COWON S9 is heading to the US

General

Remember when we teased you all with this sexy new PMP from COWON and how disappointing it was to find out it was hitting Korea with no US release date? Well stop your crying already – COWON has just announced today that it will be releasing this gadget in the US a lot sooner than we all thought. With its very own GUI lovingly shown off by an AMOLED screen, this PMP most definitely a stunner with specs to match. This thing is just jam packed with tons more features than your average PMP:

  • 3.3″ AMOLED touch screen, 16 million colors, 480 x 272 pixels
  • 500MHz dual-core processor
  • DVD-quality MPEG4 and TV output (supports AVI and WMV)
  • Bluetooth 2.0 with stereo headset support
  • G-sensor accelerometer
  • Extended battery (11 hours video and 55 hours audio, not bad!)
  • JetEffect 2.0 audio technology
  • EQ Filter and stereo enhancement including BBE+, Mach3Bass, 3D Surround and MP enhance audio processing

Wondering how much this thing will cost you? For an 8GB model it’s $199.99 and a 16GB will run for $239.99 and it will be available on December 19, not January like we previously thought. We’re not sure if it will be in stores, but we know it will be available through JetMall, Newegg, Amazon, eBay and a few other online retailers. Anyone going to pick one of these up as a stocking stuffer?

    I wish it was a sprint phone…..

    Any word on carriers?

  • http://www.bgr.com Marc Flores

Hey guys, no carriers for this one. It’s a PMP.

  • Agent

I don’t think this is a phone so it won’t have a carrier. It’s like an ipod Touch. I am not an Apple fan and I totally don’t see why anyone would get this over the Touch. The Touch has a 3.5 inch screen and the App Store is cool.

this thing is badass – been waitin for someone to step up the tech game – i’ll try to hold out for the 32 gig.

Finally shiittt! Gotta get this for xmas.

was goung to pick up a touch as an early b-day present to my self. i think i’ll check this out instead. Good stuff!!!!

The Apple Touch doesn’t play whatever video format you throw at it, as far as I know it only plays quicktime. Also, it doesn’t have stereo bluetooth.

I don’t know about most people, but I need both those features in a media player. (My video library is practically all Divx/Xvid and I have bluetooth streaming capabilities in my home and car). However, too bad this pmp isn’t 32GB, that’s the only thing holding it back.

anyone know if it has wi-fi?

This thing blows the Touch out of the water in terms of compatibility and features. Also, you guys should take a look at the UI first before jumping to the conclusion that the Touch is better. The UI on this baby is pretty damn sweet. The AMOLED screen boosts the battery life on this to 55 hour compared to the 36 on the iTouch. Also, Cowon is known for having better sound quality compared to Apple and has gained a respectable reputation over at head-fi.org

I do have to admit though the iTouch has WiFi which comes in handy at times, but personally I’d choose to use my netbook.

Interesting. I am pretty ignorant I guess. I don’t know much about Divx, etc.

Why the hell give it such an impressive screen size 3.3″. Ability to display colors 16 million. And screen technology, AMOLED, if they are just gonna give it a shitty ass resoultion, 480×272? I mean, this is the same resolution as the PSP’s screen and don’t get me wrong it is a beauty, but come on man. My G1 is HGVA 480×360, the iPhone, and iTouch are HVGA as well. And the Touch HD and Touch Pro are VGA.

    What gives???

  • bustafone

    NO browser? NEXT!

  • Joe

    480 x 272 is 16:9 in comparison to the Touch/G1/Phone’s 4:3, 480 x 360. It’s all about the aspect ratio.

  • Gylman

Have to agree with jspeed04 above. This is a ridiculously low resolution. Makes it second rate for video watching, and why would I pay this much for a music player.

    I just don’t get it.

  • will

search youtube for the video of it, im no apple fanboy, but i dont see how this is gonna beat the itouch, except maybe being less expensive

This is the best portable media player, with the best quality screen and codec support, period. Sony sells a higher resolution, 11″ AMOLED display for thousands of dollars, and iRiver sells a PMP with a notably smaller AMOLED screen (and no accelerometer) for more money than the S9. For those to whom WiFi is crucial (personally, I find stereo Bluetooth support more useful in a PMP and WiFi in a phone), then the Archos 5 or Nokia 810 are both better portable Internet devices than the iPod touch. The iPhone 3G is a pretty good combination of iPod and WiFi mobile phone, but if you already have a mobile phone you like, than the Samsung P2/P3 or Cowon S9 both offer better sound and more for music lovers than iPods of any variety. And for the guy who thinks nobody will pay $199-239 for an MP3/MP4 player, ask all the 16GB nano and 16/32GB touch buyers this year why they spent that.

I’d just like to know why it doesn’t support AAC/MP4 audio files… but it supports a menagerie of other video formats and most audio formats (ogg, flac, ape)…??? seems silly

  • Bryan

    @ mike
ogg, flac and ape do not have license fees, so are free to support. aac (apple) and mp4 both require that manufacturers pay fees to support.

basically it didn’t cost Cowon anything to support ogg, flac and ape…. so they did.
