Motorola confirms rumors of layoffs, 4,000 to be affected in 2009

News

Rumors have been flying lately and the tip emails won’t stop – now Motorola’s plans to undergo a significant workforce reduction have been confirmed by the Chicago Tribune. When all is said and done this year, Motorola will have laid off approximately 4,000 workers across all divisions. The hardest hit area of the company, as we’re sure you could have guessed, will be the mobile phone division. Layoffs in Moto’s mobile arm will total about 3,000 over the course of the year despite continued news of big changes afoot. Motorola is expected to make Android a big focus and the result will hopefully be a fresh new twist to the Motorola smartphones of old. We’ve also seen some promising new design elements in the various Motos heading to Verizon. With an earnings announcement coming on February 3rd and a bleak preliminary outlook of estimate – a net loss of between $0.07 and $0.08 per share – the once dominant handset manufacturer has too much climbing to do and apparently it has no choice but to shed some layers in order to have a prayer. Including Q4 2008, this will bring Moto’s tally up to a staggering 7,000 layoffs.

Is there ever a time where Motorola is NOT laying off people that work for them? They laid off nearly 10,000 in 2007, 2600 in January of last year, another 3000 people in November of last year, and now this?

I’ve never worked for Motorola, but live close enough to the Illinois border to know quite a few people who do – Can’t imagine why the keep staying.

In addition to the 4000 announced, I was part of an unannounced layoff– if MOT lays off less than 500 you will not see any press release. So an extra 500 people a month…
Also some WARN act schenanigans going on.

avoid applying for a job at Motorola– unless you are a CEO

Motorola April 2009 10-Q filing indicates 7600 to be terminated in 2009 and the year’s not half over. Expect more as the numbers worsen. iDEN work is now virtually all in Russia and India. Get all the milk then kill the cow and sell the beef. Or was it get all the golden eggs at once plus a goose dinner? Dead corp walking.

Motorola is basically a turd circling around the bowl. They’re dying. The layoffs in 2009 didn’t help and here we are a year later laying off even more, thinking it will help. All Sanjay Jha has been successful at is dismembering a once profitable company and collecting his bonuses. Those left there are over-worked, often working 16 hr days and weekends, picking up the slack for everyone they cut. I have a friend there who hasn’t had a day off in over a couple months…..no vacation, no weekends – 7 days a week! It’s turned into a real crappy place to work. I’m glad I got layed off last year….there are so many better places to work!
