Google inadvertently leaks info about GDrive

General

Google

Thursday it was a reference to a new iPhone found embedded in an obscure file within the iPhone 2.2.1 firmware. On Friday, a recently modified javascript file for Google pack, http://pack.google.com/cistrings.js, contains a full description of Google’s long rumored online file storage service, GDrive. Embedded within the file is the following,

// Localized product category of GDrive
_CI_messages.CI_GDRIVE_CATEGORY = ‘Online file backup and storage’;
// Localized short description of GDrive (1st
// of 2 description lines)
_CI_messages.CI_GDRIVE_DESCRIPTION_1 = ‘GDrive provides reliable storage for all of your files, including photos, music and documents’;
// Localized short description of GDrive (2nd
// of 2 description lines)
_CI_messages.CI_GDRIVE_DESCRIPTION_2 = ‘GDrive allows you to access your files from anywhere, anytime, and from any device -  be it from your desktop, web browser or cellular phone’;

The inclusion of the text into a Google Pack file suggests that GDrive may be offered as an application within Google Pack. We are unsure whether this GDrive text is a new addition or a reference that has been there for a while but only recently discovered. Either way, this is as close to a confirmation as we are going to get that Google is indeed moving forward with the concept of GDrive.

    Would be nice if access for GDrive shows up on some mobile platforms as well (Android, cough, Android)

    I met with my friendly neighborhood Google sales guy who demo’ed Gdrive to me. It is apparently being used internally and yes, you can use your android phone to access it. He actually demo’ed it on an iphone. Initial customers of Google Apps Premier will get 10GB per user. File size limits of 50MB are also coming to Google Docs.

    This is old news win the use of gspace via FTP. Maybe this will be a drive you can mount which will be cool. But knowing google they will keep copies of everything you save to it. I’ll stick with a NAS drive for now
