Nintendo Wii takes top spot in US console wars

General

For the first time since it hit the American market, the Nintendo Wii can claim to be the most popular console in the United States. Overtaking the venerable Xbox 360, the Wii now has the greatest lifetime penetration of any next-gen console currently available. 10.6 million Wii’s have been sold, compared to 10.5 million Xbox units. Given the Xbox’s considerable head-start on sales numbers, this is a particularly impressive feat. Sure, the upcoming Xbox 360 60GB might help Microsoft gain some ground, but given Nintendo’s steady progress, we’re pretty sure the company will continue to prove a formidable opponent to both Microsoft and Sony. Wait, who’s Sony again?

Sony? They’re the folks who make the most future-proof, best priced, overall best working Blu-ray player, that *also* happens to play games. But with all the time that’s needed to keep BGR updated, I can understand how you might not have heard about Blu-ray. :)

Thanks for validating my choice in consoles. All this talk of a blu-ray yadda yadda and then it *also* plays games???

Playing games shouldn’t be an afterthought for a console. When Square decides to make Final Fantasy for the xbox as well, you know Sony is in trouble. Well played Microsoft. As for Nintendo, they’re the old timers in this, no need to tell a war veteran well played. They’re the tactical geniuses here.

Wow who’s Sony? Wow well in my opinion, Sony is right up there with the XBOX 360

Nintendo Revolution has come a long way. Now if I only had motion plus to feel the joy :)

  • Ryan

imagine how many they would sell if they were actually in stock!!

  • badChad

    Marketing genius.

There’s an endless supply of accessories for the Wii too. Crossbows, steering wheels, “fitness pads” etc.

Accessories alone will keep them in front.

dude do you not check your facts? it’s going tobe a 60GB 360, not 80GB

ahh come on now. the ps3 outsold the xbox 360 almost 2 to 1 last month, the ps2 is still the best selling console of all time, and the psp just sold over 10 million units. “sony bashing” is getting kinda old.

Interesting to see that the Wii currently is the most popular console in the US. I just wish there were more good games for the Wii, it’s not that many big titles. Not really many titles I’m looking forward to, but there are a lot of titles for the PS3 I’m excited about. Lookinf forward to Mad World for the Wii.

I want the Wii because it looks fun, the PS3 for Blu Ray and the 360 for netflix

  • B

hannibalchew said it all. The same thing over and over gets old. With all the talk about the overly expensive, no game having, late to release PS3, it still sold faster than PS2 in the same time, isn’t that far behind 360, and has been outselling 360 month over month. I wouldn’t touch a Wii even is one was given to me free. I would give it to my girlfriend.

  • Peyton

Oh really, you got a girlfriend? That is almost as intriguing and mystifying as the Wii lol

The Wii has what no other competing console can have- Nintendo’s first and second party developers. Thus, they can get away with weak hardware and minimal features, because the games are worth it.

    Wii = Atari 2600 – retro cool

    Biggest disappointment ever.

…and BTW is there any chance anybody actually believes these two devices are aimed at the same market segment?

Wii is for kids and fat adults who think a video game is just plain good exercise.

  • Galvatron

Yeah the wiis a good party system but beyond that
it suax as somebody stated thers not that many tittles % at best the accessoies Meh. this was about the samw level of popularity th N64 had in the 90′s there wern”t that many tittles beyond golden eye and perfect dark after the public caught on to the fact that ther an’t any real intersting games byond that the system took a crap. also nitendo can’t really get past the 12 year old mark.

Sony an M$ have the popular tiles for all the best selling genres they have the library. somthing nintendo dosn’t have. nintendo is guaranteeing sales by shorting supply chains and Artificialy generating high demand.

got the ps3 a couple of months ago, worth every penny and people sleep on the siaxis controller. want the wii next. i was going to get the 360 until my friends broke down 2 weeks after she purchased it (and shes an xbox fanatic). then last month when i went to the store to purchase one, there was a boy w/his mother in front of me who had just went through his second defective 360. the mom was blacking out threatening to sue gamestop and microsoft for faulty equipment. that prettymuch made me hold off on getting the system. im going to wait until they fix the bugs on that system before i even think of purchasing a 360
