T-Mobile G1 POP3/IMAP email? Not so good.

Rumor

Word is out on the T-Mobile forums that POP3/IMAP email on the G1 is a big fail. People are reporting that they experience connection errors 95% of the time they check their email, email is not sending or sending as null, and forget about receiving — not happening. The problem looks to be across the board and is not tied any single email provider. Some people report that resetting the phone will re-establish the email connection for a single time before it fails again. Not surprisingly, Gmail is reported to be working just fine. A T-Mobile representative has responded on the forum and said that “This is being reported” and “will be researched with a high priority.” He also noted that this is not the first time they have seen a similar problem,

“We used to see similar errors and symptoms with the old MyEmail service and the new Consumer Email Client.  Those are found on regular phones, but do encounter issues when there are more than 100 e-mails on the POP server or when there are emails with relatively large attachments.”

He asked any G1 user with email issues for additional information to help T-Mobile troubleshoot this problem. Starting off with glitches in a major feature like email is not good and a lot of hate will be poured upon T-Mobile is they don’t resolve this issue quickly. We know that several BGR readers out there are rocking G1′s, so what’s the deal with your email? Does it work or is it major fail? Chime in and let us know. Ours is as shady as a dark alley in Pakistan…

Thanks, Kyle!

The T-Mo G1 has never worked properly with many IMAP email systems through its native Mail app. None of the deriviative email apps have solved the problems because they are based on the same junk found in the native Mail app.

The Google Android team has demonstrated that they have no interest in fixing any problems other then those directly related to Google.

Hi, I just ran into this post because I was googling to see if I was the only one with these issues but unfortunately it seems it’s pretty common. I do see the pattern that it mostly fails when I have too many e-mails in my inbox, but unfortunately this is when I usually need to see e-mail on my phone because it usually means I am traveling!

T-Mobile/Google Android Team, please fix it!!!

Love my Cliq, hate the email.
I’ve spoken w/T-Mobile, and my cable internet provider ‘Brighthouse.’ Google runs the show; hands down! I was told I receive emails ok, because it’s going through the provider’s path to the T-Mobile network; so T-Mobile accepts it w/out a problem. But, sending, having to go through T-Mobile’s network 1st is the issue. T-Mobile won’t provide a port (I think). My cable provider rep asked me to grab a diff port # which T-Mobile will allow the emails to go out. I asked T-Mobile for a diff port, and they said they don’t provide that. “Use Gmail” I in turn told the rep I’d rather get my emails without having a “middleman.” Their response; “Google is what we use, we don’t offer anything else. Would you like me to assist you in setting up a gmail account.” So we’re basically being forced to use Google if we want our POP3 email. Sucks! I’m pretty sure there will be a 3rd party work around 1 day…hopefully.

The Nexus One (N1) email app works essentially the same as the G1 email app! The N1 does not work any better than the G1. Both the N1 and G1 have the same problems with multiple email systems. The problem is that multiple copies of a sent message appear in the IMAP Sent message folder.

T-Mobile customer service, T-Mobile Forums, and Google Android support provide the same assistance — NONE. The email app has not been fixed since the G1 was first released, does not work with the latest update. The N1 has the same behavior.
