Apple allows third-party email app, contradicts its own App Store policies

Services

If this news doesn’t rile up some jilted developers, we don’t know what will. In the past, Apple had been very strict about apps that duplicate functionality of native apps already found on the iPhone. Several developers were denied their applications and then were pretty much told to keep quiet about everything. Now, it seems as though one has slipped underneath Apple’s powerful radar with BdEmailer. The related press release states that BdEmailer is “the first wide email iPhone app that supports client SMTP.” Great. An extra email app is no biggie except for the fact that it duplicates the iPhone’s email client (and the iPod, too). Whether this was a slip up and it ends up getting pulled remains to be seen but maybe Apple is just saying, screw it, let’s just make it happen. If the folks in Cupertino are begin to lighten up, it could be good news for developers who have been having trouble getting their apps approved – just don’t count on it.

Maybe apple has seen the light, maybe they will allow mms aps next or they might just pull it. If they allow it we should all thank the competition with Android for making this happen

Sorry, man, it’s not an e-mail app, just another “meh” Mail shell application.

Nah, didn’t try it. Any company that would misspell “Security” on a Setting page (and throw in a few other boners on their App Description on iTunes, to boot!) warrants a “Run Like Hell” rating from me (what else did they miss…?).

Here’s an idea. Dataviz is coming out with their Documents to Go suite for the iPhone in early 2009. On other platforms, that enables users to download and edit attachments from e-mail. But the iPhone mail app doesn’t provide downloading capability. I bet Dataviz will include their own mail app along with their docs, sheets and presentation apps for this purpose. And if Apple’s going to allow *them* to do it, they probably have to allow everyone else as well.

Amen, Chris. Proofreading: Yeah, it’s important.

    @ Ken:

iPhone mail app DOES allow for attachments. Looking forward to DataZiz app.
