BlackBerry Storm headed to Rogers for Christmas?

Rumor

There’s a rumor floating around the interweb that the BlackBerry Storm is headed to Rogers in time to be placed under the Christmas tree of thousands of Canadians. The rumor, based upon a phone call to a Customer Service Rep who said very confidently that there will be a touch screen BlackBerry for sale soon on Canada’s only GSM network, has some major flaws to it.

1) The Storm doesn’t have the 850/1900 MHz bands of HSDPA, something which Rogers insists all new flagship smartphones they carry have.

2) No Wi-Fi is a huge failure, especially because of the lack of 3G. Would you have thought twice about buying the original iPhone if it lacked Wi-Fi? $20 says you would have.

3) A customer service rep… Seriously? Remember the time they told you that you would get a $50 credit mailed out with your next bill as an “I’m sowwy” for an error they made? Bet you’re still waiting on that one.

Just to cover some BGR ass, if this rumor does pan out, it would be a failure of epic proportions for Rogers. It’d be like them releasing the first generation iPhone instead of the iPhone 3G.

    LOL – Rogers wishes

If this is for real. Don’t even bother without 3G. Don’t release it with Edge only.

  • tmobile4life

Yeah, how could they even THINK about releasing this as an edge-only device, especially with the TREMENDOUS success the Bold has had? Let’s rush out yet another glitchy 3g device for the masses and really ruin our reputation!

  • rory

Perhaps I’m missing something, but this is from the RIM spec sheet for the Storm:

    Network Support:
    Quad-Band: 850/900/1800/1900MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE networks

Can’t see Rogers not carrying the GSM version of the Storm…with them having the exclusive rights to the Iphone and Bold, looks like more money in the bank for Ted and Co…though I did have to laugh at the convo with the rep…sounded like she was either making it up or flipping through the script for the right thing to say…

  • CanisMinor

Yea, the CSR these kids are talking about is confusing the Pearl Flip or the Curve 8900 with the Storm. Once the Pearl Flip launch is complete, the only other Rogers Berry to launch this year is planned to be the Curve 8900.

  • bvnvn

get your facts straight. the gsm version does have the bands.
    this site is so anti-blackberry.
I think this the last time I came here.

    @bvnvn

    “That was an over-reaction…”

BLACKBERRY STORM LAUNCH DATE OF NOV.9TH ON VERIZON NETWORK WE JUST GOT THE MEMO EMAILED TO US

  • sammy sosa

this site loses credibility with such a uninformed post

  • sash

Um i was looking at the hands on video for Vodaphone and im somewhat disappointed, i personally felt the phone didnt look to smooth… Everything seems to be somewhat laggy…. so i hope all the mobile services which the storm is being sent to do something about all of these issues….i want something smooth like the i phone… not a choppy touchscreen phone.

Bad form…leaving specific information out of posts…and then posting a “cover our ass” disclaimer..just in case you’re wrong..that basically shows ya were probably better off not posting about it at all as you don’t have that favoured BG “triple checked confirmation”.

    @ bvnbn

How is this site anti-BlackBerry? I am personally a huge BlackBerry user and wouldn’t dream of using anything else as my main device. Hell, I was on a BlackBerry blog before joining BGR. And NO, the release version of the Storm does not have the 850/1900 MHz HSDPA bands.

    @ sammy sosa

Sorry, but this subject was covered on by a lot of major blogs. It needed to be addressed and shot down as the stupid rumour that it is.

  • theOutsider

That proves dick. Douglas from BBCool calls in, gets some CSR on the phone during a random call to customer care and it’s confirmed?

    WTF

Call Sprint, TMO or AT&T, and you have a 50% of getting a dumbass CSR who thinks they are getting it by Christmas too.

  • theOutsider

BTW, here’s the link to an audio clip of the “confirmation”. ::roll::

I think some of you need to learn what sarcasm is. The last line is a good example of it.

  • hipkik

    LOL @ Michael Bettiol

  • carl

i have been into vodafone store today and the woman in there told me she is getting her training next mon/tues on the storm, and that its hoped next friday will be the release date!!

  • mickliq

BGR is really off the mark lately.

Does the Kickstart/8220 have 3G? No. Has it launched on Rogers recently? Yes.

Does the Curve 8900 have 3G? No. Is it launching on Rogers this year? Yes.

Why make dumb comments like they won’t launch it because it has no 3G, when they are consistently launching non-3G blackberries?

  • http://www.k5live.com Likeabite

Stop slaying Michael for doing his job. Every other blog site had this up so BGR needed to cover it as well. Not only that but as the posted link above shows it is coming to Rogers. So if BGR had said nothing and everyone had reported it coming to Rogers then all you idiots would’ve been on here criticizing them for being late with the story. Never satisfied.

  • http://www.bgr.com Michael Bettiol

    @ mickliq

Learn to read, buddy. I said “flagship smartphones”, something that the 8220 and 8900 are not. The Storm IS a flagship smartphone.

  • theoutsider

This reminds me of when some dumbass site decided to post that the 9000 Bold had a front-facing camera. Remember that? Everyone jumped on the bandwagon and claimed it was going to as well and linked to the B.S. story. This is just a typical attempt from a desperate site to drum up some traffic. (BBCool, not BGR…BGR just assisted them in their overall quest).

Of course these types of things are going to pop up, but leave that shit on other sites. We come to this site for credibility, not to support some stupid ass site that posts that up just so they can get ping-backs and more visitors to their site.

And posting a disclaimer and using that as “sarcasm” and to cover your ass is bullshit too.

If you really want to call out those dipshits, you should have labeled the post as:
BBCool Sez Storm On Rogers By X-Mas: We Call Bullshit

So what was accomplished in the end? Absolutely nothing except BBCool getting extra traffic.

    It was my understanding that the Storm 9530T has 800/1900 1XRTT/EVDO R0/RA, quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and HSPA 2100.

    The Storm 9500, on the other hand, has quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and tri-band (800/1900/2100) HSPA. I don’t know about wi-fi.

The Storm is based on the Qualcomm Gobi chipset which, if memory serves, is a quasi-Software Defined Radio chip – the carrier can flash the ROM to make available whatever bands/technoloiges they want – and I think the Gobi supports all commercially available bands of CDMA, GSM, GPRS/EDGE and HSPA.
