RIM gets official with T-Mobile BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220, say that five times fast

General

The title sort of says it all, but RIM has just gone ahead and announced the BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220 (Kickstart FTW!). T-Mobile will be the exclusive carrier of the device this year when it is launched in the US and it will come in black or red. We were not given pricing or an exact release date, but we’re assuming those sorts of things will all be made clearer when Mr. Jim rocks the mic at CTIA. Shout out to Freeway, Young Chris, Neef, Rellz, Bleek, Omillio, Beans, Peedi, Sparks, Oschino. Couple more shots along with press release after the jump!

Packed with an abundance of powerful features, it weighs only 3.6 ounces and measures approximately 3.9″ x 1.9″ x 0.7″. Featuring two high-resolution, light-sensing color displays, the external LCD makes it easy to preview incoming emails, text messages and phone calls without opening the handset, while the large, 240 x 320 internal LCD displays messages, videos and web pages with impressive detail and contrast.

“The popularity of BlackBerry smartphones has grown tremendously around the world and the introduction of this exciting new flip phone will help extend the reach of the BlackBerry platform even further,” said Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO, Research In Motion. “The BlackBerry Pearl Flip is a full-featured smartphone with a unique and friendly design and it is a natural choice for flip phone users who want to start doing more with their phone than just talk.”

Videos play smoothly on the large internal display, playlists can be managed directly on the handset and there’s an equalizer with 11 preset filters – including “Lounge”, “Jazz” and “Hip Hop” – for customizing audio ranges when using headphones or external speakers. No 3G?

  • Lil’ B

  • http://www.bgr.com The Boy Genius

    Fine, updated!

  • gquaglia

The more I see this thing, the more it reminds me, more then any other flip phone, of the original Star Trek Communicator.

  • Perspective

Too bad this isn’t an MS product. . . the tagline could be “Welcome to the timewarp.”

  • rick

wow you really did your thing with the blackberry stuff today BG, that’s why this is my homepage no one can beat you!

  • Ken

It would have to be 3G for AT&T to launch it…

  • Matt

Looks very similar to SE Z750 flip phone we sell at AT&T

  • Jdslim

Great update, I hope you’ll be having CTIA coverage tommorow should be a huge day for T-mobile.

  • Truman

Are we STILL pretending that threaded messaging isn’t important?? WHAT is the hold up? SOMEONE, TALK about this.

  • Jeremiah

Truman, what are you talking about? Threaded messaging has been a core part of the Blackberry experience since forever.

UGH I’m so mad about the name. How original to just add “Flip” to Pearl. I realize that it is pretty much just the clamshell version of the Pearl, but still. Kickstart was an awesome, if temporary, name.

Still, I am highly considering this phone because I FINALLY want to have a flip-phone.

  • Nate

Man, that keyboard looks tough. The keys look large, but too flush.

Regardless, they’re going to sell a shit-ton of these things.

  • Jackson

Is it me or does it say 3g on the screen?

  • Justin

No, it says “3 emails”… top right says “Edge”

  • John

Nope, the phone has 3 messages, look under the bars, there is a big EDGE.

  • Jeff Johnson

    Will this thing have GPS?

I like the idea of a flip phone to protect the screen, but no 3G sucks.

BG – I just read this in a MarketWatch news article about RIM, here is an excerpt from that article. Way to go BG!

….The most prominent among these is a touch-screen device reportedly named the BlackBerry Storm. The gadget blog Boy Genius Report — which has landed other big BlackBerry scoops in the past — reported last week that the Storm [once called the Thunder] is being evaluated by Verizon (VZ, Trade ) in the U.S. This suggests a possible November launch for the device, the report read. Read story on Boy Genius Report.

I do appreciate the insight to the new RIM products here on BGR but I wonder who is the market? I can’t see what the advantages of the new units are over my 8830. Where I travel VZW is the only decent carrier, and VZW crippled the 8830 built-in GPS (to market Navigator). The biggest sin is that RIM/VZW still refuse to supply a fully capable Mac OS Desktop Suite to sync the unit; the cobbled-together third-party software — don’t even remember the name at the moment — is poor at best.

  • Sally

    @ Baudwalk:

The market is the consumer segment. There are millions of consumers within T-Mobile’s network reach that would love a BlackBerry without the corporate stigma attached to it.

My sister is a long time Verizon user who swears by LG. For the first time ever, she actually wants a BlackBerry thanks to the Pearl Flip and is considering switching carriers just for this device. I told her she could get her Hotmail and Gmail plus all her IM’s in one single inbox almost instantly in a form factor she loved and she was sold.

  • NickyHilton

I think it looks really cute. I can’t wait till it comes out on T-Mobile! I’m actually without a Blackberry right now due to waiting for the new models with the 4.6 OS to come out…I seriously cannot wait! I’m looking forward to the Bold as well, but AT&T has been pretty sketchy with their 3G network and their plans are really expensive. I guess I’m a T-Mobile girl at heart…lol. But, the Bold looks soooo tempting though that I may have to make the switch! Oh by the way BG, I’ve been reading your site since the very beginning…can I be your Girl Genius? kidding…keep up the good work…you’re hot!

Great News, i know my girlfriend is awaiting this handset and im just pumped to see the pearl heading in a new direction…
    :)
Awesome Job BG, were all truly in your debt.

  • Dissappointed BB Tmob customer

Boy another poor excuse for T-mobile to carry a phone that most don’t want. A hybrid phone. We want the BOLD or something superior over the curve and its memory leakage issues. If we wanted a touch screen most would get an iPhone or equivalent but we stay with bb for the keypad. If Tmob has the largest customer base (per DC bb business sale reps), why can they not get the best bb phones first? Why would one go from the pearl to the flip? For a smaller footprint? Looks like a Samsung to me.

  • NickyHilton

I agree! I wish they would release the Blackberry Bold on T-Mobile before the Blackberry Pearl Flip…oh well…I do hope that T-Mobile will eventually release the Bold in the near future.
