FCC outs Sony’s latest endeavor, a WWAN-enabled netbook?

Rumor

Sony Vaio netbook

Admittedly “letting the pioneers in the market make the mistakes”, Sony has yet to develop a laptop that fits the “netbook” criteria. The times may be a changin’ as a photo of a netbook sized Sony Vaio laptop have appeared on the FCC. The notebook, sporting the model numbers PCG-1P1L and PCG-1P2L, is guesstimated to be about 9.5 x 4.5 inches, placing it directly in between the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 (9.13 x 6.7) and the HP Mini 1000 (10.3 x 6.56). The FCC documents also reveal test results for Bluetooth, 802.11b/g/n WiFi and both EV-DO and HSPA data courtesy of Qualcomm’s Gobi chipset. Lastly, a close look at the FCC label indicates that these notebooks/netbooks will run some flavor of Windows. No specs on the processor or other internal components but the prospect of a future netbook-style Sony Vaio looks promising.

I just bought a HP Mini 1000 and I’m happy with it. I am going to do a couple of upgrades to it but it is perfect for someone who needs a very small yet capable computer for basic computing tasks like browsing the web, word processing, and listening to music while doing those and other things as well. I really like the form factor of the Mini 1000 and I’m a little curious to see what the form factor for Sony’s netbook will be. I have to admit, it is very well spec’d but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be the best. Form factor in a netbook is the most important thing when your talking about mobility and usability.

P.S. I am on my HP Mini 1000 right now at work typing this via my iPhone 3G’s 3G connection using iPhone Modem. I love that app!

You want a cookie because that you have a Touch HD? I’ve seen that iPhone wannabe in person and was NOT impressed… So enjoy your iPhone clone… And I mentioned the Sony netbook if you actually read the comment… So you DID read the comment wrong.

Hm, a total guess based solely off of the shape, but it looks like this machine may not have a trackpad at all… If it does have one in the traditional location, the keyboard is going to be rather small (even smaller than one would expect), or at least it looks that way to me… I’m quite curious to see what this looks like in some position other than leaked FCC shots.
