BlackBerry Storm out now in the UK

News

Finally some good news for our friends from in the land of tea, top hats and posh accents: the BlackBerry Storm is out and available for purchase through retail channels. Free on all contract-based tariffs over £35 a month, the Storm is reportedly flying off the shelves of High Street shops. If you were one of the smart people who pre-ordered a Storm then there’s a good chance yours will arrive in time for you to show it off tonight at the clubs to anyone within sight. If you weren’t one of the people who had the foresight to pre-order the Storm then chalk this up as life lesson. For those of you who’ve been living under a rock for the past few months and don’t know much about the Storm then here’s the quickest synopsis on the net — it’s a 3G BlackBerry that has a 3.25″ touchscreen with SurePress, GPS, 3.2 megapixel camera with auto-focus and you’ll soon see it everywhere, m’kay?

    Have you changed the settings?
    Lots of settings to play around with; every user is unique.

    Of course seeing as I have seen an almost exact copy&paste on multiple sites it’s possible you don’t even own one?

    help do u guys think its cool dat im getting da storm when im only 14 cuz other people say its for buisness users mostly

  • DarrenSW

    1. Yes. I’ve used Apple products since my Mac Classic in 1990. The iPhone is excellent (I don’t care about a phone’s camera since I never use it; I don’t MMS; and I am used to paying unfeasibly large amounts of money for comparatively-underpowered products).
    2. No comparison, IMHO. I hate the Storm. It’s beautifully designed and engineered, but the UI is just awful. And as the ‘U’ in ‘UI’, that’s pretty much the keeper.
    3. In truth, no. The accelerometer is also haphazard (at best), so I may well have a problem unit here. I doubt it, though.

    “Your mileage may vary”, of course.

    no wifi? stupid

    Mickey is such a little bitch…..

    Anon and Derek are correct. The Storm doesn’t have “haptics”. The tags should be changed. That or the author should know what he’s talking about.

    Hey Gareth, if that really is your douchey name, wtf is that all about? Is the milk from mommy’s teat causing you to hallucinate and have nightmares about being attacked by giant Disney personalities?

  • Roy Orbison

    @Genius Boy

    What an ironic name… why don’t you leave the BGR writers alone? Is your poor Xanga blog not getting enough hits? Poor little munchkin. :( Time for your glass of warm milk, little boy. If mommy and daddy knew what you were up to at this hour, it’s paddlin’ time. You wouldn’t want to wake up to find parental controls set on your computer, would you? How could you possibly blog to your handful of readers then?

    no 100+ comment report about how vodaphone kills WIFI, and they are big and bad like verizon who sucks horribly for doing this….yet the article seems to never mention that NONE of the Storms have Wifi….weird, the truth never got out, but all the ignorant posters here were saying that it was ALL verizon’s fault….never once thinking the truth that it was RIM’s choice….crazy I know.

  • http://Pre-Order Tommy

    I seen in a blog that the Vodaphone version does not have an 8 gb card and Version does.

    I got my storm yesturday. What an amazing device. I upgraded from my iphone and it was the best move I did. The touch screen on the storm with the sure touch helped. I have had so many times on my iphone I would click the wrong thing the screen, very frustrating. This was head an shoulders over the other. Also the click settings on responsivness needed to be adjusted, its real quick and less mistakes on the storm.

  • RONIN

    RIM chose no to include WiFi. They claim that would have added bulk to their device and that also WiFi is a battery juice killer. Space became a premium because of the clickable screen hardware requirement. With Verizon extended 3G network, WiFi will not be missed here in the US. It certainly was sorely needed for the iphone. ATT 3G coverage is pretty poor and my friends get very frustrated by it

    @RONIN

    No offense but you’re way off re: no need for WiFi because of the “Verizon extended 3G network.”
    Have you ever used a device with WiFi and compared it with EV-DO Rev. A or Rev. O? I think it’s safe to say that WiFi crushes it much like it crushes 7.2mbps HSDPA.

    I use WiFi on my Bold whenever possible because it’s just so much better than any network.
    The lack of WiFi on the Storm is truly pathetic and will certainly impact sales.

    The ugly truth about WiFi is that it real world conditions you are sharing the bandwidth with a multitude of users and many times the speed is actually very similar–if not worse–than REV A. Note that most people have not been able to test out Rev A versus WiFi, but many people I know agree with my recent experience that Rev A is preferable to WiFi. It should also be noted that signal strength is also a problem as connections are frequently dropped and the number one concern–SECURITY–all add up to REV A beating Wifi, hands down.

    i work 4 vodafone and also own an iphone, ive had a few days 2 play with the storm and can say i will get one!! There is hap feed back and the screen is superb, the only thing im going 2 miss is wifi. But since blackberry’s compress data so well and has a host of other great features its what the 3g iphone should have, ya feel me.

  • pnasty9

    correction there is, no haptic feed back.

  • Paul

    Anyone that has the Storm and has also used an iPhone, how does the browser on the Storm compare with the iPhone?

  • Paul

    Yes, I can see the long long lines forming all over merry ole England! Steve Jobs is about to commit suicide from the competition from the NO WiFi, NO games and NO apps RIM “iPhone copy.”

    Apple will be truly finished when the perfect Storm hits the US. There are lines already forming at Verizon Stores! HAHAHA
