Cupcake update for T-Mobile G1 may be coming soon

Most of you G1 owners and Android fanatics have been anticipating “Cupcake” for a while by now – and why wouldn’t you? There haven’t been many details, which always stirs up hype, but word is that there will be plenty of fixes and updates to existing features on the G1 and Android, including an on-screen keyboard. Unfortunately, and we hate to do this to you, there is no solid date or time frame for this update, but according to a report from Engadget states that it should happen as soon as Google and T-Mobile can get their collective act in gear. As soon as we catch word of it, we’ll be sure to let you know about the update, which will be issued over-the-air. Breathe deeply, exhale slowly and be patient – it shouldn’t be much longer.

    This worked for me twice = I bought the white g1 and I read on a post somewhere can’t meber it may e u can google the idea but I read that if u put ur phone on the charger and let it charge atleast to 80% and turn it off maybe even take the battery out. Then replace turn phone on and wait a few I can’t remebr how long it was but I’m guessin maybe a hour or two and maybe shorter I wouldn’t think it was any longer and plus I didn’t really have faith in the whole thing to begin with but the little text message thing came up. Now my g1 g1 on the third day I had over heated I’m guessing and it wouldn’t work no more. I exchanged it for another one just this time I went with the bronze. Repeated the same process and worked again well I not 100% sure but it deff is a coincedent/ ironic what ever but give it a try if u don’t have the rc 30 or the other I’m trying with this cup cake one and paying attenetion now lol so we wil cc what’s up any body have a release date the real one or atleast close?

    how do i connect my g1 to my pc because it says something about an i/o device error. can anyone help me on both issues?

    Ben, RC8 is a UK build – RC29 is for the US. Not sure why they named them that way round, but hey! Presumably the cupcake update will be RC9…

    You know something i tried out the T-Mobile g1 and the T-Mobile Iphone 3g and the G1 is more convenient. The g1 with the new update is going to be amazing. When you type on the iphone you mess up so many times. On the G1 with the new update you type on the screen you dislike it then you just go to old fashion keyboard typing and maybe if you download from the market dial text using the old old fashion way. G1 also has more potential and now that you can download movies, music, and tv shows from itunes your set. Plus the video recording that’s in the cupcake update plus java and more…. There’s to much to list and when java comes we its going to be raining apps for free and low priced. ANDRIOD RULZ!

    This is what is wrong with the economy! Lazy ass people. You have a keyboard, but it’s to much trouble to use it. Might as well outsource some foreigner to open it for you. And as far as the applications, 1 out of 20 are OK. It’s like devs are making elementary apps for inmature children, kids, or probably adults to make stupid ass comments about unrelated topics.
    As far as the phone is concerned, it is awesome. But it has been hijacked by ignorance. Come on devs, make some decent apps for this top of the line phone instead of taking 5 minutes to put up a useless app. But this is what you get when you give technology to the masses. They just aren’t ready for it. So I will drudge thru this slop of inadequancies untill something breaks, hopefully not my phone.

    u dont have to slide the keyboard open..u can get chompsms off the market & youll have an onscreen keyboard..

    Heyy… I have a g1, and my battery dies sooo fasttt. But like that cupcke app its gonna be over the air… so that means that their gonna send me a text? Or their just gonna ask if I want to download? But yeahhhh I think I’m going to call tmobile and ask. Because I really want that cupcake thing.. opening and closing my phone kills my battery soooo much! But yeahh…

    Btw…. the cupcake thing seems really coool!
    I can’t wait for it!!!!

    If you have rc8 you are mostlikly in the uk area or bought your phone there

    The update is coming on the 9th of february.
    No word on the full functionality but the ota is due for arrival from the 9th.

    well i have the G1 and its better than that big ugly iphone which to me resembles my Direct-TV remote with all those complicated buttons so stop hating on the G1 cos my old Sprint (Up-Stage) beat the first iphone plus my old (Helio Ocean) beat it as well in terms of brains and im sure the new Magic G2 will do even more damage so all y’all comments on the first and last Android Phones need to shut up and just get one and stop wishing…later

    Ok I have the g1 and I still don’t have the “CupCake” update. Its march 18th and….. nope, nothing. I’m starting to think that, we aren’t getting cupcake. I think its jus a scam to get more ppl to keep there phones cuz they were promised new technology. Don’t get me wrong, I love my g1 and would choose it hands down over the iPhone anyday but if ur gonna tell ppl they getting something, at least give it to em or let em kno wats going on.     Actually there is talk of android being the first phone os to support flash by next fall adobe has been working on it. But remember how long it was until macs even got it? Like 2000 1999 something like that

    Champ sms and steel browser have softtouch keybords but the screen on the HTC dream (aka G1) isn’t that great for that. As for bluetooth headphones those things have poor sound and look douchy. Allow me to load android on any smart phone true open sourse like linix (which android is based) used to be like.
    The battery life does suck and that’s all the proccesser. It could be helped.
    Google maps for android sucks for it only does driving directions and with a gps it should give you turn by turn directions. as well as walking and transist directions like google maps does on other phones thanks g1 for leaving me stranded in the upper upper eastside
