Anyone get multiple G1′s? I know a bunch of the reps got 2 when they only ordered one and weren’t charged for the 2nd phone..just curious if this happenened to anyone else..

I didn’t get a 2nd G1, yet…I’m gonna hope I’m one of those mistakes. Speaking of ordering one and getting two though, I did order one @Home router and receive two. The 2nd arrived about a month later with an apology letter for taking so long…no worries.

Heh, ditto. I live in Sierra Vista, and got a package that was scheduled to be here Tuesday show up in the Phoenix distro center 14 hours later than my G1, and still make it here today. Awesome.

I got mines 2day@like 5PM which made me like 2 hours late 4 work but it was definitely worth it. Of course small issues & takes some slight adjusting but great device from T-Mo.

    To Bryan who said:

“Are you talking about the same phone? You know, the G1… The Phone that can have 8 programs up and running at one time, compared to iPhone’s 1? The phone that can change batteries when they have a problem, unlike the iPhone that has to be sent off(or you can do it yourself and void the warranty)? The phone that is based on an open platform, available to expand and grow as developers think of new ideas, unlike the uber-proprietary iphone…I’m sounding like a broken record. Please let me know if you’d like me to continue. The iPhone just became a device that is “pretty,” but not as powerful or capable any phone running Android. In other words, I expect the iPhone just became the AOL of powerful phones, it does a lot for you but is ultimately the “techy” device your grandmother will use because it’s kind of brainless to do so…at least in it’s current form(s). The iPhone is and has been a groundbreaking device, but look deeper than the skin…it’s being passed.”

You do realize that the G1 isn’t the best thing coming out this year since sliced bread right? You realize you will have a G1 with a very sluggish and unfinished OS which has a very limited amount of programs that will be available. Even next year when the OS matures a bit it will still be lagging behind some other phones. Now I agree the iphone is limited and there are better things out there but if you want an OS which allows developers to be free and has been around forever I say go back to AT&T wait another 2 weeks and get an HTC Touch Pro aka “Fuze” which in fact looks 1000% better than that weird looking G1 and has a real mature OS on it (WM 6.1) WITH 40,000+ PROGRAMS already developed and much better specs than that ugly G1. Woohoo world’s first Android phone, too bad they never get it right the first time and HTC rushed that phone out the door. TMobile even acknowledged that they did want this phone out asap, I’ve never seen such sloppy work from a solid company such as HTC. From the cheap feel of the buttons down the the ugly curved bottom where the 3 hardware buttons are you can tell it was rushed to be “first”.

got mine yesterday! it’s good so far — BUT HUGE ISSUE FOR ME — DOES NOT SYCN WITH OUTLOOK! No CD with the phone to allow it… nothing. Just Google and the sycn of calendar and contacts to google is not easy and intuitive enough… if u udpate on ur pc, you will have to import, etc, etc…

Got mine! I think I’m gonna like it… All I need is a how to guide.

    To Latin,

I never said the G1 was the greatest phone we’ve ever seen, as I stated in an earlier post “The hardware isn’t the perfect design,” but I defended it against the iPhone’s sappy future-owner who thinks the iPhone can run circles around the G1…it’s just not true. The G1 is neither the best nor the worst phone HTC has made, it’s definitely not pretty, but I don’t hate it. It strikes me as more utilitarian than pretentious. I do however like the idea of open-source products competing to keep the market evolving. I’m a PC guy, I like Windows, but I dislike Windows mobile as it currently exists. It’s too clunky for a mobile device as it is not fluid to use and navigate compared to say, a Blackberry. I think of Android more like the Firefox of Mobile OS’s, it seems(so far) like the platform that understands how to operate and quickly adapt to this new and oh-so-quickly changing mega-arena. Let’s not forget that open source platforms retain the ability to quickly change and evolve faster than Windows anything, and this is a new and amazingly fast growing market that has just begun to tap into the possibilities…Firefox started small, but open, and now consistently outranks IE. So have a good time sticking to the MS products for everything, I’m willing to chance that Google has found a very good idea and I think it’s positioned to grow.

    Some examples regarding Firefox:
-InfoWorld Best of Open Source Software Awards, August 2008
-PC Magazine Editors’ Choice, June 2008
    -CNET Editors’ Choice, June 2008
-American Business Awards Most Innovative Company, June 2008
-Linux Journal Readers’ Choice 2008 – Favorite Web Browser, May 2008

You can’t compare Firefox to Android, first of all Android is an OS FireFox is a browser. I agree FireFox is awesome I’ve used FireFox for years and will continue to do so, in fact FireFox mobile just went Alpha and a Linux version is currently available, expect a WM version in a few weeks (already announced). One thing Android has that FireFox doesn’t is an executive CEO (look up Eric Emerson Schmidt) on Apple’s executive payroll. Expect that open source to be more controlled than you think. Also yes I do use WM and have done so for years, I don’t have any complaints maybe it’s because people don’t customize their ROMs very often if thats the case then I can see people complaining it’s bloated but custom ROMs and just about any application you could ever think of is CURRENTLY available for a Windows Mobile OS. I’ve even come across an Android emulator which could run Android on a WM device, honestly I wasn’t impressed it’s new I know but at it’s current state I think it will take years before it even becomes a shadow of what Windows Mobile is now. Thats not to say it will never take off but I need a useful phone now (with all my apps, gadgets, and gizmos working)not in 2-3 years we’ll see what happens in the future but right now theres really no reason for me to even look in Android’s direction. Sorry if my earlier post sounded as a flame just stating my opinion over the “hype”.

Received my G1 today, around 2 pm. Thanked the fella in Brown, put it in the house, and then went back outside to finish up the yard. Hey, 58 degrees on October 21 in Northern Illinois, I could wait 3 more hours to look at it! Finally set it up, and good to go. I like it, it does strike me as utilitarian, but I’m not too into “flash” anyway (when I bought the 22′s for my F truck, I had ‘em sprayed FLAT black…)

I agree that as far as first efforts go, it is far from spectacular in regards to the hardware, but dayum, the screen is mad dope… I like the OS, but will have to make an attempt at living with it for the next week before I make my final decision – my 12 year old is eyeing the phone as we speak, so if I just can’t handle the transition from my 8320 to this, it’ll be all hers….

No worries…I was comparing Android’s approach to a growing market that has yet to be dominated by a single business model, to Mozilla’s approach to its respective market. They both ventured far outside of the norm. The fact that Android gives developers full access to all of the devices resources to implement whatever hair-brain idea they come up with, brilliant or not, inherently lends itself to not only forward thinking, but forward thinking with a vehicle to get there. A simple example – a program can use the camera to scan a barcode, then use the browser to search the internet for prices, then let the device sort the results by web and brick-and-mortar, and finally use the GPS to locate the user relative to the nearest brick-and-mortar locations. The idea is so simple it’s stupid, but brilliant. The number of creative applications already developed and available for Android lead me to believe that it wields a lot of potential, and it hasn’t hit the public. I could be way off base, but I think Google has found a way to tether itself to market-dictated evolution, and evolving is what the mobile market is doing now more than ever. Google is banking on traffic volume and they have demonstrated the ability to achieve this with other products that lead the way in a new direction. While neither the G1 nor Android v1.0 are the end-all be-all, it’s the idea of their approach that impresses me and leaves me excited. I’m unbiased and on board for the time and I hope it’s an exciting adventure. If it doesn’t grow like I expect it will, oh well, but if it does…make some room at the dinner table.

  • Bryan

I didn’t mention that I’ve been using a G1 for about a week and a half now, my defense of it’s potential is based on my hands-on experience, not sight-unseen. Not terribly important, just throwing that out there…

Anyone else have email issues with the G1? My gmail is working great on the phone, but I also added my comcast accts and they are not working. They will recieve one email and that is it. It gives you an option to load more messages, but when you choose that, it says “loading more messages”, but nothing happens and goes back to the “load more messages” option. It does not pull down any of my new emails as the come in and if you try to do a refresh or then I get a connection error. I’ll called Tmobile last night and no one could find a reason for this or a way to help me. I’m about ready to pull my hair out. I can’t understand why its having these issues when its supposed to support POP3 email. Any have any ideas/suggestions??

  • B-Carlos

Got mine last night, camera does not work keeps saying to insert SD card before using. the SD card is in and I even tried a different one.
