Firefox Mobile coming to HTC Touch Pro as soon as next week

Software

Windows Mobile users have a lot going for them lately but truth be told, most of the good news still falls in the rumor category for the time being. Windows Mobile 6.5 might be introduced at MWC but we don’t know for sure. We also don’t even know if it will be worth the wait. The honeycomb UI looks interesting but videos show it might just be a TouchFLO-like band-aid. The rumored cloud-based suite looks nice but we still have nothing from Microsoft regarding SkyBox, SkyLine or SkyMarket. Now however, we’ve got some good news that you might not have to wait long for. According to an update to the Firefox Mobile wiki, HTC Touch Pro owners could be looking at an initial release as soon as next week. Woo! Internet Explorer is, umm, not so good, and Firefox Mobile is poised to do for Windows Mobile what Firefox did for Windows: Fix web browsing. For all the people out there without a Touch Pro this is still great news as it marks the first time a version of Firefox Mobile will be released in any state for a device other than a Nokia Internet Tablet. We can’t wait.

If it’s coming out for the Touch Pro, then the wizards at XDA will make sure it comes out for everybody with a WinMo device.

Windows mobile is on the come back.
Hopefully Windows mobile 6.5 is a big change.
Firefox mobile and now all we need is the blackberry application suite.

Everyone that can handle it at least. I’m still holding on to my Mogul until the new round of devices this summer but I wonder whether this will run well on it. Either way I still have Opera until then.

Tried it out on my N810 – definitely still an alpha, but it’s got a lot of good potential.

Well the honeycomb is pretty much just for the app launcher, so… why wouldn’t it be anything other than a “band-aid?” You want them to pioneer a new method for pressing buttons to launch programs?

The Zune/sliding panels UI has a similar role for the Today screen as far as we’ve seen. Whether Microsoft works on making the deeper menus more touch-friendly, and optimized the core to make it snappier, will decide if 6.5 is a “band-aid.”

I was talking about Fennec, not 6.5. I have no idea what they are doing with that. They need to bust their asses and get WM7 out. WM used to be one of the best smartphone OSes that brought the closest thing to the desktop experience to the mobile world. They have fallen way behind and it’s only partly about the interface. The interface is not so hot these days but I would deal with interface bandaids all day long if it meant a more updated and more powerful underlying OS that took proper advantage of modern mobile hardware and kept the software choice and customizability that made WM good years ago.

Does anyone have any info on Fennec vs. Skyfire?

  • neodorian

I believe Fennec renders everything locally like a traditional browser whereas Skyfire is essentially sending you an image of something rendered remotely.

It has great potential. Until it supports plugins, though, I’ll stick with Opera mobile on the Touch Pro. I’ll be playing with Fennec in Ubuntu :)

This is good news.. Because the Fuze is not the best phone for web browsing.

  • celz

not the best phone for browsing lol are u serious.. IE mobile is the best at browsing mobile only sites (and with tcpmp youtube u can launch from many video sites and save or play them), opera mobile is an equal to safari(it has one finger gesture zoom and unzoom, and auto text adjust to zoom), skyfire plays any video from any site, and iris is available if u must have a webkit browser (webkit is the opensource engine google and apple chose for their phone browsers).. oh yea opera mini is great in a java virtual machine very fast and simple like ie mobile but renders pages great… with 3g and a vga screen the touch pro aka fuze has a better web experience than ANY phone.. period.

I dont really think firefox will top opera but Ill try it.

  • celz

@ jordan just curious have u used a fuze? and if u have whats not too like?

i tried htc g1 for 2 weeks, iphone is much better..

  • Edward Virtually

    1. this thread is about the _touch pro_, not the g1
    2. apple’s fascist app store means iphone cannot be better, period.
