Sony heading to CES with a shiny new iPod Touch competitor

Rumor

Wait just a second here – it looks like something new and interesting might actually be making its way to CES! According to SonyInsider’s “trusted inside sources”, Sony will be unveiling a brand new Walkman portable media player that sounds like it could make a serious impact on the portable player market. Here’s what we’re looking at according to the rumor:

  • Two models: 16 GB and 32 GB
  • 3″ touchscreen OLED display with a 10,000:1 contrast ratio (est)
  • WQVGA resolution
  • Wi-Fi connectivity
  • Onboard music purchase support via Amazon
  • Integrated FM radio
  • S-Master digital amplifier and digital noise canceling solution
  • Web browser
  • Dedicated YouTube interface

Damn! The report goes on a bit to cover some of the unique functionality the new Walkman devices will allegedly possess. One such example is the ability to quickly and easily access music videos on YouTube right from the audio play screen by simply clicking on the artist’s name. If this thing ends up looking anything like the rumor, we’re definitely going to be looking for some additional big moves from Sony in the coming year.

My bad, you had “quiet” right.

  • jazzyl

thanks for the fix @ BoogerEater

  • Bubba

Let’s hope for a high resolution screen. 480 x 800 like the X1 would be sweet.

  • MobileMe

@ BoogerEater – You prefer what exactly? Mhm? Sony hasn’t realesed nothing, and you already prefer their nothing? Are you alright?

So you having been coveting an iPod all this time but your hatred of things Apple prevented and prevents you from owning one?
    You need help.

    Humanity!

when are companies going to become original again? I like most things Apple, but honestly, I’m so sick of seeing one product copied over and over again. What brings sales is originality, which has been lacking for quite some time now

Neat, do Sony devices typically allow you to drag and drop music from your harddrive? I have a first generation iPod touch, and I hate having to go through iTunes for everything, since that’s not how I typically organize my music. It’d be nice to see someone actually try to compete with the iPod touch.

Nicely misrepresentative pics Sony offers with the size of hand compared to 3.0″ diag screen device. Either it’s a giant holding the device … Or …

    @Eps,
My sony MP3 player is basically a usb flash drive/mp3 player combo, and it most definitely has drag and drop. That’s why I bought it over apple; I didn’t want to deal with itunes.

More competition is not a bad thing but like someone said above, I want to see something new and innovative.

I want a tiny mini device that displays a holographic image of youtube videos :)

  • scott

too bad its not a cell phone too

You can drag and drop into iTunes, I use limewire and drag and drop into iTunes, I have tons of music that I have never purchased from iTunes. You just need iTunes to sync your music.

  • konklifer

This looks good. I’ve been a long time iPod user but Amazon’s music store is better. Also, the same file played through WMP sounds better than when played through iTunes. I’m willing to switch to something else.

what do you mean originality.. apple saw the prada saw the wiimote and fused that with an ipod and bam you got an iphone.. but u have to give them credit for the slick ui.. thats not original jus because apple has the best marketing team doesnt mean they didnt steal the idea.. and by the way could u explain a better form factor for a touch screen phone what a circle or triangle lmao.. lg made the first touch screen slim candy bar and there were plenty of touch screen candy bar pdas before that too

I wouldn’t be surprised if this also served as some kind of PSP replacement. It’s already been announced that Sony won’t be debuting a PSP2 system for CES. However, that doesn’t mean that they aren’t working on something with a different name. I just bought a ITouch the other day, and let me tell you, the app store has a massive library of items from games, references, tools, what have you. I am amazed at they’ve been able to do. The best part is most of the apps are unbelievabley reasonable, with most of them costing $.99 or less. If Sony can somehow come up with something like this with this new hardware, and take advantage of all the third party devs out there, this could be huge.

    @ CELZ
“apple saw the prada saw the wiimote and fused that with an ipod and bam you got an iphone…”

Yeah, that’s exactly like it happened…NOT

Give people for credit for real work – just because you can see similarities in other things which are around does not mean that is how it happened. The iPhone / iPod touch were in development LONG before that list of “ideas Apple ripped from” was in existence.

Yeah and Microsoft invented the mouse.

All I know is that they’ll find a way to screw it up. Possibly with yet ANOTHER proprietary item.

    COME TO PAPA!

So they show a drawing of a rectangle and say it’s gonna be way cooler than the Apple iPod… when was the last time Sony made a serious impact on the portable player market? It might be easier to take this more seriously if Sony had some sort of track record for innovation in the portable player market — and not ancient history; I mean in the last decade. Sony has only 2% market share. This device would have to be pretty f’ing spectacular to have any kind serious impact on the market… but, oh dear, all these announced (not demonstrated) features are not particularly new or different from the iPod Touch. Now, maybe if Sony could figure out a way to build a mobile phone in there they might have something that could boost them out of single digit market share.

I would buy something like this if it ran Android. I think thats another thing companies have to do to keep up with devices like the Ipod Touch. Android has apps, a browser, and a media player. Maybe Sony could make a better looking version of Android and sell it with this. Thats what would get me to buy it.

  • Jdslim

    Agrred about android.

I could see this being android based. I know google doesn’t want the android os to be limited just for use in smartphones.

  • leetgnnr

Reading through the feature description, could be Android as the guts, and Sony hardware

  • AlexF

You’d think that Sony would have guessed that MPEG2 (for DVD-rip) playback would gain them some kind of advantage over iPod.
    Alas, same old, same old.
