Sonim XP3 unboxing

Sonim XP3

Well look what we have here – Sonim’s latest rugged wonder phone, the XP3. A feature-filled upgrade to the XP1, the XP3 sports the same rugged and durable design that made its predecessor famous. The XP3 is a GSM phone with a 128 x 160 anti-glare and shock resistant screen, Bluetooth, flashlight and a three-year no questions asked guarantee. Those features are just icing on the cake, here are the specs that really matter:

  • IP57 certified waterproof and submersible for 30 minutes at up to 1 meter in water
  • MIL-810F certification for salt, fog, humidity, transport shock and thermal shock
  • Hardened rubber, non-porous exoskeleton
  • Withstands shock-drops up to 2 meters on concrete
  • Impervious to sand, dust, mud and industrial micro-particles
  • Operational range between -20C and +60C
  • Scratch resistant protective screen
  • Keypad buttons tested to 500,000 pushes

Sonim told us to push the phone to its limits and that is definitely what we intend to do. Then we thought to ourselves, who better to come up with some hardcore “torture” tests for our XP3 than the fine readers of BGR? No, we won’t be driving to the Grand Canyon to toss the XP3 in or strapping C4 to it, but give us a shout in the comments and let us know what damage you think we should inflict upon this phone. We will pick a handful of suggestions, capture them on video and include them in our full review.

Looks like a puck, you should play hockey with it. If that isn’t fun, feed it with hummus (beer is not worth giving to a phone). I would also recommend driving over it (used to see this all the time at T-Mobile), drop-kicking it, giving it to a hedge fund manager after telling him you forgot to process his sell order… You could also throw it into a giant fan like the ones you see in the movies. If that doesn’t work, try using a giant laser beam to blow it up, or at least make some scorch marks on it.

I recently purchased a sonim cell phone and not a couple months later the speaker was not working on it. For a phone that is supposed to withstand being roughed up a little it couldn’t take it. I was not pleased that I purchased the phone, paid 400 dollars for it, and then it only lasted for 4 months.

Like Mortimer N. Cobblepop said, drop it in a swimming pool. Dropping it in a glass of liquid does not put a lot of water pressure on it but make that water 5 to 6 feet deep and its a different story. Also try dropping it in a hot cup of coffee and leaving it for a minute or two.

You can also try driving over it with an average car and not neccesarily at high speed. I had an ericsson “sharkfin” that survived being driven over twice (don’t ask how it happened :) so it should be a breeze for the xp3…

Combo of pool + hot liquid = HOT TUB! Sauna would be good too. Wet preferrably.

Great looking phone, lovely keypad, this one unlike all others seams to be designed for mens fingers, but it’s a shame the Americans are getting a better specified model the the rest of the world.
