S60 Touch Screenshots Revealed, Sort of

Rumor

Those who have been wondering exactly what the new S60 Touch UI will look like are in for a treat this morning. The first round of screenshots are making their way around the internet and they depict a few different areas of the UI. “Screenshots” is a term we use loosely however. Not to be a buzzkill, but these images weren’t actually captured on a device running the upcoming S60 9.5 OS. Instead, they’re from a beta of an upcoming version of Nokia’s S60 theme-building software Carbide.ui. Either way, they give us a nice taste of things to come. It looks like, well, S60. The addition of some larger touch-friendly menu buttons seems to be common to each screen. Don’t worry about losing valuable real estate though; the 480 x 640 VGA resolution should accommodate the new buttons nicely assuming we see some decent screen sizes from Nokia’s touch devices. The one button that troubles us can be seen in the images after the jump – a screen rotation button. Does this mean that we shouldn’t expect automatic screen rotation on the Tube? Lame. The upcoming 5800 XpressMusic will surely have an accelerometer, why not use it for more than just camera orientation? Hit the jump for two more images.

Glad to see these emerging, even if it is just from the Theme Developer.

That said, I am really disappointed in the way Nokia is releasing the Tube. Despite featuring it in Dark Knight (or a mock-up concept, as they call it), they missed a huge marketing opportunity. Imagine if they had marketed it for a few weeks before the movie release, and then had it in stores on opening night? Wow!

Before the iPhone this would have been something to look forward to, but these days Nokia just proves it is way behind, has lost focus. And no, I am not a Apple fanboy, use both E61 and N95… :-)

HOLY COW! I hope they have an accelerometer otherwise…

I hate with a passion those damn scroll-bars in mobile devices, they are soo 2001! It amazes me how unintuitive software can be, in this day and age.

These screen shots look like the regular old S60 screen with touch UI added. It looks nice, but iPhone’s touch UI is better. iPhone has unlocked versions overseas already. Wonder when they will have them on ebay?

Siam, from looking at the GUI, there seems to be at least one button for rotation, so the inclusion of an accelerometer is questionable.

Or the accelerometer might be present in all models?

  • YpoCaramel

    *might not, I apologize
