iPhone 3G may be coming to a Walmart near you

Exclusive

Back in June we broke the news that Apple would be mixing things up a bit by moving away from its prior iPhone distribution model and getting a couple of nation-wide retailers in on the action. A little more than two months later, Best Buy indeed began carrying the iPhone 3G as we reported. The other retailer we mentioned however, Radio Shack, did not. We’re not sure if the Apple and the Shack hit a wall during negotiations or if we still may see the iPhone 3G pop up there but in the meantime, it looks like another major retailer has swooped down and stolen Radio Shack’s thunder. One of our ninjas has it on good authority that Wal-Mart will begin selling the iPhone 3G next month – on November 15th to be exact. If Wal-Mart is indeed getting the iPhone 3G, the timing makes sense with Black Friday coming just under two weeks later. Bringing the iPhone 3G to Walton’s wonder would definitely help ease the congestion a bit for those heading out to snag an iPhone 3G as a gift. Then again, considering you can’t leave a store without activating the handset first, we doubt the iPhone 3G will sell anywhere near as well as the iPhone did under the previous activation model here in the US. Well, that and the little problem we seem to be having with the economy…

    Walmart has had at&t vendors selling from within there stores for years. This shouldn’t be that big of a leap to just now let the walmart at&t vendors sell just as the at&t stores do. I mean how well trained are any of the sales associates in an at&t store anyway. Walmart won’t be that big of a change.

    This is confirmed. Radio Shack will never sell it because they do not push iPod sales well enough and Jobs thought it would be a waste.

  • Alareth

    If RadioShack had iPods to sell maybe it wouldn’t be an issue.

    Apple limits the quantities we can have and that forces us to sell them as a special order item from a central warehouse.

    I talk to customers daily about iPods and would sell them if I actually had them in my store. The moment they find out they have to wait a few days to get one in thier hands they leave and head to Walmart because they actually have them in the store.

    We have over 5000 outlets and don’t have the ability to stock them in every store. That’s Apple’s doing, not ours.

    Haha, I like how in the comment made by the guy who said he worked for Wal-mart in college, he said “We’re not stupid”, followed up by “Your probably an Apple fan boy…”

    YOUR!

    Call me a snob. I don’t care. I think there is something special about going into the Apple Store and buying your iphone. Iphone useres are a special class of people. I haven’t been inside a Wal-Mart in two years and don’t plan on ever going in one again. Their products are all from overseas and all they do is run the small business owner out of business. This upsets me so much that my iphone maybe the last one I buy.

  • David

    So what if Wal-Mart’s stuff is all from overseas? Where do you think the iPhone is made? Hint… look at the back

  • BAber

    @Debbie

    Amen.

  • skh.pcola

    @Debbie and BAber

    You two people apparently don’t realize that iPhones are also “from overseas.” Does that change your fawning perspective on these gadgets?

    @Debbie

    “Iphone useres are a special class of people.”

    Yeah. “Special.” You can sure say that again. You know another “special class of people?” Retards. Just saying.

    @all of you folks who denigrate Walmart for wanting to make money

    Do you special people actually, truly believe that crApple is some sort of philanthropic organization that exists purely to make other special people feel splendid about blowing wads of cash on telephonic gadgets?

    And further, need I remind you oh-so-very special people that millions of people own stock in Walmart? As the company’s fortunes turn, so do the retirement accounts of your neighbors, moms, and dads. But what’s a little factual knowledge among you special people, eh?

    Pfft.

    What a bunch of snobs! Sorry if it offends you that some people like shopping at Wal Mart so they can save money. You go ahead and pay more and look down your noses at us, but the fact is that Wal Mart provides a lot of people with a lot of stuff (much of it essential) at a really good price. For people who need a good deal, that’s important. If you can afford to spend more, then by all means do it.

    “It’s the Economy Stupid”.

    I love how everyone bashes Wal-Mart and shops at Target when times are good but as soon as the Economy nose-dives they all Flock back to Wal-Mart wimpering trying to save MONEY.

    Don’t try to argue, unno who you are, there’s no reason to be ashamed, you can go cry on your pillow for buying toilet paper and tooth paste at Wal-Mart. No one has to know.

    You’ll probably vote for a certain someone that’s interested in re-distributing America’s wealth since you’re obviously not so keen on the concenpt of Capitalism.

    The key word is “JOB”. Its just a job its not a career. Whats there to know about selling an iphone neway. If someone goes in walmart not knowing anything about the iphone their an idiot. As for The lowest prices, 199.99 is the lowest price. They never said they will beat the lower price by someone else. But come to think about it, They do price match. So umm m that makes it……. The lower price. YAY!!!!

    Walmart doesn’t have AT&T vendors selling in their stores. They may have AT&T reps, but not actual AT&T vender employee selling AT&T services. It’s the Walmart employees selling those services. And who cares if Walmart sells the iPhone. I don’t remember hearing anyone bash on BestBuy for selling it. It’s gonna be the same price whether you go buy it at an AT&T corporate store, an Apple store, BestBuy, or wherever!

    So, is this still going to happen? November 15th is a Saturday just 3 days away? Given the other info. that the G1 would sell at a lower price at Walmart vs. T-Mobile stores, is it possible we will see a price reduction or bundle deal? I would like to see them lower the 8GB to $149 and the 16GB to $249, then pave the way to roll out a 32GB for $349, but all I see now is more opinions that no moves until Jan. or Feb. of next year. We shall soon see.

    More than likely, if WM sells them, they will have you fill out paperwork for voice and data plans and then have trot right on over to the AT&T store in your locale for fixin’s.. ya hear?

    This coming from a lowly redneck who occasionally shops WM for the prices, likes a couple of Apple pieces, despises Apple snobs, and wishes everyone would STFU and try at least for 5 minutes to not blow each other up.

    Or I will poo jihad right here in my pants!

  • Nick

    Well it is Nov 15 and there are no signs of the iphone at walmart. This once again proves that you cannot trust anything you read online.

    “Perspective” . . . you need to take your elitist, sick attitude and stick it in your ear or the orifice of your choice. Comments such as yours are indicative of an individual whose IQ is less than the sum of his/her digits.

    Seriously, Wal Mart is a shit hole and it houses the bottom of the gas tank in society. I don’t go there anymore and haven’t in years. Lousy service, stupid employees, employees that can’t even speak a word of english, and just downright lowlife walking in that joint. Kinda reminds me of back alley offering discounts. It is a redneck Nordstroms actually. Ok, I’m done because I can go on all day.
