Upcoming Rogers smartphone plans leave data users high and dry, again

Services

Just like the last time Rogers updated its smartphone plans, we’re torn between loving them and hating them. While they do include a taste of everything for what are pretty reasonable prices for the Canadian wireless marketplace, we can’t stand how Rogers insists upon making its customers choose between a smartphone plan with a completely crap amount of data or another plan entirely. We get that from Rogers’ point of view it’s a “smartphone plan” because it has data included, but 500MB is not a lot of data at all – especially when Rogers touts the fact that tethering is included. Hit up the jump to check out the plans (all prices are CAD).

$45 Smartphone Plan

  • 250 daytime minutes
  • Evenings and weekends at 9pm
  • Rogers to Rogers
  • 500MB data

$50 Smartphone Plan

  • 400 daytime minutes
  • Evenings and weekends at 9pm
  • Rogers to Rogers
  • 500MB data

$75 Smartphone Plan

  • 650 daytime minutes
  • Evenings and weekends at 9pm
  • Rogers to Rogers
  • 500MB data

With each of the new plans listed above, customers are permitted to choose one of the following add-ons: Free incoming calls, 5pm start to evening and weekend minutes, my5 Canada-Wide or Unlimited Network Calling.

Thanks, Mike!

What’s the difference between “Rogers to Rogers” (which is listed under each plan), versus the optional “Unlimited Network Calling” add-on ?

  • M to the K

Ouch. Those plans blow hard. I ended up calling Rogers and threatening to cancel, and they gave me 400 weekday/Rogers to Rogers/1000 Cdn long distance a month/2500 text msgs/6 gigs of data for 70 bucks a month (tax in). In conclusion, threaten the big company.

  • MaxPayne79

damn!, and I thought i was paying too much for 45 unlimited voice and 30 for 6gb for data with no access fees.
But this is some real bullshit right here.
Now im super excited to see what fido’s gonna dish out in the next few days.

  • David

Why do they call it “evenings and weekends” when it’s clearly SO OFF THE MARK. It should be more like “night time and weekends”.

UNLESSS you tether, there is no-way your using 500MB in a month on a BlackBerry.

Canadian cell phone companies suck on the whole. It’ll be another 5-10 years before the new competition enters the market and brings it on to reasonable prices/features

  • blu3xtc

The same $45 plan is $35 in the mid-west customers.

Most users don’t go over this much data.

iPhone Voice and Data Packages actually include between 1GB to 2GB of data.

These plans are only designed for Windows Mobile and BlackBerry smartphones.

Overage protection is available on these data plans, charged at $0.03 per MB and capped at $100 (including data portion already paid).

  • sirk76

The new Rogers plans you mention are actually in play already and have been for around two months i believe

  • MURANO

82% OF SMARTPHONE USERS ON ROGERS USE LESS THEN 500MB, FROM THAT 75% USE LESS THEN 100MB.
SO I AM NOT SURE WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT……

  • Mik

500MB is not bad for Canada. Remember most data plans used to be 1MB and Rogers said that was enough for anyone. Unlimited would be better, but 500MB is at least not offensive anymore.

I just should throw my two cents into this convo…

    500 mb = 256,000 emails approx. on a blackberry
500 mb = 25,000 email on an iphone or windows mobile

500 mb = 500 mins of youtube approx.

Who the hell needs more than that? I have a blackberry with 5 email accounts on it, i use the gps and browse the web all the time and never EVER go over 100mb….

Even telus users who get “unlimited data” are capped at 6gb, and would never touch that much data anyway….

If your one of those people who tethers your smartphone to your computer you might as well just buy something like the rocket stick and use it since they are free on a 1yr term and you can get a flexrate plan that caps you at $100 which gives you unlimited usage, or even just $30 for 500 mb, which is pretty good.

Why does everyone think they need “unlimited data” on a phone anyway?

  • gunltd

The only time you need more than 500MB is when you’re using a crap-phone…i mean iphone.
I’m always emailing, IM-ing, surfing websites (BGR included) and i havent gone over 50MB. I guess Rogers is basing their plan off the fact that most ppl really dont use that much data, but still, those are still too expensive. Which is why i’m not with them :)

  • MaxPayne79

well, i watch the news on my phone from various countries around the world both going to and coming home from work everyday and i end up using about 800MB of data a month. That’s including GPS if i need to and the web which is very rarely. And i have an e71 not an iphone, gunltd.

98% of rogers data customers stay under 500mb. A quarter million iphones sold with the 6G plan in the first few months or so, on single cx managed to breach. 35 dollars gets your all your voice mail call display whocalled mobile backup unlimted text and 500mb of data a month ontop of your voice. I use my phone for everything and use less than 100mb a week.

  • neo

Personally I’d be more concerned with minutes. Free Wifi is all over the place. I don’t understand why people burn so much MB on their cellphones, I mean come on, I understand if you’re in some sort of business and need that much bandwidth that’s understandable, but for the average user, 500MB is more than enough. Sine wifi is readily available than perhaps purchasing a netbook with wifi would be a safer investment than having to pay $100 plus dollars a month on a cellphone for the use of internet and data. (But if one has substantial amount of funds to purchase unlimited data, than what the heck, spend your money!!)

Lol my friend has an N95 8GB on rogers and he pays 7 bucks for unlimited 3.5G network XD UNLIMITED NET and it’s 7.2Mbps XD in his value pack he get all the basic crap and unlimited mobile browsing
and that’s the catch you can do anything with the Online mobile browsing XD so the 500Mb is a scam
20 buck value pack is cheaper

  • YouRemindMeOfAllTheThingsIHate

Kyuubi, no, the catch for your friend’s “unlimited mobile browsing” is just that.. mobile browsing. No downloading files, no uploading files, no third party applications that require an internet connection (ex. Google Maps, weather apps, RSS feeds, other browser besides the built in one) – is the real catch.

Anyways, the real reason for my post was to comment on the weak voice/data plan. I see the minutes increase, but not the data. The iPhone voice/data plans have both voice and data increase, why not this one too?

  • Kyuubi

I’m able to download from my unlocked E70 lol same with my friend and that’s the catch… Alot of people didn’t see it coming cause i use google maps on my EDGE network with my E70 for rogers and it still counts and normal data usage ;)

  • Kyuubi

I’m using opera Mini 4.2 on my E70 with unlimited mobile browsing and i use ebuddy, handy weather and the webkit browser as well XD lol and i download, stream, browse and on msn almost 24/7 on my phone i just need a faster phone and more powerful phone like the E71 but i’m getting the 5800Xm and then N97 soon ;) so that’s enough power and speed in both phones lol for me

    really guys?

on my berry when i had it, i was on 3G. i would do faebook all the time, get about 15-20 emails a day. stream internet radio a few hours a day and browse quite a bit and i did 150mb

than i got my iphone, used it just as much and i used 400 mb

ill admit i dont use it alot. probably as much as the AVERAGE consumer. considering berrys are mostly used for emails.

    500 mb is what?

    almost 120 000 emails on a berry? 7000 websites? in a month?

iphone is like 22000 emails, 3000 websites

you guys need to stop being such b*tchy complainers.

i bet most of you dont even touch 500mb your just greedy

  • TerrorX

I have a Bold and i am on msn on it constantly, i use my facebook app, gps, 2 email accounts, 3 weather reports, and many other data apps along with my browsing. I am pay $65 a month and i have 600 daytime minutes, caller id, name display, vm, who called, 10k txt’s 10k mms’, and 500mb data. I never tether but i am on 3gall of the time. rogers is already implementing the 3.5g network getting true up to 7.2mbps speeds. Telus and bell are currently jokes as with all CDMA failures. both of these companys are secretly developing a gsm 3g network because they know where the technology needs to go. 500mb on an iphone would go fast because they in all honesty were not designed to compress and save the consumer money. Like every other apple product they charge more for the same service everyone else gets. I like the iphone and all but it will never take the place my bold holds.

Wait and see how they will have competition soon enough without foreign company’s coming in.

I wish i could say a bit more about future BB’s but you will have to wait for whoever your leak is to let you know. that is if they even know..

BGR, any update? Were you guys wrong? Did Rogers change their plans?

  • rob

how can i check my data usage on line,i am on the 500g plan,i wout to make sure i don’t go over

  • Trek

How the hell can you stream music for 2 hours a day and possibly keep under your 500MB plan. Please tell me how you do that because I use Shoutcast and it uses exactly 1MB per minute so for a 500MB plan that I have that means I can only listen to 15 minutes of music a day and that leaves me no room to use my iPhone for anything else! I am majorly KICKING myself for not paying the $5 more to get the 6GB plan when I had the chance.

  • Fundydevil

does an iphone use more data than a regular cell phone?
