Apple releases 2.2.1 software for the iPhone and iPod Touch

Software

iPhone and iPod Touch owners rejoice – Apple has just pushed out its latest OS, version 2.2.1. True, we already know this latest build won’t bring push notifications along with it, but it must be packing something new and cool right?

This update contains bug fixes and improvements, including the following:
– Improved general stability of Safari
– Fixed issue where some images saved from Mail do not display correctly in the Camera Roll
– Fixed issue that caused some Apple Lossless (ALAC) audio files to skip during playback [iPod Touch]

Well, umm, that’s cool we guess. We imagine there are a few other items attended to in this new OS build but if you have a jailbroken and/or unlocked iPhone or iPod Touch, this is apparently one OS update you won’t mind holding off on until the Dev Team gives the all clear. The rest of you can get to updating via iTunes and let us know how it goes.

How can you call Safari the best mobile browser? WHAT? It is. I have had Windows Mobile since my iPaq 5455, been through several blackberries, and now have iPhone 3G. There is no other mobile browser that not only renders pages as well as Safari, but also gives a pleasing navigation experience. SURE we have Opera on WinMo, but navigation is still not as intuitive as Safari with its multitouch. And the double tap focus on paragraphs works loads better than any other browser.

Reports are that 2.2.1 breaks the ability for FrostyPlace to enable Emoji
    http://twurl.nl/grzkly
If you unlock Emoji on 2.2 BEFORE upgrading, it still works in 2.2.1. But if you try to do the unlock on 2.2.1, supposedly it doesn’t work.

I’ll be holding off on 2.2.1 until someone finds a new hack without jail breaking.

IMO, Safari on iPhone is the best so far.
iPhone Safari’s ONLY flaw is the inability to support Flash. Give it Flash support and I’d need little else.
Android and Palm WebOS’s versions of webkit appear to be possibly better implementations. We’ll see.

All 2.2.1 is for is to close the injection hole for yellowsn0w. if you are running the soft unlock for iPhone 3g do not update or it will break your unlock

    Still Works

    @RF9,
I’ve tried the browser on my friends G1. It renders pages beautifully, but navigation is more comfortable on the iPhone, and it is jerky when moving around. iPhone safari IMHO is still the best hands down.

Not that I have to have MMS or Copy and Paste, but if it is out there and the masses are just about begging for it – THEN LET US HAVE IT!!

Would it be as simple as a software update and has Apple ever once commented on it?

why do i have to download 246 mb of software good for nothing. nothing different. get the basics right, like the sms fwding or delete 1 call at a time etc. apart fro m these the phones amazing

Everybody knows that the iphone doesn’t have MMS and if you bought the phone and then realized it didn’t have MMS than maybe you should have done your research before buying the device in the first place. Apple is well aware that it is highly requested and you can always leave iphone feedback. It may or may not be available in a future update and there is another option a handy thing called e-mail who would have thought??? Or wait there is another option an app in itunes called Flutter that is $0.99 if you want it that bad!!!! IPHONE USERS DO YOUR RESEARCH IT DOES NOT HAVE MMS AND IT REQUIRES A COMPUTER AT TIMES…..LMAO!

There is no reason to not have MMS or cut and paste. If a BB can have MMS then a IPhone should as well. Its about making everything simple as possible. So give us MMS so I don’t have to imput my email address in my friends phone so that they can send me a stupid picture when they could be just sending an MMS to my phone number.
I am sick of people being snobs about this issue. We knew it didn’t have MMS when we paid for the phone but since its an easy upgrade it should be done.

  • timmydale

    @danielle,

I researched and knew about no mms and I thought I wouldn’t miss it but I do and I don’t see a reason why the ability to email should cancel the need for mms.
Ok enough said I am in team mms and nothing will change my chant for mms.

I have noticed that apps load quicker with this update and the phone seems to respond quicker in general. I only had two Safari crashes since 2.2 so added stability to Safari is welcomed.
Now for all the people bitching about MMS please grow up or go away because its really no big deal and just like it was said before if you bought the Iphone and kept it after knowing MMS doesn’t work then its your fault to begin with. Copy and Past is a big welcome if it ever happen but if it did not I will still own an Iphone because every thing else that i need on a daily basis works with ease and the over all experience with Iphone is very pleasing.
I remember my days before the Iphone dreaming about a device that i can enjoy browsing on with out any hassle. A device that i can use on a daliy basis with out wishing that i brought my laptop with me every single day…the Iphone delivered that
If you think that people who carry the Iphone are Isheeps and that we just like to defened Apple think again because you’re just being a one sided ignorant. did it ever cross your mind that the Iphone gave us a relief for what we are looking for???? if the missing feature are high on your list then just simply don’t buy the iphone and buy something that fits your needs. don’t show up on forms and blogs and bitch about it. be thankful that the Iphone made other phone manufacturers rethink about their designs and OS’s. be thankful that competition still works. SO PLEASE CAN WE POST SOMETHING RELEVANT TO THIS NEW UPDATE. SOMETHING POSITIVE.
    thank you

I realize you can email pictures from the iPhone, but I would guess that the drawback to that is the 15 minute polling time for email. If I email another iPhone user, they may wait 15 minutes for the notification for that. Then they reply with a pic and now it could be another 15 minutes until I know about it.

Sure, you could keep hitting the manual sync button, but I would call that a drawback. This assumes that each of us has our polling set for 15 minutes. Does everyone do that?

You have to admit, there is a valid reason for MMS.

    How true

Before 2.2.1, videos in music list would play on Griffin RoadTrip–very distracting. Now they don’t. A safety upgrade?

I wonder how everyone would like to use their desktop computers without Cut and Paste. As we all are relying more and more on our mobile devices (aka iPhones) to manage our lives away from our desktops it makes NO SENSE to not include this basic O/S feature. After all, isn’t this one of the things that is part of OS 10. When I bought my iPhone I assumed that this basic feature was included and was pretty horrified that it was missing. I actually couldn’t believe it. Can’t wait until they finally wake up and make it work. Coming from the PocketPC Windows Mobile world another thing that is missing is a simple desktop folder where we can drag files and have them synchronized onto our iPhones next time we dock, and while they are on that feature how about allowing us to DELETE files from the corresponding folder on the iPhone while we are out and about without having to come back to the desktop to delete – AND THIS GOES DOUBLE FOR iTUNES SONGS. How stupid that you can’t delete a song from your mobile device without reconnecting it to your desktop!

They understand that if apple added copy/paste, it would have to update all it’s apps that don’t feature highlighting. They’re lazy and will try to milk it until a new iPhone is released and everyone hopes that their contract is up so they can get the new one and do awesome new totally fresh things like cut/copy/paste. And the ex-mayor of Philadelphia waits in line for it (again).

What about txt forwarding? Why can’t we forward txt messages?

I had a cheap katana phone that enabled txt forwarding. I like to sometimes forward txt messages to other people. That’s a simple feature; more easily implementated than copy/paste.

  • david

just go to the app store and look up mms and you can get a free app to send pictures to regular cell phones :]
