AT&T to cut 4% of workforce

News

In a press release this morning, AT&T announced that it plans to cut 4% of its workforce, amounting to approximately 12,000 jobs, beginning this month. While this news might not come as a surprise – it’s hard to be surprised by layoff announcements these days – it is a move that will impact a tremendous amount of people. The layoffs are slated to begin this month and will continue throughout 2009. AT&T is allocating $600 million as severance for those affected, but that will hardly change the fact that they will be in competition with the hundreds of thousands of others who have been laid off during this global economic crisis. AT&T has stated that while it is reducing manpower in many areas it will continue to add jobs in certain divisions such as wireless, video and broadband. As always, our sympathy and best wishes go out to those affected by this announcement.

    Why have overpaid AT&T employees when you can get Walmart to sell your stuff….

  • Ervel Flick

    Do you even know how much most telecom employees make? It’s a lot less than you think.

  • JakeyBoy

    @Ervel Flick
    anything over minimum wage is too much.

  • MiSoFine

    Great. Now when I call I will get an even LONGER hold time! I hope they aren’t outsourcing! Wait. It will probably be more menu options. I hate menu options, why can’t I just call a number and they pick up? I have to press 18 different menus to get a human.

    @ Ervel Flick: I agree with you. With all the crap they put up with, they don’t get paid enough. I have seen people screaming at them for stuff they have no control over. If your phone call drops in a certain area every time, then don’t use your phone in that area. Duh.

    @JakeyBoy: Customers like you is the reason they need a pay raise.

    Remember now, AT&T does a lot more than just cell phones. Most of the cuts will be felt in the land based telephone side. Wireless and Uverse are making the company money, not the the ancient equipment sitting in the office/home.

    dont know about where your from but i have a friend who works at sprint and makes a lil over 36k a year and thats before any bonuses so at that point hes at 40k its like a repair position but at 24 he winning

  • AT&T

    @JakeyBoy it’s a stressful fucking job man, try to deal with all those assholes (like yourself) all day long, and then decide how much should we get paid.

    I agree with Mr. Neutral…lot’s of ‘divisions’ in AT&T.

    I’m a former Bellsouth Mobility sales employee from way back. Used to be a great job that held some prestige. Ties and dress shirts to work. Huge Christmas parties. Big parties for ‘rollouts’. Good pay and benefits. Things started going downhill..commissions structure changing each year, customers getting more irate and abusive. Really morphed into a retail mentality. I got out in ’99 and tried to get some of my fellow emploees out as well. As of last month-only 2 of my friends were left, and one just got canned(after 15 years of service). I empathize with the employees of the wireless industry and try my best to be very nice to them-because I have been in their shoes…and nowadays, those shoes suck…if you aren’t getting yelled at by some idiot customer-you’re worried that you are going to be pink-slipped, all the while trying to make a living working bad hours selling the proverbial ‘jar of air’. Chin up fellas…get out on your terms, there’s a whole better world out here(but no matter where you go, you will always have to deal with some idiots!)
    Good on ya!

    Thank you Jackal. It is a stressful job especially now with the holidays. And Mr. Neutral is right, it’s only on the land based side of the company. If they offered land based in all 50-states they would make a hell of alot more money. But Verizon and Comcast have a monopoly in Northeast PA and won’t let AT&T into this area. I hate when people think that we get overpaid to have to listen to a customer think that they deserve the world because they have been with us since we were Cell One. I don’t give a shit if you have been here for 30 years. I’m going to treat you the same as I would to someone that is just setting up a new line. So don’t think that you know us or our jobs. I don’t come into your job and hassle you about things that I want from you for discounted and I sure as hell don’t bitch at you when you are not allowed to go outside of policies that your company has in place. So Jakeyboy when you walk one day in our shoes and have to listen to scumbags like you talk about how easy this job is then maybe I will show you some respect. And if you want to go to Wal-Mart and have some dumbass kid help you and tell you that your phone will work in some certain spot and it doesn’t I gurantee you go to an AT&T store or call Customer Service and bitch about the service instead of paying the couple extra dollars. Or how about when your plan is fucked up and you get tones of overages you blame it on AT&T. So before you go on thinking you are the greatest thing who knows all, it’s time someone put you in your fucking place.

    One of the things that always happen during economic slowdowns is that management of large companies see an opportunity to clean house without seeming like the big bad wolf.

    Don’t be surprised if other large companies start announcing large lay-offs. It’s a self full-filling prophecy “the economy is bad so lets fire people, which makes the economy bad so they’ll have to fire more people”. It also allows companies with large unions to attempt to get concessions since a worker would rather lose some benefits, than lose their jobs.

    I’d love to know what the ratio is of those 12,000 to be fired in terms of senior management versus rank and file. Perhaps the CEO and other C level folks should take cuts before laying off the folks that actually work for a living.

  • JakeyBoy

    @MiSoFine & @AT&T:
    at least one of you has the BALLS to use a real user name. I’m actually the best customer you’ve ever had on the phone. I hope they cut all the telemarketing jobs that losers like you have. You are the scum of the earth. When you go to hell, you will get those calls for ETERNITY and they will never stop. Think about that for awhile. Customer service should be a MINIMUM WAGE job. If you have a real skill, then so be it and get paid accordingly. And PS- your job description probably says “and deals with irate customers”…so you were warned…

  • avremele

    Jakey Boy. You’re a stupid FUCK!

  • JakeyBoy

    @avremele
    no i’m not, i’m a customer service employees wet dream. By the way, THE COUNTRY IS IN A RECESSION, what did you expect would happen??? dumbass

  • mark

    Jakey Boy, I agree that the ppl you call on the phone are a bunch of dumb asses and have absolutely no idea what they are talking. And yes they get paid alot less than the reps in the store. But they can hang up the phone on your punk bitch ass, where in store we have to deal with your bad breath, and straight up b.o. And by the way you’re probably wouldn’t even be martha stewarts wet dream when she was locked up

  • JakeyBoy

    @mark,
    i’d be your wet dream, but i’m not a fag. if I worked that job, i’d tell the people they stank. who cares. get fired for telling the truth? everyone is downsizing, just read BGR news about all the companies cutting people. and by the way, thats gay!
