RIM’s earnings miss Street’s estimate, tanks after hours

Exclusive

It looks like RIM is one of the first to announce not-so-great news about its second quarter performance, but will it be a continuing trend in the mobile industry in general? We discussed this before and all you readers chimed in, but no one expected it to come so soon. Research In Motion (RIMM) has missed its forecasted earnings by $20 million and Earnings Per Share by a penny. It’s currently down over 20% in after hours trading at the time of this post. With the delay of launching the Bold in the U.S., the Pearl 8220 somewhere on the horizon, and the Storm arriving before Thanksgiving, will it be possible to gain a little boost in the number of net subscribers?

What rim needs to do is give the enduser to by directly form them. weh have seen were relying on the carriers has gotten them

Big surprise here. Whether its the carriers or RIM either way with RIM’s new great products in continual delay I am not shocked. When their new products ever make it to U.S. carriers things should turn around.

  • Aaron

Yeah, RIM themselves aren’t going anywhere. But they have yet to have a good solid roll out of a new phone yet this half(or entire) of the year.

  • aquibs

If anyone cares to look, RIM fell within their estimates.

  • alaysias

i hope this doesn’t affect the overall quality of the storm and its release date.

not so good news? sure they missed analysts targets but lets look at the numbers here:

    6.1 million devices shipped

    2.6 million new subscribers

revenue at $2.58 billion up 15% from the previous quarter and up 88% from the same quarter last year.

Net income at $495.5 million up from $484.5 million in the previous quarter and $287.7 million in the same quarter last year.

All this while dealing with the fact that devices have been delayed and several new devices are still on the way.

The only people who take these kind of numbers as “not so good news” are the greedy bastards on the TSX and NYSE.

Wait a second, look at the numbers and not expectations. They grew earnings 72% over last year’s quarter? They grew revenues up 63%?

The reaction in the stock is ludicrous BUT it will provide a great opportunity for long term investors. The company has explicitly stated that they expect earnings growth to slow down in this and next quarter while they INVEST, INVEST, INVEST for the next leg of growth. Seriously, the company increased R&D by $50 million this quarter or about 40%. This is an excellent indicator of the future. You have to invest to grow.

They are about launch no less than 4 new models and they are investing ahead of this. Forget about BULLSHIT analysts guesses and look at the actual numbers and you will see a company you want to associate your capital with.

But please don’t buy too much as I need to buy many shares tomorrow…

  • NickyHilton

So BG, how is the October 2nd launch looking for the Bold? Any info?

  • mangenius

Great time to BUY.. 20% drop expect a great bounce back soon by this powerhouse

  • Tyrone D.

It’s their damn fault for not releasing the devices sooner. I don’t feel bad for them at all, except I will buy more of their shares! :0)~

it was the poor outlook for Q3 is the reason its down so much. People were looking for $1.09ish and they said .87-.97 Maybe they are just being conservative on there estimates because of they economy. AAPL, under promises and goes way over every Q.

  • MarxAnth

Yeah and AAPL also gets punished when it doesnt meet the streets estimates.. But I think this is a great buying opp, don’t know if I’d buy tomorrow.. I’d want to wait till the bailout deal is done..

I think it’s GREAT that RIM releases all 4 phones at the same time (Kickstart, Javelin, Storm, and the Bold).

At least it gives a person to choose which phone they want, instaed of upgrading every 6 months.

My only change would be to release new phones at the begining of summer (Memorial Day), so that you have the whole summer to play with your phone.

i just saw the minute with mike video on the storm and while it doesn’t show you too much, you can basically see that this thing is going to be really good.
wifi isn’t needed on the vz network anyway. and i think I remember another post somewhere that wifi is a huge battery drain on the iphone?
i will hold off on judging the input until i test it myself. if it’s true that you can turn ‘click’ on and off then that would eliminate that objection anyway. i love my mbpro and tiger os but give me a break – att’s network is a joke (in sf) and you have to send the phone in to replace the battery? ridiculous. only time will tell, but i believe the storm is going to be really huge. people will bail on the other carriers for this. android is neat, whatever. email and browsing are still the killer apps. and if the storm browser is close to safari then this thing will kill.

Why would I feel bad for RIM, they allowed ATT to destroy them and the stock price. The Bold was launched in Chile months ago, Canada got it weeks ago, and where doesthe biggest market, the US, stand being held hostage by ATT in an effort to peddle Iphones before the exclusive contract runs out. This is not about the kickstart, their is a similar phone to satisfy that market. The storm is not as anticipated because CDMA using have high speed black berry. This is mostly about the Bold. GSM users want a 3g phone. Serious if chile can release it then the US should be able to. have anyone heard any complaints about the “issues” ATT is holding it for from Chile or Rogers users? I haven’t. If ATT doesn’t want it let Tmobile have it. They would have sold thousands if not millions of units. Now in an effort to stroke ATT they have lost millions in sales. Tmobie has found a device and if it goes how it looks it will cannibalize RIM’s market more. Good job RIm way to destroy yourself. Note to RIM you are not the only smartphone provider in the market anymore act accordingly.
