iPhone’s Safari YouTube support

Well, we just started really messing around with the latest iPhone SDK and OS, and came across something that’s pretty cool. Finally we have YouTube support in the web browser! Don’t get extremely excited though; this is not Flash support. It’s a plugin that enables you to click on an embedded YouTube video, which will then in turn open up the movie player and stream the video. This has worked with every single video we’ve tried so far, but does not work on YouTube.com as that checks for an installed Flash player.     Umm, okay, but don’t you think flash lite 3 would have gone a lot further with native flv support, Jobsy, especially considering Adobe seems content to give it away almost freely these days? C’est la vie…

    Didn’t the iPod touch already do this? I know if I browse a youtube video and click it in Safari it opens in the youtube application

    You’re right about the iPod doing something like this already w/ YouTube links on the web. The “wipe” transition and the ability to click on YouTube thumbnails are new features, though.

    Having it work this way is much better than having the video play within the web page. I’ve used YouTube on Skyfire playing videos embedded within the browser and it sucks. Being able to see the whole video full screen is much much better… similar to the way TCPMP does it with the Flashbundle.

    So they just built in the transmorgify bookmarklet. This capability has been available since last year on all sites with embedded youtube videos by using transmorgify. Don’t even need to jailbreak to add this functionality now. Too bad it’s only for you tube videos.

    This is pointless, what’s the point of a YouTube app. if you can just go there from the web browser?

    this works also with pages that have video formatted in quicktime as well. theres also a safari add on in installer that let you do this.

    As you are working with the SDK, I have a question that I’d like to ask you having to do with the iPhone simulator that is included in the SDK.

    Since the iPhone simulator plays on the desktop where I can make screen movies, the simulator represents a solution to those of us who want to talk about this device to people who want and need moving visual imagery. For example, showing how chapters and captions are used on the iPhone and iPod touch would be much richer if a screen movie could be shown.

    However, the simulator does not include all of the apps or simulations thereof that a regular iPhone or iPod touch has. Moreover, I see no way to add media such as my demo movie for chapters and soft captions.

    So, is there anyone working on correcting this so that credible screen movies of the iPhone interface at work can be made?

    Alternatively, I’d love to have whatever it is that Steve Jobs uses in his keynotes to talk about and illustrate the iPhone and iPod touch. All you see is a wire going from his iPhone to what I assume is a hardware (projector) device under the covered table.
