Sling Media announces public SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry public beta!

Software

We bet y’all thought this day would never come, huh? Well, change your pants, people. It’s officially unofficial. Sling has just updated their website, and is in the process of sending out emails to people announcing that the much-awaited SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry software will enter into a public beta on December 30th. A nice late Christmas gift? You betcha’. We’re sworn to secrecy at the moment, but, how do we say this… You. Will. Love. It. The software supports pretty much all current models (ones with 3G and/or Wi-Fi are preferred) like the Bold, Curve 8900, Curve 8320, and Pearl Flip 8220. All in all, it’s awesome that this is finally being released. Boardroom meetings will never be the same…

Definitely wishing they would add support for Verizon models. I’ve got a Curve and have been eagerly anticipating this software for a year now – only to find out that I won’t be able to use it! Very disappointing!

Looks like you need at least the 4.5 OS for the Blackberry. That might explain the lack of VZ love.

Anyone know how to actually become part of the “public” beta ?!? Or is that what we have to wait until Dec 30th for…seems somewhat unclear.

  • gadgetchic

im sure it’s verizon’s doing and not sling’s.

  • Paul

Why would VZW want to allow competition with VCAST? So locked out again I guess.

What the Deuce! They charge USD 29.99 for their Nokia S60 mobile SlingPlayer. Why not free?

DavidB – You missed the point of what I said. We (Sling) *cannot* support the CDMA phones. It is a platform issue that we’re working with RIM to resolve, and have been for a while. It is not within Sling’s power to resolve, there is nothing we can do about it, we’re awaiting a platform update.

cdub – The software will be available 12/30.

IncidentFlux – We charge for the SPM license because it costs money to develop and only a minority of our users use SPM. We felt it was better than bundling all the SPM development costs into the Slingbox pricing. It costs more to develop SPM than the desktop player, and the desktop is used by pretty much every Slingbox owner. For desktop there are really two versions to develop. For SPM we currently have five in release (Palm OS, WM Pro & Std, Symbian S60 & UIQ), BB makes 6, and iPhone will be 7. And developing and testing each of these is a lot of work given the variety of devices and the different CPU and memory issues, screen resolutions, input types, etc. And with all the extra work each release is used by a much smaller number of users.

The SPM license is transferable to new devices, so we don’t think $29.99 is too much to pay as a one-time license to use SPM.

@Megazone…Why are you bothering supporting Palm OS anyway? Like 12 people have Palm devices.

You should be busy focusing on a Linux Slingplayer client….

I can only hope that CDMA berries, while unsupported, will work. I’ve been waiting too long to have this dream shot down.

wow so it wasnt vaporware. Not that I ever doubted you BG ;-) It just took like 3 years

  • clayton

Hey mega I would have to assume that 3g/wifi is really a necessity for this feature right? prob another reason why no support for the storm…..right?

  • DavidB

    @clayton:
All xx3x Blackberry smartphones are 3G. So, no, that’s not a valid why not, and the why not response given makes no sense. .

Clayton – the Storm 9530 on Verizon has 3G. But in generally do we only support phones with 3G or WiFi.

  • Tristan

I know this is a little late of a post, but does anyone know if the Curve 8900 will be supported when it comes out?

  • http://www.gizmolovers.com/ MegaZone

Yes, the Curve 8900 is supported.

  • Gizmocruz

What a bummer that Storm not supported! Back to the store for the Slingbox I purchased yesterday.

  • Jim M

I’ve had my slingbox for 2 years now. Waiting in patient for the Blackberry release that was talked about a year and a half ago. Now, I have a VZW 8330, and have been at 4.5 for almost 6 months now, and I STILL CAN’T USE MY DAMN SLINGBOX ON IT!!!!

WTF, a waste in my eyes. Slingbox made a good product, but don’t tell us that blackberry is going to be supported and then only support 6 models. F’ing REDICULOUS!

  • MikeS

Just got off the phone with Verizon, they purposefully block Slingbox on all data plans to protect VCAST. Been using ATT data plan with Slingbox for 2 years, works beautiful.

    FTW

The nonsupport of CDMA phones is not a Verizon issue. I cannot run Sling mobile on my Sprint 8830 either. Because I thought Sling should work if YouTube works, I’ve had conversations with Sling about this. It is a Blackberry CDMA phone hardware issue for all CDMA models (probably explains why the Storm is not supported, too!). Sling is doing all it can. It’s in Sling’s best interest to have its player run on all Blackberrys and if Blackberry comes up with a resolution I’m sure Sling will implement.

  • joemamma

It is a political thing really. I’ve had the SPM working flawlessly on my VZW 8830 BB. Typical VZW…
