New Zunes get outed with pictures and videos for all

General

After information on the new Zunes was leaked this past week, Microsoft decided to play its hand before Apple and officially release the details on the upcoming new Zunes. Hardware changes are somewhat ho-hum but software changes are something just short of fantastic (for a Zune at least). Let’s start with the hardware. As we previously mentioned, the new Zunes will get some additional storage space with capacities being boosted to 120GB for the hard drive model and 16Gb for the flash model. The 120GB will take the place of the current 80GB model and will keep the same price point of $249. The 16GB model will come in at $199 and both new models will sport a glossy black finish. Lets not forget about the current 8GB model. It will see some flashy blue coloring (as shown in the above photo). Add in a $30 price drop bringing the new price down to $149, and you have a nice little player on your hands. Now onto that software, hit the jump to read about the software changes and to see some Qik video of the new Zune in action.

Microsoft also announced a new firmware update which will begin rolling out on September 16th. The firmware will be extended to all Zune users so no need to buy a new player just to get some cool new features. They’re not even going to charge for it – way to go Microsoft! You made a lot of Zune lovers happy and a lot of iPod owners jealous with that decision. So what does this new firmware bring to the table?

First and foremost, you get a new “Buy From FM” feature that integrates the WiFi with the built-in FM radio. Like the song you hear on the radio? With a few clicks you can purchase and download it to your Zune. Nice concept but we wonder if we will use it. How many of us even listen to FM radio anymore? Next up, you will get “anywhere, everywhere” wireless access to the Zune Marketplace where you can download or stream your music to your player. We know that ubiquitous access to an online marketplace is not unique to the Zune but it is a much needed and much anticipated upgrade. Lastly, the new Zune firmware expands the game collection found on the Zune. Texas Hold Em and Hextic will be included with plans for expansion that hopefully (pure speculation here) will include some user-generated games and some of those titles on the Xbox Arcade marketplace. You can see a teaser of the included games in the video above. The video is courtesy of the folks at Zunluv who have put together a nice multimedia collection of many of the new features in action. So we get some expanded storage, some new colors, and some nifty new features for the Zune, it all sounds great for us Windows users. Mac users need not apply as no mac support for you. Don’t feel badly, you got your turn already today.

What is that thing? That is the most amazing device I’ve ever seen…. you mean it actually stores and can play your music at the same time. Why didn’t somebody think of that earlier???!!! Maybe I should get my company to copy that idea… we’ll make millions! Everybody will love it. Microsoft I’ve got to hand it to you guys… you just get it!

When are they just going to start calling it by its real name….. “The Lame”

Gosh, I gotta love how MS keeps adding things that don’t matter. Why is it that I still cannot delete on the fly? I want to love my Zune, but after a couple feature updates, it make me hate it more and more.
I’m kind of glad that the Lock button at the top broke….it’s going to force me to buy a new MP3 player. I hope Creative or iRiver come up with something good within the next couple of months. I’m sick of my Zune80. And no matter how much people try to defend the Zune software, it still runs painfully slow on my Core 2 duo machine and is a pain to navigate through, especially for Podcasts which is 90% of my use.

Now, only if the Zune worked on Macs, this would be awesome. When will Microsoft realize this?!

mp3 players are dead. every phone now plays music and videos. who wants to carry another redundant device around?

  • Deaf

does it offer closed captioning support?

I am not sure mp3 players are dead yet. Maybe on the way out but not dead yet. They have two things going for them. First they have a better interface and more features than a cell phone. My Cowon D2 can bookmark, will resume playback where I stopped, and supports audible books. Can my LG Dare do that? Nope. Maybe someday a cell phone will incorporate those features and more but that is still in the future.

Secondly, the sound quality of my Cowon blows the Dare out of the water. There is no comparison. The Cowon has a much fuller sound with all sorts of equalizer options to tweak it to your liking. My Dare has a flat sound and only has about 8-10 preset equalizers. Sure if you listen to factory car speakers, you cant tell the difference but put on a pair of even mediocre quality headphones and the difference is glaringly obvious.

at least for me, I don’t mind carrying a small second device to get the additional featuresand better sound quality a dedicated mp3 player has.

I am keeping my eye out for new things from iriver as well. I had the clix2 for a while and really liked it.

Watching the hundreds and hundreds of Zune owners get an update is a lot like hearing your friend who finally got his dog to stop peeing all over the house, even though he still shits on the carpet: nice, but not nearly enough to make up for all the crap (literally) that he is still going through.

2 reasons mp3 players are not dead.

1 – as mentioned… Sound Quality. Even with a PDA, the sound quality is still not as good as a dedicated mp3 player.

2 – storage. I can buy a 160 GB iPod, or I can buy a much smaller storage card for my Phone.

If I’m a music lover – I’ll take the mp3 player over my phone. Sure the phone works great for the average person who just wants to listen to some music now and then, but if your iPod is more than that to you – you’ll want a dedicated device.

Now, start making a 160 GB iPhone, and we can talk business! LOL

all in one devices are the only way forward. even digital cameras will become obsolete in a few years when we can get canon like quality in a phone. very few companies are strong in more than one area (sony, samsung) and the rest (apple, motorola, canon etc.) will have to pair up to get decent products or die slow deaths. this guy agrees with me:
