Twitter = EPIC FAIL in Canada

Opinions

What a sad, sad past few days. Twitter has officially screwed Canadians where it hurts the most: in the Twitter. No more SMS Tweet updates. Should Michael, the lone Canadian staff member at BGR hang himself now or merely trudge forward in what is now a very bleak life? Is he seriously expected to sit at his computer and hit refresh or wait one minute for TwitterBerry to retrieve updates and tell him what his friends are up to? How else is he going to know that BG has put out an APB for his driver who was on a mission to get him a Starbucks Iced Caramel Macchiato and took a bit longer than usual? If the rest of the staff knows this then he should, too. This sort of stuff needs to be known in real time, damn it! Anyway, here’s Twitter’s lame excuse:

Unexpected changes in our billing have forced us into a difficult situation with our Canadian SMS service. We can’t afford to support this service given our current arrangement with our providers (where costs have been doubling for the past several months.) As a result, effective today we are no longer delivering outbound SMS over our Canadian shortcode (21212).

The ability to update Twitter over SMS will still be supported over 21212. But we know that this is only part of the experience and we want to make Twitter work in the way folks want … regardless of where they live.

There is a realistic, scalable SMS solution for Canada (and the rest of the world.) We’re working on that and will post more details on the Twitter blog as we make progress.

Fix this now, Twitter, for you have angered us!

    OMG this is hilarious. Michael and bg this is too much! Plus yeah twitter is lame for cutting off us canadians

    It;s not really Twitter’s fault. It says right there that the current SMS solution costs (probably Rogers, Bell or Telus) have been doubling in cost month over month. We already know that the Canadian cell carriers are complete soul-less dicks.

    Therefore, its their fault.

    Not the first time twitter has cut off outbound SMS for a whole nation. What still works anyway, the USA and … maybe the UK? I don’t know any more.

    This follows on the heals of twitter buying Values of N and the subsequent shutdown of I Want Sandy.

    I understand that you could be upset, though I don’t see how you can be that mad at Twitter. They clearly lay out the problem, perhaps they could have also posted the actual cost increases, though they say the cost has doubled several times over the past few months. That means it could be costing them 800% more to send a text message today as it did a year ago. Twitter is notorious for having no business model and in a poor economy with no incoming cash flow and more and more users demanding a free service, give them a break.

    Twitter’s ability to send SMS updates to Canadian users is reliant on costs being kept in check. Canadian providers are notorious for randomly bumping up costs and jerking customers around.

    Coming soon: Rogers/Fido/Telus/Bell/Solo/Koodo’s Twitter option. $30/month for unlimited updates sent from your Twitter account to your phone!

    Hmmm, yeah, having dealt with Rogers I know what horrible evil rapacious bastards they are. Sadly as a customer it’s even worse than dealing with (illegal wiretapers) AT&T.

    Oh this is some bullshit!!!…As an actor in toronto and a dude with a small fan base, i need twitter to get bigger, damn it! And yes..when my agent tells me to get her a Starbucks Iced Caramel Macchiato and i end up taking a detour to go stare at the new A4 at the audi dealership, and she puts out an APB on where i am when she’s working so hard in securing auditions and Photo shoots for me and i can’t even get her a blasted Iced Caramel Macchiato without it being half melted by the time i get back…..catch my breath…..i needs to know this in real time so me and my fans know what to expect when we all get back to my owners deliberation room aka her office.

    Come on twitter…i need u baby. I need u!!!

  • MaxPayne79

    There is no money in the past Twitter….don’t u know this? U can’t go backwards, u gotta go forwards. Think of that line from that 1974 movie Chinatown when Jack Nicholson asks The late great John Huston..”What else can u buy that u don’t already have?” And John Huston replies….”the future Mr. Gittes. The future”. Ur part of my future twitter. I need u.

    didn’t this happen in the US awhile ago too? its not really twitter’s fault and if most bg people should have smart phones and there are tons of twitter apps. not that big of a deal to me.

    @adam
    right! the statement, “Fix this now, Twitter, for you have angered us!” reeks with stupidity… did the poster not even read what he was blogging about????

    Then i realized it was a satire piece.

    /hates twitter.
    //hates people that complain about free service.
    ///still hates twitter.

  • Who?

    How dumb and bored does one have to be to use twitter?

  • MaxPayne79

    @Who?

    okay Who?..ur ignorance in 2009 is making me vomit and ur arrogance is making me want to reach out and slap u. Let’s educate that out of date brain of urs, shall we?

    Twittering is a way of communicating and more specifically connecting with people, without actually being in person with these people. And by connecting i mean connection on personal level.

    See…just like the internet, Twitter and a million other applications that the net spawned over the years, can be used, customized, and executed in a unique and personable way. Lets take Twitter and illustrate my point.
    Say ur an actor and in the city that u act, u’ve managed over the years to develop a small following of devoted fans. People that go see ur performances or, go to the movies to see ur films, or look out for the commercials that ur in…whatever. Some of them wanna know more about u and what u do because they’re between a certain age group but also because they think ur life is so much grander compared to theirs. What they don’t know is that the grass always looks greener on the other side of the fence…anyway…And others just think ur cool and wanna stay in the loop. So u twitter out messages whenever something of interest is going on or if u happen to feel in particular way or whatever happens to be on ur mind. Point is to make it personal and of interest to ur fans/friends so they feel included in ur day to day life. One of the best ways to garner new fans or friends is by letting them in on things that they could not and would not normally experience. Like…say ur at the toronto international film festival and ur at an after party and u start talking with a celebrity. So u twitter out that ur talking to this celebrity. And ur fans are already jealous of u because uve been twittering them all night long and keeping them up to the minute of ur TIFF journey.

    U then happen to notice an internet terminal and u tell ur celebrity friend to ‘check this out’. So u jump on qik.com and u twitter that ur streaming out live at qik.com. So half of them jump on qik and vous la, we have lift off. The celebrity is impressed, intrigued and amused (by the comments on qik…though not all of them) and ur fans are ubber excited and on top of that, u garner some new ones cause ur streaming an after party with a million celebrities straight, on, qik.com. A company that will revolutionize the PDAs in the next 5 years.

    And that’s one example of how i used it in september during the film festival. Now that’s a fairly extreme example and i know that most people don’t use it that way but that’s how it’s useful for a person in my position. And this is just ONE way to use twitter. There’s a shit load more.

    So when twitter pulls this BS they’re taking a chunk out of my profits because at this point in my career, i need every fan that i got. With twitter cutting me off like this…it’s bad news cause kids will move onto something else and now i gotta spend time and figure out what that is and i don’t get paid for that.

    SO….we a little better on what twitter is? And if u’ve noticed…my voice comes across loud and clear when i type. This is a result of typing text messages since i’ve been 19. I find communicating via text far more effective and far less time consuming then face to face BS or wasting time over the phone listening to the other person breath. With texting and subsequently twittering, u can make people laugh during a shitty day just simply with a comment or, u can make em cry if something tragic occurred in ur life. All depends on how good u are with the printed word and…again, point is…[remote] personal relationships. Today, it’s all about that G. ;-)

    So next time u come on and type shit like “How dumb and bored does one have to be to use twitter?” think about it before u type it cause this sentence made u sound ignorant and arrogant and those are two bad things to have…lol U may not be that way, but thats what u came across as…know what im sayin’ homes.

  • Hmmmm….

    so what who? said applies….? right? Lol!

  • catkeepr

    I must agree with those above about this being clearly the carriers fault.

    SMS prices keep rising although there seems to be no additional benefit. To most carriers SMS is just another cash cow.

    I can remember back in 1999 when I got my first phone through what was then Voicestream (T-Mobile now) there was no charge for SMS since it was an inherent part of the GSM specification.

    Now look at the outrageous charges we are paying for this service. This is enough to Pissoff the pope.

    At the rate the US carriers are going too, it won’t be long before Twitter SMS is cutoff for us as well.

    Better get and bone up on using the third party clients if you want to keep in touch…

  • DavidB

    What a whiny bunch of babies you Twitter fiends are. Get a life, eh? You comlain that it takes a minute to get a free message from a free service???
