builds upon the success of the 8 megapixel Innov8. The only relevant information available is that Samsung may begin mass production at the end of February with a European launch soon thereafter. Anyone hungry for additional details about this mobile shooter and whether the optics behind the 12 megapixel will live up to the marketing hype will have to wait a few more weeks for that information to materialize.

This is nice & everything but not to many people buy phones base on how many megs is the camera capable of

Megapixels means nothing in these devices. Which is better, a 12mp with nothing else special v. an 8 mp with a good lens and flash?

People buy on the “more is better” mentality.
1020P must be better than 720p, 12 megapixels must be better than 8 megapixels.
If you don’t think people buy based on the more is better mentality, then explain why you couldn’t get into a Circuit City lot a couple of Saturday’s ago when the liquidator jacked up the price to retail, then took 10% off.

@p51d007, yeah but buying a phone (a phone) just based on the camera is like buying a f*ckup car just cause it has new and shiny tires, what about the engine?

I’m so tired of hearing the same inane arguments about better megapixels not equalling better quality photos. Enough with this already!
Fact is, a Nokia 5mpx camera is visually (imo) not as good as the Samsung Innov8′s 8mpx camera. The samsung’s pic is sharper, colors are vivid, all these things DO FACTOR into anyone who wants to buy a camera phone.
I carried an N95 for the longest time, because I was a dj and didn’t need a smart phone, yet needed a phone with a more than decent camera to take pics of some of the gigs I’m at to put up on websites.
Now that I work for a Fortune 500 company, I do need a smart phone, but an N82 is more than enough for my company needs, as well as giving me a 5mpx camera with Xenon flash. And if the samsung 12 mpx does come with Symbian OS 3 with push email, and xenon flash.. I’d sure as hell jump on that line to buy it.

Reasons to buy a phone JUST based on the camera.

    Must Haves
    1. AutoFocus(macro modes are a Huge plus for cell phone camera users)
    2. Flash
    3. Not Crappy Zoom(high megapixel + good digi zoom is sortof ok)
    4. Image Stabilization
    5. >3< mega pixels or greater for point and shoot

12MP is crap if you dont take care of the other 4.

2MP is definitely a lot of pixels though. Id like to see what they have planned.

    Good on Samsung

However, 12Mpix in a small form factor -> smaller pixels -> less photons falling on each pixel -> lower signal to noise ratio -> poorer low light performance.

May work great in good ambient lighting conditions, but may be a disappointment unless the illumination (flash), image processing and the lens are all top class.

While megapixels don’t automatically mean better pictures, at least with Samsung and Nokia, there seems to be a unilateral improvement with both resolution and quality. The i8510′s 8MP camera, for example, is superb as far as cameraphones go. Typically a larger MP count is just a metaphor for overall improved quality in processing and optics. The only company in which this doesn’t really apply, in my opinion, is Sony Ericsson, in which a 8MP camera has the same overall quality as a 5MP unit.
