AT&T’s Pantech Matrix gets viewed and spec’d

Exclusive

Hated the Pantech Duo but loved the form-factor? Well, AT&Tizzle is looking to grab you as a potential customer with the Pantech Matrix. It uses the same dual-slide mechanism as the Duo, but sadly runs Pantech’s run-of-the-mill OS. There are at least some decent features here. Things like dual-band UMTS/HSDPA, a 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, Video Share, a QWERTY keyboard and numeric keypad. You even get to choose your own color; red, blue, or black. That seals the deal for us. We’ll be first in line. If you’re ferocious enough, hit the jump for the full product sheet!

Meggan — Thank God someone else is having the same problem! I thought it was me. Now I’m totally paranoid while I’m typing a long message just waiting for this stupid fluke to occur. I’m on my 3rd Matrix — same problem on all 3 (1st time was color change to black, 2nd time I cracked the screen)

Also, another problem, the screen sometimes switches back and forth from portrait to landscape while I’m in landscape (qwerty board). I actually shut it down at one point in the hopes of resetting it, but that didn’t help. AT&T store rep (who also looked at me like I was nuts) told me to call and report it so they can tally up the quirks. If we don’t tell them, they won’t know.

My dad always said not to buy a car in its first year — that’s when they find out the bugs which don’t get worked out until the 2nd year. That may be the case here.

I got this phone its great but really hard to understand. It is more durable than the pantech duo. I expirenced the P.D cracking in half. The matrix is perfect for a 12 year old that is clumsy!! Like me

hey i forgot how to change my message tone but what u said worked thank u!!!!

  • lauren

yes, it happens all the time. have you found a solution?

    I have a matrix.

The battery life is terrible. It’s funny because when the ATT guy asked me what I was looking for, the first thing I said was “a phone with a decent battery life.” :/

So, I was talking on my phone tonight when in midsentence my friend couldn’t hear me talking to her. Now nobody can hear me, but I can hear them.

The sound quality of the phone was bad too, I could always hear myself echoing when I talked. It’s like there was a huge delay when I spoke.

I’m taking my phone to an ATT store tomorrow, and I hope I can get a different phone. This one is just awful.

So I bought the Matrix a few months ago after waiting a year to get the upgrade. And at first I loved it. The keyboard was easy to use, it was small and lightweight, and it wasn’t as mainstream among my friends. (Sometimes it’s nice to be different =])
But then, like so many people who have this phone, I slide open the qwerty keyboard and it unhinged on one side. AT&T was really nice and offered to replace it for me, since it’s a known problem…but I don’t want to have to do this every few months. Does anyone know if Pantech has addressed and corrected this problem?

Wow, you guys are gay, GO PANTECH! fuck smartfones.

  • meggie

my phone shuts down in a middle of the txt message too. do any of u guys kno if at&t addressed this problem?

  • Claudette

I called AT&T about the midstream text message drop. What a pain in the a** that was. Customer service transferred me to tech support, I spoke with them, then tech transfered me back to customer service to speak with them again! They switcheD me back and forth, put me on hold, then perma-hold. I finally told them I was at work, just trying to do the right thing, gotta go. It seemed like a big waste of my time. I don’t think they want to hear it.

Maybe if enough people call in they will take it seriously. PLEASE CALL IT IN!

  • Kailee

Oh my gosh, I was wondering the same question..
    For like, 3 months now.
    & I couldn’t figure it out.
    Thank you so muchhh!

just got my matrix yesterday. so far i love it. i’ve had a blackjack and a walkman 580i and i like this the most. i have heard alot about problems with the back of the keyboard coming off and the screen not switching from portrait to landscape. read somewhere that it was limited to a batch of them made last year so i’m really hoping they’ve fixed that. basically this phone has everything i need. i like the way everything is organized. i love that it has gps. and for those of u trying to figure out how to put a ringtone for each certain person i know how. the contact has to be saved on the phone- not the sim card. so go to the contact and move or copy it to ur phone. that allows u to put each contact their own ringtone and pic. so far i would recommend this phone. not just to teens either. i’m 22 and it’s great for me cuz i’m a textaholic. i have it in red. the numbers on the number pad are pink so it’s very girly. i only have 2 complaints. for one, it doesn’t support full themes like my w580i. i loved themes cuz it changed the menus and everything. and for two, the camera is only 1.3 megapixels which is not great at all when it’s uploaded to a computer- very pixelated. but those are small problems that really aren’t important. overall i give it a 9 out of 10.

Regardless of what AT&T says, Pantech says this phone is not capable of synching with a PC, for addresses, datebook. Only synchs for music. I’m off to buy a &^%$ datebook now.

GOOD BYE PANTECH MATRIX!!!! I had it for 6 or 7 months and could no longer tolerate the following problems:

    – phone rebooting in the middle of texting and having to start the same message all over again. It’s sporadic, but when it does do this shutting down thing, it happens 3 or 4 times in a row. What a pain!!!!!!!

    – phone sometimes not switching from landscape to portrait — on several attempts. G*d help you if you’re in a rush to send a text before you go into a tunnel or something.

    – the labels for telephone numbers are fixed (mobile, business, fax, other). Nor can you set one of the numbers as a default #, you always have to choose which one to call.

    – you can’t sync it with a computer.

    – the battery life sucks

    – the final straw: 2 weeks ago it suddenly dropped phone numbers from the address book starting with “S” all the way to the end (“V”). I went to call my friend (S—) and it was like, What the —?! I had to call tech support, they had me shut it down, remove the battery and do some other things. Geeesus!

    I’m done.

I’m not a techie smartphone kinda person, I’m a middle-aged Mom, but I found this phone to be juvenile and unreliable. Just got the Nokia E71x. I’ve always been a Nokia person, and I’m glad to be back. I’ve finally stepped up to a smartphone instead of a smart dumb phone.

BTW, by the time I finished telling AT&T how beat up I felt (on the phone 1 & 1/2 hours with them!!) and ready to defect, I got the Nokia E71x for FREE!!!!!!

Oh, and they replaced my Pantech with a refurbished Pantech. Gee, thanks. Anybody want a Pantech?!

  • DWIL2010

    thanks so much it worked

  • Claudette

To DWIL2010: Great! Glad it worked. But what worked? Did you get the Nokia E71x? For free? Are you also done with the Pantech Matrix?

I absolutely love the Nokia E71x! So glad to be back to Nokia-land. Pantech dual keyboard phone is cute and novel, but Nokia is so much more technically advanced. No contest.

Nokia also has a slide out QWERTY keyboard in their new N75, but AT&T doesn’t carry it.

  • Annonymous

i’ve gone through 2 matrix’s so far and it hasn’t been a month. i have the blue one i was wondering if anyone phone would restart on them? This is my second phone and it’s doing the same exact thing as my first phone.

  • Claudette

Pls read my posts for December 29 and June 9th. You’re not the only one having this problem. And don’t bother calling AT&T, they’ll just send you another refurb. My advice: Just get rid of it. Stop torturing yourself.

After hours on the phone with AT&T with Pantech Matrix complaints, and threatening to terminate service, they were willing to give me the new Nokia E71x FREE! Times are tough, competition is tough — they’ll do anything to keep your account. If you don’t mind paying the extra $30/month for smart phone service, this is a really nice phone. I love it.

  • Istok

Claudette is right. If you can get another phone from them fine, do it. If not you can get a lot of new, unlocked text and smartphones from Ebay for like 150-200 and you do not have to get the AT&T data plan. Actually I think only the iphone requires a data plan. No sure though.
But for the hassle and the amount of money you spend monthly (what, at least 40-70$) for service an additional investment is not that big a deal.
Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet. It happens to all of us from time to time especially with technology.

  • Nick

I’ve had mine for about 8 months now. It is actually pretty useful, although the OS does suck. The internet is decently displayed, the music player works well if you have bluetooth headphones (it doesn’t have a standard headphone jack, and the apps on it work well.

The problem I had with it was the lack of customisation. Any wallpapers you put on don’t rotate like the stock ones do(even though the’re the same size and format). The apps all cost extra. There are some trial versions, but if you want more than a calculator and a media player you have to subscribe.

  • http://myspace.com/noize-and-kisses Megan

My first Matrix did that alot. I got a new one sent in the mail and it doesn’t do it nearly as much.

  • http://myspace.com/noize-and-kisses Megan

Another problem I’ve had with this phone is the memory card load time. I had the Samsung A737 [piece of crap phone. All the buttons came off and the back had to be duct taped on] with a 2g memory card in it. And on there, my pictures on the card loaded up very quickly. And on the Matrix, they take forever to load. The ones on the phone itself don’t take anytime at all to load, but there’s no way I’m going to be able to fit all 7,000 of my pictures on that phone without a card.

  • Suelee

where can i buy a phone like this please help me ASAP

  • bruno

i have been using the pantech matrix for about 15 months – on my second one because i dropped one 4 whole feet and the top two pieces stopped talking to the bottom-most piece so i could make and receive calls using the number pad but no qwerty and no screen – at&t of course refused to talk about it at all so being in a hurry i bought same phone again.
both of these displayed all the terrible characteristics you all mention, the shutting down etc.
i went with this phone because i was offered unlimited internet for 20/month and then got gps for 10/month which also got me unlimited internet for 10/month – basically i get unlimited gps and internet for 20/month or half what it cost with the iPone at the time
i do about everything i would be doing with the iPone on the Matrix which in no way means it is equally as capable, i just put up with its cheap crap functionality because i save 240/year on my bill – most recently i can not find an e-reader for this p.o.s.
trading for something better in 9 months when my contract is up again – but of course at&t will always win and us consumers will always lose, just understand the corporation has the power and you are fu(ked – this should be true in other dealings you have with corporations today so you should not really be surprised… sadly… only if we all stop using these will corporations have to change, but we can’t so it continues
    best wishes and good luck!
