Convert your G1 to a Developer version in a few short steps

General

G1 Developer version

Already own a G1 and disappointed that the G1 Developer version is now out? Be sad no longer as the bootloader for the G1 Developer version is now in the wild. Supposedly T-Mobile unwittingly provided a G1 Developer version as a warranty replacement to an adept hacker, with a little help from his friends, the proud new owner proceeded to then extract the unlocked bootloader from the phone and provide it to the masses. The instructions to convert your regular G1 to an unlocked developer G1 are amazingly simple. First, you need to have root access to your G1. Once you have downloaded and applied the unlocked bootloader to your phone, you are done. Boot with the power and camera button held down and you should see the skateboarding Androids above instead of the typical tri-color bootloader screen. Give yourself a little pat on the back as your regular G1 is now transformed into a developer G1. Stern warnings that this could brick your G1 always apply when you are flashing your phone so proceed with caution. If any of you out there dare to attempt this, let us know how it works out for you.

Thanks, Neerhaj!

Google HAD to know this woud happen soon. And if TMO didn’t see it coming, fools. Hope TMO didn’t pay anything for their “exclusive”, since thousands of G1′s will now be flocking to ATT.

I doubt that many will leave. The whole point is mobile entertainment, and the 3G will only work on T-Mobile’s 1700 band.

Basically G1 is a boot loader which is helpful while booting the operating System. It’s operation is quite fast.
    It’s also help in optimization.

I don’t see why anyone would “flock” to att. Why would you want second class service?

  • kaiser

    @ thecoolkid
Because its better then 4th class service with trash-mobile.

Exactly. And like aforementioned, the entire feature set of the G1 is pretty much internet-based, so with no 3G support for AT&T, it seems pointless.

Just like if there were unlocked Sidekicks, doesn’t mean there’d be a lot of them being used on AT&T.

Exactly x2. What we have here with DavidB’s comment is a classic example of someone talking out of their ass. Without any sort of knowledge on the subject, the individual attempts to make a smart comment and then epically failing at it.

Do people really think that the typical non-developer G1 user would want an dev G1? If you are not a hard core code writer you won’t see any difference between the dev G1 and the standard G1. It seems like a lot of work just to get an unlocked phone to use with ATT since T-mobile will give any customer the unlock codes as long as they have been a customer for at less 90 days. Now from what I have read about this hack you must have access to root, all new G1′s have the software of rc-30 which removed root access so unless you have a G1 that you have been using for a while and never updated the software this hack won’t work for you. Plus if you have been using the G1 for a while you might aswell contact T-Mobile to get it unlocked if you want to use it with ATT.

The G1 won’t work on ATT’s 3G network so an unlock G1 is very limited with ATT. Now if you planning to use phone with a UK sim card you would be able to get 3G since the G1 supports 2100 network.

It’s not like losing 3G by using it on AT&T makes a difference. T-Mobile hardly has any 3G anyway so it’s essentially the same.

  • DavidB

Thanks Ricky. And who’s talking out of their ass now? Who cares about TMO’s practically nonexistant 3G? ATT’s edge is far better and more pervasive than TMO anyway.

the fact is at&t and tmobile have terrible 3g.. anyone who valued fast data over the whole country wouldnt have a g1 or an iphone

…or i could go to vzw and get crippled phones when the cdma variants finally release and i have to call and complain non stop for them to release my internal gps. For service, i called in to see why my old curve wasnt able to receive email attachments and ended up being called a liar and hung up on a few times. Yes, AT&T is not all that great but in my area it is amazing and thats what counts. iPhones suck ass as well sold my 3G after the big letdown it was. Bold and unlocked storm FTW!

    To DavidB

Then just go a head and find a pre RC-30 release G1 and turn it into a Dev G1 and be happy. I personally don’t see the logic of going through all this work to get a Dev G1 if you are not planning on developing code for the device. You mentioned thousands of G1 will flock to ATT. How can you seriously see this happening? If you ask anyone who has left Tmobile to go to ATT why they left and they will say they left because ATT had better phones or they had 3G while T-mobile didn’t. We know they didn’t go to ATT for cheaper rates or better customer service. Yes there are a few that will say they left because of poor network coverage yet tmobile has been working hard at expanding their coverage in rural areas.

The G1 isn’t an Iphone and ATT isn’t T-mobile. I am not saying one is better then the other. When the Iphone came out it was the phone everyone wanted and tons of people left their carriers to get it. Not everone who wanted the Iphone was willing to leave and go to ATT. People started to jailbroked/unlocked the iphone to be used with t-mobiles network and more importantly so they could get 3rd party aps. There is no need to jailbreak the G1 unless you are a developer as Android is an open OS and is very 3rd party freindly. What would be the benifit of unlocking the G1 only to spend more mony a month with another wireless provider.

ATT coverage is a lot better in areas than t-mobiles especially in the modesto-stockton area in California. with my old shadow, i would lose signal constantly on t-mobile even while in the downtown areas of Sacramento,CA. Not small rural in my opinion and their coverage blew ass for me. I would use the g1 unlocked myself if it didnt have such an ugly design. ill wait until a better android supporting phone to come out since my play with the g1 wasnt pleasant.

why not just convert your iPhone with Android OS. its not like people aren’t already doing that…
