Motorola ramping up for Android; Nokia and Verizon interested?

Rumor

According to an article at TechCrunch, Motorola is ramping up it efforts in the Android arena by hiring an additional 300 developers to supplement its current staff of 50. That is a huge increase and it appears as if Motorola, one of the original Open Handset Alliance members, is ready to get a little piece of that Android action. The same source also reported seeing some Nokia and Verizon reps at a recent Android developer conference. Neither Verizon or Nokia are part of the OHA, so what are they doing there? Having a change of heart about Android or just getting some competitive advantage? Only time will tell but it looks like things are starting to get interesting in the Android world.

Verizon current is invested with it own open platform called LiMo and Nokia has Symbian software and are working to make that open aswell. I real doubt either one of them are looking into joing the OHA anytime soon. Looks like it leaves poor ATT out of the loop and people say that Verizion locks down any 3rd party aps. Lol

Good. Moto needs something to give them an edge back. And yeah, Verizon is amazing at locking down their phones. Locking out apps on a dumbphone is one thing, but you can’t even install Opera Mini on a Verizon blackberry. What exactly are they afraid of?

Umm I’ve had several verizon blackberry’s with opera mini. Don’t go talking about things when you obviously don’t have first hand experience. The only phones that verizon locks down are the dumbphones.

You don’t know what you’re talking about RockTripod.

There are no limitations on what software can be installed on a Verizon Blackberry. If it’s Java, it will install.

    sonyericsson needs to join OHA
UIQ is basically dead, WM costs too much
they need Android as smartphone platform

I’ve always seen android as being tied more to the manufacturers than the carriers. I can see Moto and maybe Nokia looking at this but VZW would be a surprise.
JDslim, why do you think ATT would be locked out? Its an open OS put on many devices, I don’t think anyone is locked out. And yes, Verizon will nickel and dime you for every thing. They deserve that criticism.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I thought VZW and Alltel chose to go with BREW instead of Java? I’m sure the Opera mini app supports both but that may be where the previous poster got confused. Look for the correct ota/desktop install link, this may help you.

    Verizon dumbphones run BREW.

Blackberries are built on Java, regardless of the carrier.

Verizon wireless will eventually give up on the software control. Honestly, if you are used to Verizon phones I guess you know where everything is on any phone you get.

But, Honestly the UI is abhorred. That and the blogosphere is filled with tech blogs that completely berate them for locking down features. They obviously read a vast majority of the blogs and tech news sites that post about VZW.

Sure, I agree they are Nickle and Diming bastards – but so is AT&T. Not as much as VZW, but they are definitely up there.

Anyway, I read about some “rumors” that Apple wants to build a CDMA iPhone and the article provided quite a large amount of detail into it citing numerous sources. Yeah, it’s not definite.

Personally I wouldn’t leave AT&T for Verizon. From a corporate trust & a monetary standpoint, they are really no different. Reception? Yes they have better reception in some trouble spots – but surprisingly enough my AT&T reception jumped up a lot in the past two weeks. I work in an old brick building and normally had “No Service” inside. Now I have 3 bars on both my Blackberry 8310 (Edge) & my iPhone 3G (3G). So, its not like AT&T is standing still in the reception arena (ESPECIALLY since they got raped from that review last week that ranked them last place in service).

I love those Android characters. They remind me of South Park creatures.
