T-Mobile admits to losing confidential data for 17 million customers

Deutsche Telekom admitted Saturday that a security breach in 2006 led to the theft of confidential data belonging to 17 million T-Mobile customers. The stolen data included birth dates, telephone numbers, addresses, and email addresses. Bank details were not part of the theft. According to statements made by T-Mobile, the data continues to circulate but has not been sold:

“According to our information, even though these details have been put up for sale on the black market, there has not been a buyer.”

Yikes! T-Mobile added that current customers should not be concerned as security procedures have been increased since the theft occurred. We sure hope so. The theft is now part of a judicial inquiry with the German Police and T-Mobile working together “for weeks” to protect the customers affected by the theft. Two years later and now you’re trying to contain the damage? Sounds like that is a little too little and little too late for 17 million of T-Mobile’s customers.

    Just think how many times this type of thing happens with many other businesses, even if it’s on a smaller scale. One person’s info lost is one too many.

    Oh this really holds my faith in them now :/ My old cell phone company just got bought out by them and so far we have had nothing but problems and their customer service sucks.

    I think it just the German customers. all that I have read about it has focused on Germany and the German division. No mention of any other countries being involved.

    Germans, by nature, are arrogant people. This is nothing new. Their, what I call, false sense of superiority, continues to thrive.

    They look down on us Americans, and a number of other countries, while, at the same time, buying up American culture, as well as americanizing their whole country.

    The hypocrisy is palpable. Again! And again.

    Jeez, Kelly, all that’s missing is a declaration of how much BGR loves AT&T…. oh wait, there it is, in Crunch’s post, along with some interesting anti-European sentiment.

    This kind of stuff happens all the time. I am NOT saying it’s okay for companies to have such poor security and infrastructure that this would ever happen, but it does, and it has been and is being addressed.

    i would gladly take my carrier tmo being referred to as communist when every other carrier in america are facist dictators. at least in theory communism is for the people while you can say the same the others.

    about the info leak, doesn’t matter who you are and what company . info can get stolen, in fact my uncle received at letter from US MARINES saying there info was stolen from a lap top in a persons home and should be aware of fraud and that was only a year ago when he received the letter but was out of the marines for twelve years. it was a pretty large scale leak.
    as far as the info leaked though I don’t see one mention od social security numbers so pretty much the info leaked was stud you could find in a phone book. I would say its not a good thing it happened but it could have been a lot worse like the marines leaked that had social security numbers mothers maiden names and birthdates

    Germans are cocky by nature…not on like a Hitler level but they do have a very ethnocentric aura about them. Temporary Mobile just sucks and this just serves to prove that.

    Crunch Advice: Take the puke bag from the plane if you plan on getting into a cab for a ride to your air-condition-less hotel. You may need it.

    These data breaches and thefts are due to a lagging business culture. I found some fresh and original thinking from the author of “IT Wars” – http://www.businessforum.com/DScott_02.html – I urge every business person and IT person, management or staff, to get hold of a copy of “I.T. Wars: Managing the Business-Technology Weave in the New Millennium.” It has an excellent chapter on security, and how to scale security for any organization, any budget. It also has a plan template with all considerations. Our CEO has read this book. Our project managers are on their second reading. Our vendors are required to read it (they can borrow our copies if they don’t want to purchase it). Any agencies that wish to partner with us: We ask that they read it. Do yourself a favor and read this book – BEFORE you suffer a breach.
