Welcome Back, Google Gphone Rumors

Rumor

While the image above is a design originally conceived for Samsung, it represents the work of San Fransisco-based product design and development firm Ammunition Design Group. Why should you care? Well beyond the fact that their site is packed full of amazing designs done for huge companies including Panasonic, Dell, Nike, HP, Wells Fargo, Microsoft and more; Ammunition may be the team helping make the much-rumored Google Gphone a reality. Last year there was plenty of buzz surrounding the possibility of a Google-baranded handset, however most of it was squashed shortly after the announcement of Android. Even still, at no point did Google really deny the claim that it was working on its own handset. As of today, consider those rumors back in full force as Techcrunch reports state that a Gphone is most likely in the works. The article cites two main reasons for the claim:

  1. Hollywood Reporter Dan Cox’s recent piece stating, “The trio of Google execs also used the opportunity to talk about the inroads the company is making with its own branded mobile phone as a replacement for the iPhone,” after an interview with Google’s top execs Brin, Page and Schmidt.
  2. “A good source” that swears Ammunition is currently designing a “seriously beautiful” Gphone for Google.

If the rumors are true, this will definitely have a huge impact on the handset market as we know it. A few big handset manufacturers have run the game for quite a while now and Google could be the second “newcomer” to hit the market in just a few years and make a huge dent in the business.

The Gphone and Android platform should be something to reckon with!

…and this is why I’m waiting until next year before I even consider upgrading to a new phone (there may even be proper carrier competition in Canada by then!)

What I don’t understand is why all the cloak and dagger crap. If your making a phone let us know. That way I don’t lock into a contract with another carrier. I would gladly wait 6-12 months if I knew Google was making a phone to see how it stacks against other makers handsets at the time. Seems silly

I’m just hoping Google does the two thing Apple didn’t: make this thing available to any/all networks and at a descent price. Do the one thing we hoped the jEsusphone would do and change the way handsets are marketted and sold here in the US.

Ha! it is obvious that they dropped the rumor so that people would pass on the iPhone, it is a good strategy for Google, if in fact they have a gPhone on the works. Also, this works to google’s advantage in their efforts to push out Android in their partner’s headsets. I guess time will tell.

Looks more like the Google Failphone to me.

Hardware phones are very far removed from Google’s original business. At least Apple was making mp3 machines and computers; the iPhone uses many of the same skills. I’m not saying a phone business won’t succeed, but they’ll have to enter it in a big way or risk ending up like Motorola (a telecommunications giant with now spinning off its phone business), or else not making much money off its phone business but hoping it’ll boost the android business, which in turn helps Google dominate the mobile search industry.

I don’t see this happening.. Google can’t make hardware! They can’t even get Android out the door yet!

Who cares if basically the entire world will have an iphone by the time any announcement is made (if you’ve tried to get your hands on an iphone this week, you know what I’m talking about).
