Proof of recession: RAZR V3 still the top selling phone in America

General

RAZR V3 still top selling mobile phone in America.

You don’t need a fancy masters degree in economics from Oxford to know that America is in a recession; all you need to do is look at what electronics are selling the best and you’ll have a pretty good snap shot of how much disposable income people have. And while it feels like everyone and their momma has at one time or another ran out to buy the hottest 3G devices they could find, the results are in and RAZR V3 is still the top selling phone in America. Sure, you could try and make yourself feel better by repeating over and over again the the iPhone 3G and BlackBerry Curve are numbers 2 and 3 respectively, but that would just be crazy talk.

haha, I like the new recession scale.

submit it to CNBC for their tech stock watch, bet it’d make it on the air.

I know it’s more for literary and journalistic punch, but I doubt that the RAZR being #1 has much to do with the recession.

It’s more of a sign that Americans are still complacent about cellphones and that the majority could careless about 3G, music players, and cameras. All they care about is getting the nicest looking free phone, in which the RAZR, while it’s a four-year old design, still is pretty decent looking, especially in black or grey.

Jeremiah I have to agree with you somewhat. The Razr is still the best looking flip phone one can get and not all Americans are as tech savvy or care that much like the rest of us on these blogs drooling over the Storm or the S60. I know quite a few people who tried smartphones and just went back to old clamshell or qwerty keyboard phones like the voyager because they did not have the need for all the extra stuff that smartphones provide. I can honestly say over 95% of Americans do not go around editing Word and Excel documents on their phones or downloading new and exciting software on to it. I do also have to say that if it wasn’t for the recession there would be a lot more other phones sold than just the razr

And this, my friends, is why we always get the short end of the stick when it comes to new devices.

HTC: “Touch HD? The US doesn’t want that, they’re still buying Razrs!”

I have both the RAZR V3 and the BlackBerry Curve that I carry with me on a daily basis. The RAZR V3 imo is still a great phone, the battery life is great and the phone is the perfect size.

Not to mention how great it is to have the RAZR on the ATT network and the Curve on the Sprint — So anytime I don’t have service with one or whatever the case my be I always have service with the other.

And the Razr often comes with prepaid packages for those who don’t have the best credit.

The razr is very practical to use and carry around, they also often come with prepaid packages for those who don’t have the best credit.

Or because the Razr is just dirt cheap and does what a phone should do. No gimmicks for the bulk of non-email addicted Americans. 16 year old’s don’t need email.

The greatest part is, we’re not in a recession. We still haven’t had two consecutive quarters of negative GDP, and I don’t think we’ve even had *any* quarters of negative GDP. lol @ misapplied economics terminology and spread of FUD. :P

    @ Ervel

Judging a recession based upon GDP is absurd as GDP can be and is very misleading. In the previous quarter alone the US GDP rose by 3.3%.

Please read this before you pipe up, m’kay.

Agreed with many of the comments … the Razr’s a good phone for making calls, decent at sending texts, and I think the V3 has 3G depending on the carrier, as well as music, internet and whatnot. Additionally, you can get the phone for super cheap (if not free) when you sign a new contract, so that helps boost the ‘sales’ figures.

I believe that the RAZR being #1 in sales is a definite indication of an economy in recession. You can try to church it up all you want by stating that it still has good looks and great functionality and that’s why people are getting it vs other phone options. I say nay! At least 80% of my customers request this phone by name when they’re activating/upgrading their contracts. The reason it’s at the top of their list? F-R-E-E. We’re talking about the V3 here people, not the V3xx which has a 1.3 megapixel and microsd storage capability. This is the original VGA camera ZERO media device that came out with the same silly moto OS that the V551/557 came with. I ask my customers what interests them about this phone and they simply say “it’s free and my budget doesn’t allow me to get the phone i want, which is the tilt/curve/pearl/VU/shine”. Plus there are much better phones out there that can be had at the same price point, or even $30 after MIR. So yes IMO the V3 is a solid indication of a faltering economy.

    Michael,

I think you’re totally off base here, but that’s okay because I know you’re being tongue in cheek.

There is a point here that you have missed which I believe is very relevant. CONSUMER EDUCATION is the reason the Motorola V3 RAZR is still the best selling phone in North America.

Users still see their device as being purely for voice. These are the same users who don’t understand data and don’t see rich mobile web and gps features as being integral to the mobile experience.

This phone is to the mobile industry what Crocs are to the fashion industry.

When this phone dies, it will be indicative of a shift in the market to pure smartphone penetration. Which I find sexy on so many levels. :)

damn Klye…put the phone down guy. u say the keyboard is too sticky and u can’t? I’m not surprised son….

on the real though…RAZR is still a cool lil jump off phone. it does what u need it to do(make calls and snap booty cheeks at the mall, which u can mms 2 all your boys unlike that other damn phone). My peeps can bluetooth me all they banging as ringtones for the free!( new souljaboy? YUUUUUU! new T.I. whateva u liiiiikkkkeee! new Robin Thicke? u got it I got it!) oh and the phone calls are pretty loud and clear. cheap. i’ve got one in the drawer right now as a backup.

  • setusupthebomb

i think its #1 in usa because most folks aren’t like you guys … they just need a simple phone.

why read so much into it?

  • bluehorseshoe

I just dusted off my StarTac.

  • sleepy

This is a survey of a 92 day period during which the number two phone (iPhone) was only available for the last 53 days. So iPhone may actually have been the number one phone after the 3G launch. 17% share over the 92 days corresponds to 30% share over the 53 days.

Well I’d have to agree with you it’s just that I am about to try out a new phone but I don’t think that I would ever not use my razr. If somebody was using like a tracfone. It hardly ever has anything to offer. Anyways what I am trying to say is the razr is awesome, and you need to buy it. ;)

  • PC

Still using my RAZR as main phone, despite got a company Blackberry.

A phone is still a phone to me, and I am not gonna be crazy on facebooking or Twittering or IM with a phone all day long anyway.
