AT&T ditches “MEdia Net”, replaces it with “Data” and drops the price

Rumor

media net changes AT&T

Looks like AT&T may be overhauling the data plans for its non-smartphone lineup. AT&T is reportedly ditching the name “MEdia Net” and rebranding all of its data packages with the brilliantly simplistic term “Data”.  Accompanying the name change is a price drop, at least on AT&T’s unlimited messaging and data plan. The current MEdia Max Unlimited plan will become “Messaging and Data Unlimited” and will see a $5 price drop from $35 to $30. Family Talk and Business Talk customers who already have unlimited messaging can add on unlimited data for an additional $10 per month per line. Sounds a bit like Verizon Wireless’ Connect plan, with which AT&T is admittedly trying to compete. It is nice change to see some good old-fashioned competition driving prices down for consumers.

There is a difference to being “skiddish about spending” and being wise about major expansions and investments without a clear plan to recoup the money you put up.
You don’t undergo a major overhaul of the foundation of your business unless there is a need to do so. Unless it gives you a competitive advantage.

Look at how well the WiMax programs and their type have gone. Lots of money, no payoff. The US cell phone consumer base isn’t entrenched enough in high speed data yet to justify the billions it would cost to make any 4G network.

People want a phone that “Just Works.”

Obviously, AT&T has been touting the “Best Coverage, the Most Bars in More places, etc…” when in fact they place dead last in almost every independent study.

All the carriers have problems, but sometimes it gets downright annoying. I live and work in a large city and own a vacation home in a densely populated state. Philadelphia and New Jersey are very large markets – they have a large consumer base. Spending money in these areas to have great coverage and fast speeds obviously will net them a return on their investment.

The problem is, they spend all this money on marketing rather than actually DOING it. I think its money better spent actually building a network and spent less money just touting the independent reviews that show you have the best coverage.

But then again, I am a person who would rather buy something that is better quality over flashy advertising.

It really depends on your area. I am fortunate to live on flat ground with Verizon and Att coverage that is good. But I switched from VZ to att for the phones. Luckily I was able to make the decision based solely on the phone I wanted, with no coverage restraints.

Maybe someday everybody may do the same.

wow nice price drop 5 whole bucks. makes me wanna complain even more about t-mobiles prices.

  • http://1pbr.com Gina

The price drop is for non-pda phones that use the basic data plans. Ther is no price drop for PDAs that require the full data feature.

^Absolutely WRONG, spammer who said: “The “non-pda phones that use the basic data plans”

Those non-pda phones use WAP service at $15/Mo on AT&T. Get your misinformation straight. ;)

Just an FYI. At the 7.2mb sites there is up to 10 T1′s going into the UMTS Cabinet. Very few sites have fiber in them, though the number is increasing. Yet they still install fiber to copper converters to a T1 signal. Sent threw the same end offices then threw the tandem office and then dumped into the sonit ring and maybe even xross connected from one MSN to another and feed back into the sonit ring. This is done when they rehomed the sites and do not want to have the T1′s rehomed. It cost to much money, even though it is just a paper work exhange between divisions. No real money.
I have played with new 7.2 data stream and it rocks. This and when they finaly turn up the 850 side of the UMTS, building penatration will dramaticaly increase for the present 3G/1900 network.
