Sneak Peek of Internet Explorer 6 for Windows Mobile 6

General

The unwired got a hold of some screen shots of the up and coming Internet Explorer 6 for Windows Mobile 6. IE Mobile 6 is a much needed upgrade to the archaic browser that currently ships with WM6. The new browser has the full IE 6 rendering engine under the hood and includes full Flash support. An interesting feature is the browser’s ability to dynamically switch from a mobile version of a page to a desktop version by sending a different user agent. Pretty cool feature for when you come across those pages that just look awful. A quick switch to a different compatibility mode and, voila, your page looks a whole lot better. No firm date has been set for when this baby can be installed on your favorite Windows Mobile device but Microsoft is still targeting it for sometime this year. Hit the jump for the full set of screen shots.

this is exactly what we WM users needed 2 years ago. Too bad I’m jumping ships to Android and never looking back. Full flash support does sound cool tho.

i’ve never been pleased with IE on WM. i’m glad my q9h has opera … much better.

full flash sounds great, the windows part not so much.

What’s with the WM haters? It isn’t *that* bad. I was even running an unofficial WM6.1 ROM on my HTC Apache and it’s not like it was super unstable.

    What about zoom in/out capabilities?

Being able to switch user agents and not just views is pretty amazing. Cause switching views definitely does not cut it anymore–nor did it ever actually.

Flash and Java support for all WM devices would be nice.

    mmmmmmmmmmm…Skyfire…

cubs, what features of Android absent in WM compelled you to jump the ship?

It is fasionable to bash anything MS these days. Sheeps following sheeps really.

I have been using HTC TyTN for the last 2 years and HTC Diamond lately. Both running WM6.1 from XDA forum and no issues like what MS haters would like others to believe.

    MiniMe,

WM has everything i need but the UI needs some serious redesign. Microsoft is not doing itself any favors by delaying wm 7 either. Android looks very promising and let’s face it, it just looks much cooler ;-)

    Tabs?

Let’s see now… I’ve been using Iris, Skyfire, Pixel, and Opera…. each has its’ pluses and minuses… I’m not feeling the need to go back to PIE.

Honestly, I do want to try WM at some point and time. While I can see why some people would have a beef with it, it doesn’t seem all that bad at all.

However, I don’t get all the hoopla about Android. IMO, it does not look all that much cooler–the grey toolbars and such just remind me of Windows 98 or Mac OS 9.

Let me argue that. WM can be customized in a matter of minutes to look like anything. It can have iPhone interface, but iPhone cannot be WM. WM can be made to look like Android, but not vice versa. Out of the box, WM can be improved and improvements coming rather shortly. However, with a couple of add-ons that’s been on the market for years, WM can have the most useful UI on the market, something that iPhone, for example, cannot do.

As you said, Android looks promising, meaning that at some point in the distant future if all stars aligned and developers delivered it may have capabilities present in the current WM devises. That, however, doesn’t make any sense when choosing an Android phone – Android’s future is WM’s past. As WM ahead of it now, it is reasonable to assume that at the moment Android caught up with WM 6 there will be WM 8 with much more advanced features.

It is the “coolest” device of the day, of course. Can’t argue about that – with backing of Google it’s got enough attention to be discussed for a day or two. As of “looks much cooler” – I question it. It looks rather dated, at par with WM phones made by HTC 3-4 years ago. iPhone is a pinnacle of design, HTC Diamond and Touch HD look more modern and better designed. If you need a keyboard, there are 10s of devices, including HTC that have sliding out keyboards.

Jesus, don’t you people ever get sick of windows? God in heaven, Ballmer, windows, zune, it never ends.

I don’t see how people always feel the need to bash on Windows and their products that they’ve never used. Ever since apple started their MAC vs. PC commercials all these bandwagonists feel the need to do the same. Well I have a PC, a Dell laptop, a zune, and a windows mobile phone. I have love all those items and have also used MACS and ipods and iphones.
The idea that anything other than windows is the correct move is beyond me, simply because Apple doesn’t offer anything important when it comes to user friendliness. If you’ve ever used a MAC, unless you’re tech savvy you’ll be glued to ur browser and on google trying to figure out how to do simple tasks such as force quitting a program or right clicking. Yes, the iphone/MAC interface is cool but other than it’s look there is nothing really innovative under the hood. The iphone’s UI is great but when it comes to form and functionality Windows mobile kills it, hands down. Applications wise it dwarfs it by at least 10 to 1, even with the App Store and with IE6 having full flash support how can you condemn it. Obviously it’ll be better than Apple’s webkit based safari browser on the itouch/iphone, especially with the mobile and desktop feature.

Android also looks very promising and I can honestly say it will give WinMo more of a competition than anything in the iphone department. It is an open platform and can be ported to different carriers and manufacturers, whereby the iphone is limited to apple making the device, locking it down worse than Verizon does to their phones (I’m a Verizon customer btw ;) ) and it being stuck on that horrid AT&T network. However, it is pretty early in it’s development and has a long ways to catch up to windows mobile. It is heading in the right direction but right now Windows Mobile is a much safer bet than Android, especially when Win7 comes out
