Nokia E71-2 reception issues? Mmm

General

There’s word on the big bad Internets that the E71-2 is having a bit of reception problems. If you’re a Nokia fan, you know that’s pretty hard to believe. But, we can tell you that the E71 does in fact suffer from a horrible reception problem. While our Bold and iPhone 3G are constantly on 3G, our E71 has never even picked up a 3G signal. Additionally, we’re only getting 1 bar on EDGE sometimes! What’s the quick fix? Well, as dumb as this may seem (though the out of place bright red power button is pretty damn dumb), the only place to integate the cellular radio antenna was on the bottom back. It’s pretty much the only roomy place on the device where there is no metal. If you’re suffering from reception issues with the E71, try this… first, completely cover the bottom back plastic piece with your hand, and check out the number of bars you have. Then, grab the phone just at the very top by the ear piece, and hold it for a couple seconds. Did your reception just skyrocket? Yeah, ours too. There’s only one issue with this… most people, you know, hold the phone in their hand because they want to… uh… use it. Anyone out there finding the same thing? Hit us up!

    VERY BAD MODEL E-71-2 NOKIA

  • Stephen

I upgraded my phone which was an sony ericson to the nokia E71 (the last time i had a nokia was in 2001), and to be honest while the qwerty keyboard is great (though the buttons will irratate people who chew their nails), i am disappointed because of reception issues (im from australia), and lack of “fun” in the phone.

it is very frustrating to have 3/4 to full reception and then attempt to make a call and the reception goes to nothing, then for it to go back up, only to drop when you again attempt to make a call. i am mystified why this is, and how being no more than 50metres from a cell tower i had no 3G reception let alone 3.5G. maybe its a service provider issue (im with “3″)?????

in terms of lack of fun, maybe ive missed something in the set up, but emicons are not displayed in the same “fun” way, instead they are the crude things that you have to make yourself (unlike the sony ericson which has the emocons already made up) and unless you know what they mean you will be mystified when people send them to you.

the camera is also crap, but since i carry around a digi compact its not a huge issue, but seriously why have a stupidly small “3.2mp” camera that cant do the job?? put a 1mp-2mp camera in and solve that problem.

prob wouldnt go this phone again.

Yeah, I have had calls drop on me and couldn’t figure out why. Now I know. I like this phone. I guess I’ll have to learn to hold it with kid gloves!

I have the E71 made in Finland US version! I have reception issues constantly! Most of my friends with this phone have reception issues! Your story is right on target! People are just oblivious and idiots and have no idea what they are talking about! Try owning 30-40 other nokia phones and then come back to me

I have a Nokia E71-2 made in Finland. I cannot pick up a 3G signal anymore and I receive very few of my incoming calls. I drop calls – the recpetion is awful.

I agree that this is strange because Nokia is known for dynamite reception and my past Nokia’s are evidence of this.

This phone was an aggressive design by Nokia with respect to thickness, weight and capabilities. I would say that they didn’t do a good job.

I have since replaced with a Samsung BJ2 and the reception issues are all gone. Go figure.

I have the E71 on the 3 network in the UK…I thought nokia were market leaders in mobile phone design etc..WHAT a load of crap the E71 is.Reception is VERY poor, the phones keeps switching on/off by itself, keeps freezing and have to remove battery..I exchanged the phone for another E71 and same problems..avoid the Nokia E71.I’m going back to Sony.

Found this web site after complaining to ATT about the E71x because of reception problems, dropped calls, etc. Just dropped an incoming call as I type this. This review is right on target.

Aussie here. I love my E71 but it has the same problem :( Another one I have is that it will drop the signal completely and won’t pick it up again until I restart

  • daz

daz here (UK) and i am having a horrendous time with my E71, as i am getting the same problem as aussie steve. i had a sony k850i for 18 months on 3, no problems at all. upgraded at christmas and suffered the signal drop problem almost every day since then! 3 seem to think i am being obstructive by not seeing it as a problem having to restart the the phone to reaquire the signal……but now 3 have told me that even though it’s a known fault they will only exchange it for the same model!!!!

    Hi All,

same thing here in Poland. The operator I use is Era and, while with my Nokia 6120 Classic I can download and surf at 3G/3.5G speed, most of the times with the E71 I cannot go faster than EDGE. Any idea if Nokia solved this issue?

  • Ashleighh

I have a E71 also from australia, my recpetion never works. It once said i had four bars of reception and let me get text messagers but would not let me recieve calls. I took it back to 3 (my provider) and they said it must of been my area. I really just want to smash my phone sometime. Nokia has really dissapointed me.

I am very appreciative of this discussion and feel a little dumb for not realizing my E71 reception issues were due to the antenna issue. I acquired an AT&T 3G Microcell unit hoping that would help with reception issues in my home, but still had a serious reception drop every time I made a call. After some use and testing, I discovered that the problem seems to lie with my phone, which you guys validated here. Check out my crappy video if you want to see what you’re already experiencing.

  • Dingdon

    I don’t have reception problems with E71-1.

I (in India) have been using the Nokia E71 for about 18 months. No issues with the reception at all except in areas where the telecom providers signal is weak and other phones do not work. My E71 has worked well and I love the phone. I bought a E72 two months back and it works perfectly as well.

It seems like in other commentators had an issue because of the mobile service provider and not because of the phone. I do not understand that though US is proudly proclaimed as a free country yet it seems like they have the worst mobile service provider which is AT & T and the common citizen can do nothing about it. It is time the citizens of US got some better service providers.

Gee it’s hard to read negative comments that people make when someone states that they really ARE having 3G problems…
My N95 and 6120 have all had brilliant reception, but E71, not a bar until I get into town…
Doesnt matter how I hold my mouth, my butt, my ear, it simply gets shit service, to no service and has nothing to do with my provider…

  • Luke

I USED to love nokia. I’ve owned several of them and always praised them. Then I got the e71. Its a beautiful looking phone. But that’s it. It has the shittiest reception of any phone I’ve owned. Bottom of the barrel Moto’s have better RF reception than this turd. I will never buy a nokia again because of this “flagship” model. WTF were they thinking releasing this turd? Its almost as bad as Iphone 4 (but not quite, shame on apple for their rubber band fix). And I don’t want any idiot telling me its a provider issue, I never switched providers, and my replacement blackberry has great reception at all times in places that the e71 shitter wouldn’t.
Feels good to get that off my chest.

  • Luke

Did I mention I fucking hate this phone?

  • Kipruto

Trust me I also own the Nokia E71-2 made in Finland and this is just total crap. No 3G reception, phone calls jz get disconnected, freezes like forever and simply doesn’t work for me. I think they should recall these phones jz like Toyota.

  • Kipruto

Jz forgot. Am in Kenya and this phone should be recalled. I always had my Money on Nokia but on this one Nay. Nokia wasted me big time. I hope someone from Nokia Company is reading this and stop the manufacture of these bogus phones…

  • alexzy

mine is cool i enjoy it but my keybord is bad

  • Agrosac

I have been facing exactly the same problem. The moment I move the phone to talk, the signal just simply disappears. So, they want us to keep the mobile phone stationary, I guess…..

Even otherwise the signal is not as good as it is in the other, 5 times cheaper phone in my household.

I am totally pissed with my Nokia E71
