Sprint joins the party, caps unlimited data at 5GB

News

We think it’s officially time for all major US carriers to be prohibited from using the word “Unlimited” in their data plan marketing materials. Following on the heels of Verizon and AT&T, Sprint has made the decision to cap their “Unlimited” data plan at 5GB of monthly usage. According to a leaked internal memo, the company is also going to impose a 300mb limit on off-network usage. The cap is set to go into effect on the 13th of July. The good news, however, is that this might give anyone eager to leave the carrier an ETF-free window, provided the change constitutes a “material breach of contract” on Sprint’s end. If you do decide to stay, however, consider yourselves warned as anyone caught in violation of the new limits may find themselves kicked off their current plan, banned from Sprint for life, burned with a flaming stick, or bitten to death by Dan Hesse.

In all fairness, 5gigs a month is a lot of data. Unless your downloading movies like crazy, this won’t be a problem for 99% of user of this service.

Yeah but the point is to not call it “unlimited” because it IS limited…to 5GB.

It’s always interesting to watch a company state “unlimited” and then a few months later go through the “holy crap” stage. You would have thought Sprint would have learned from Verizon.

Yes! I’ve been looking to ditch my EVDO (as the apartment I recently moved into has poor service, my last one had excellent. I used to use this as my sole internet connection, but it was too unstable. This may be what I need.

they will still advertise unlmited data access on aircards since this does not apply to business accunts.

These are soft limits anyways. No overages.

Sprint overcharged my small (US) company for over $50,000.00. We caught them doing it and now they refuse to refund the over-payments. You can read the full story at http://www.sprint-really-sucks.com

    Wow, just wow.
I thought that there could be one freaking promising cdma carrier on earth, but my faith in these guys just went way down. I know I’ve downloaded plenty more than that in a month. I wanted sprint for tethering, but not any more. Someone wake me up when I no longer have to go to japan to get unlimited data.

I MEAN NO MORE PORT BLOCKING, TMO!

But I still love my 5.99/month EDGE, if there were only a centro to go with it.
