Garmin NuviPhone coming to AT&T?

News

If the contents of a leaked consumer survey from Garmin are to be believed, it looks like the answer is yes. Following a series of questions about user habits and preferences, Garmin drops a real bomb, asking survey-takers if they would be inclined to purchase a Nuviphone if it was offered by AT&T for a 2-year subsidized price of $499, requiring a $20/month data add-on that includes unlimited browsing and GPS navigation. $499 is, umm, a little high for an unproven device, but we’re certainly a fan of the $20/month data add on, especially considering this thing packs full HSDPA and GPS support.

$500 for a SUBSIDIZED (read = contract) device? That’s some pricey business. For $500, you can get an unlocked N95-3 (which also supports AT&T’s HSDPA and has GPS) and get the Garmin Mobile XT GPS software on it. Sans contract.

Oh man, it’s getting more crowded at the top.

My first instict is to think Garmin’s entry can’t be a winner off the bat, but these guys aren’t dumb either.

This is cutting edge news, thx.

Any details on memory size and if it’s expandable?

I have an iPhone but I dig this phone.. not sure I would fork over five Cs though.

id have to see it to justify half a yard on the price

Personally I would go $299-349, I mean c’mon it’s not like anything in it is new technology but other than that it sounds like it would be great. If this does go to att then my next locked phone would be this…screw the 9000.

Garmin’s done an incredible job with integrated aircraft avionics and instrumentation systems. Their first lcd panel instrumentation system for small aircraft(Garmin G-1000) was (and still is) the best system available right from the start. Can’t wait to see this phone… (although I do love my Curve)

price will come way down by launch

I have Iphone and I still can’t believe all it can do.( But… I’m now on my 4th phone ( under warrantee… )

I have had Garmin on my boats for years and never have had one problem … I recently bought their 12″ 5000 “TOUCH SCREEN” GPS / RADAR / etc System. Nobody else even offers Touch Screen.

If Garmin comes out with a phone…. it will have great features and work.

The price is high but with Garmin you get what you pay for plus.

But I am disappointed with the ATT link. I hate ATT. Look at a bill from them… They must have spent a lot of time to design a bill that is next to impossible to figure out. Why? Because they don’t want you to understand. Guess why!

Do you know that the corporate office of the old ATT wireless had to have an unlisted phone number. To make sure that they would not be bothered. they even told the management of the office building they were in to never give their phone number out.

I would rather go with whatever the phone I can get for free and buy a separate Nuvi. Why do you want everything in one piece? On top of that, why do you want to pay monthly fee for GPS feature when you don’t need to? After all only thing I do with my phone is to make phone calls and text messages, and I want my phone sit in my pocket and my PND in my car……two different places.

All the new cars in 5 year time will come with GPS feature as standard equipment like CD player and XM radio. Garmin needs to focus more on working with car manufacturers and car stereo OEM suppliers instead of screwing around with this cellphone thing. Again, the phone stays in your pocket while GPS stays in your car.

I doubt this is for AT&T. Indirect store managers have REALLY had it drilled into us that data/text/etc. plans are EVEN DOLLAR AMOUNTS. Just a thought.

I for once prefer to have all in one. Only one charger to bring along when travelling and you have your music, radio and gameboy packed in the same device. And who did not forget where you parked either it be in Paris or in LA, not to mention finding your way walking around in a forign City. You also have security – only one button to push to get help on your exact location e.g. when skiing. And so on…
