Opera Mobile 9.5 Beta 1 Released

News of the latest build of Opera’s ever-popular Opera Mobile browser has been floating around for a while now as anticipation grew. Now it’s here and well, it’s looking really good. Opera has given version 9.5b a pretty extensive overhaul both inside and out. Some highlights from Opera’s site:

  • Pan and zoom – Using the same technology found in Opera Mini, Opera Mobile 9.5 defaults to full Web page viewing and allows users to pan and zoom into their desired content in just a few clicks.
  • Save pages and/or images – With a click, simply save your selected content and send via email or MMS to your friends.
  • Improved user interface – Opera has completely renovated its mobile UI. Cleaner and more intuitive, the new UI is designed for quick and easy navigation.
  • Improved standards support – Opera remains steadfast in its commitment to make the Web accessible for all. Opera Mobile 9.5 is the most standards-compliant mobile browser available. It is based on Opera’s latest core rendering engine, Presto 2.1.
  • Faster – Opera has always been among the fastest browsers — if not the fastest — available. Opera Mobile 9.5 beta continues this fine tradition with noticeable speed improvements over Opera Mobile 8.65 and IE Mobile.

There are a whole bunch of known bugs in this early release and of course Opera asks that you notify them of any additional issues you might discover via the Opera Mobile forum. In terms of future plans for this latest release Opera lists widget support, Opera link, gears and Symbian support. In the meantime, if you’re packing a Windows Mobile device you need to install this asap. Compared to Internet Explorer Mobile, umm, actually just about anything is better than Internet Explorer Mobile.

    Don’t think it can compare to Skyfire. I’ll give it a try just in case, but SF will be hard to beat.

    From what I understand, unlike Skyfire, Opera is not a server rendered model. So if Skyfire’s servers go down, you are SOL. Opera is more like a desktop browser, its slower because your device has to do the rendering. Still, I would rather not depends on an outside service to view my content. Nevermind the privacy implications.

    dont like opera at all. Ive tried them before and thought i would give this one a shot but still dont like it plus it seems to be slower than ie mobile, way slower

    I’m on Verizon and wanted to get a phone that could sync its contacts with my Mac’s address book. It would be my first smartphone, so I didn’t want to go real expensive, and I was considering the Palm Centro.
    But I’ve read the browser is poor on this phone. I understand Palm’s Java license has expired, but is there another link to download the java program needed to install Opera Mobile?
    As an alternative, does anyone know if the LG Dare can be synced with a computer address book/contacts? The reviews I’ve read elsewhere say it can’t.

    I had a Sprint Touch and i was running the Diamond version. i’d have to say this browser was a good competition for safari mobile. now i have a q9c… smartphone winmo standard version PLEASE!!!!!

    Im not gonna lie its good, just slow and a lil buggy but hey its beta…

    20% memory useage = fail.
    No flash support = fail
    Shitload of options = pass
    smooth scrolling = pass
    tabbed browsing = PASS!

    I’ll stick with Skyfire, but OM9.5 is ok. Even if Skyfire is server supported (just like Opera Mini), it’s still the best browser for WM.

    Great browser, but why does it default to the crappy WinMo keyboard to input text. I have a Touch Dual, and both the hardware heyboard (obviously) and the software keyboard are far superior to it. That’s my only gripe though.

    The worst part of this browser is it renders all content from OPERA servers. Those servers track user data and user browsing habits!
