AT&T going belly up in California?

General

AT&T

Word is spreading that AT&T is having some major issues in California right now. Dropped calls a plenty with no ETA on when it might be fixed. According to one of our tipsters, AT&T even tried to buy him off placate him by offering him a $25 credit for his inconvenience. Savvy dude, he negotiated them up to $30. So all you Californians out there, how’s AT&T treating you right now? Same as always or major fail?

I have been wondering about AT&T in California since I’ve been traveling to SF a bit recently on business. My broadband card gets a spotty 3G signal, dropping down to a slow EDGE connection at my client site, and my phone connections vary in quality substantially. Coming from DC and Philadelphia, where coverage is quite good, I’ve been rather surprised and annoyed.

I have used AT&T for years with no problems. Then all of a sudden (since July??) I was getting dropped calls every time I used the phone (an older Nokia). It escalated to the point where additional problems occured, such as my voice dropping out of the conversation in mid-sentance (the other person couldn’t hear me) and very bad static and garbled sound. I assumed it was my old phone going bad, so I went to to the AT&T store and forked out $200 for a Motorola Razar, and bingo, same problem, only worse. I called repeatedly AT&T and talked to tech support who promises that the “degraded towers” would be fixed, but to no avail. I lived in Sunnyale, next to San Jose and am always told that we are surrounded by towers.

After looking at the comments, I am seriously considering switching over to Verizon. The bummer is that I will loose my wonderful plan that was a special deal a few years ago.

Thanks to all of you for your input.

I get terrible reception in Buena Park. I love my iPhone, but it’s to the point where I don’t know what to do.

I don’t know about SoCal, but Las Vegas has some serious Iphone issues with dropped calls and 3G service. I have never experienced or heard of any cell phone service that is this terrible. Nothing like signing a 2 year contract, and having 50% of your calls dropped!

Mission Beach has taken a MAJOR turn for the worse in the last year. I’ve had AT&T in MB for 7 years without many problems (there was one bad 6 mo. stretch about 2yrs ago). Previously, the only place in San Diego where I would ever drop a call was the 805S to 52W junction. Now I get a drop just about every time I make a call from home, and degraded call quality makes conversation barely intelligible.
Everyone I call is on AT&T, so I had been trying to weather this temporary storm like I did the one 2 yrs ago. Enough is enough though, I’m switching to Verizon or getting a phone that does Skype reliably from home.

I’m in Northern CA, I have three phones – one with Nextel, one with Sprint, and oe with ATT. I got to say Nextel has bad service, sprint picks up in some places Nextel does not, but ATT I have services almost everywhere. ATT ha been there for me: When I go back east, I got service. When I go why up in the mountains in CA to fish/hunt I am the only one that has service, people end up asking to us my phone. When I drive to Washington State and allthrough Washington I had signal. Yes once in awhile where will be no signal but you can not expect them to be everywheres. I have been with ATT since before they went to Cingular and then back to ATT. The Nextel service I have had on the other cell I have had for about 5 years and have been disapionted since but it company issued so I cann’t change its services. The Sprint services on My BB has been alot better than Nextel but still does not get all the signal in places my ATT does. If you don’t like a service and the service provider is not assisting you on getting what you need/want then go else where. If your worried about braking contract then log all the times, days, problems down and let them know that is not what you signed up for, then go from there. Just complaining and not having exact information will not help.

    Have a nice day
