Sprint Nextel announced a plan today to reduce internal and external labor costs by $1.2 billion by eliminating 8,000 positions within the company. The layoffs are expected to be completed by March 31st and will effect all levels of the company. Of the 8,000 positions eliminated, 850 are part of the voluntary separation plan announced late last year. In addition to the layoffs, Sprint is also suspending the 401(k) matching program for 2009, extending the 2008 salary freeze through 2009 and suspending its tuition reimbursement program for the duration of 2009. Bad news for Sprint Nextel, even worse news for its employees. Our sympathies go out to those who will be affected by this difficult news.

Wow….some people hate a company for this and others hate a different company for that. Sure, Sprint has churned more and had some bad leadership. It is really better and the guy at the helm is good. Still, hard to say if it will make it in this market. In the end, it may have lost too much ground long before Hesse took over the reigns. So, I admit that it is a pretty bug mess in some places and much improved in others.

BUT, every carrier churns and VZW is up in that department as well if you look at that sort of thing. So enough being a fanboy for whoever. In the end, Sprint is a great data carrier with a decent network and the Pre was a good move, as were the new plans and every other thing done in the past year or so by the current regime-might be too much too late. In the end, the GSM Spectrum we have might just be the shareholders’ last hurrah and DTK/Tmo’s best move or maybe Comcast will swoop in to save the day.

In the end, the PRE will have to be a crazy winner to save Sprint….

I just don’t understand the these fair hikes, it’s incremental and a drop in the bucket but still. I hope Sprint has the catchiest ads Sunday, they probably don’t even have one.

Well sean at this point retail is the avenue that is keeping sprint afloat the last thing they will do is cut any from sales and Distribution…… I work for them too and they have said that there will be little to none in retail.

Them cutting cost thing needs to work out, I can’t imagine what my phone bill would look like w/o Sprint

    Who ya talking to, troll?

Do _all_ sniveling shills post just to fill space or is it just you, Louie?

I notice an ongoing theme throughout any subject related to Sprint/Palm, someone post good feelings or anticipation and it’s followed by either lies, insults, something about another carrier and/or misinformation, usually all of those.

^Your single-sided, willful blindness is duly noted.

That’s an observation based on content/context of post here and on engadgetmobile (no bans for language or behavior) all related to Palm/Sprint. The layoffs are a start to help the bottom line but a better and catchier message highlighting all offered along with thier powerful handsets is needed too

    ^Something you _really_ wanna say?

Respect begets respect. Insult readers’ intelligence and you end up with shit on your face [and then have the ridiculous nerve to cry 'foul']. Fuck you.

Sprint has a great network with phones and plans that do more than most carriers, make this known in ads and they may be able to add subs and employees

^You and your Sprint-soaked panties are a joke without a punchline … but a joke nonetheless, bitchboy.
