New iPhone 2.0 firmware has YouTube plugin for Safari!

Exclusive

You heard it here first, people! The latest version of the iPhone 2.0 firmware that was just seeded to developers has a YouTube plugin for MobileSafari.app! We’re not sure at this point if this is using the same method as the native YouTube app that just works in Safari or if this is some sort of "Flash" support, if you will. We’re going to dive a little deeper and try and figure this all out for you, so we’ll keep y’all updated!

omg! really? PLEASE FIND OUT MORE!!!!
how can i get a copy of this?
and post a video please boy genius!!!!!

  • TareX

Wow. Apple can make anything lousy sound like good news. So in other words, instead of full flash-content support for a desktop-like browsing experience, it only has some lame “youtube video plugin”.

  • Marco

yes, yes, a video will be good

  • Robert

Yea, definetly post a video and in that video do you think you can also explore the new Interface menu in settings? Please

  • Justin

Thats pretty sick. I’m excited for this new update :)

  • TedB

This makes June seem so much farther away… urg…

I video of this in action would be perfect!

  • james

Somebody que Galvatron, he’s missing out on slamming apple with poor grammer and typing skills!

  • Kevin

    MMS? Still no mms? wtf..

  • ted

People use MMS? In 10 years neither I nor my friends have ever used MMS. I thought it was what drunk yobs used to sent their happy slapping pictures around whilst getting gouged themselves from 50p messages?

  • jacob

if you install beta 2.0 that you get in the developer package.. does it brick your phone?

  • wild homes

it is a confusing move– if it’s not flash, then the only really logical reason for this is just for embedded youtube videos to run within the page and to allow users to access their actual youtube account favorites and stuff (because the youtube bookmarks on the phone are maintained separately on the device?) that seems like a lot of work for Apple to code just for kicks. and if you’d go through the trouble of coding a plugin just for youtube, why not, you know, actual code a plugin for flash? I can’t see anyone wanting to load the actual youtube frontend in Safari just for searching, especially on EDGE.

    mysteries!

No, it doesn’t brick it as long as you “PWN” your iPhone using the iPhone Dev team’s new tool.

    http://iphone-dev.org/news:pwnage_release

You make a custom 2.0 .ipsw and then load that on the iPhone and you’re good to go! Exchange works a hell of a lot better on this build so far, and it seems more stable overall. One bug is that the A-Z letters in Contacts don’t actually work, so scrolling through 1,000+ contacts is a bitch.

  • Kaloo

So now we get a plug-in to give us the “real” internet, but it’s still not the “real” internet.

  • King Chronic

yo BG i have been getting blamed for some leaks of pwnage that i did not leak and that comment makes it seem like you have it so please confirm that all i gave you is the patched files and the soft upgrade needed to get it running to avoid confusion.

  • http://www.bgr.com The Boy Genius

Right, we used the soft upgrade method for this. I was just clarifying that in theory, that’s how you are supposed to do it.

  • pretzpup

the guys @ Products were speculating on this earlier. i don’t get it, youtube uses flash, so is apple mod’ing their youtube player from the youtube app to fit within youtube? why all this headache? why not let flash be flash and run on the iphone?

  • LogicGod

Well Pretzpup, it’s for the same reason they’ve been building boxes to support their proprietary software instead of licensing it out to developers to use on a range of hardware platforms. We may not like it, but it’s the route Apple has chosen to go.

We may never see a fully flash-enabled, network-sharing, full bluetooth-profile enabled phone with extra-long battery life because of it.

I’m sorry to rain on the parade but where are the useful updates…??? Like Flash, video recorder capabilities, etc., etc…

    Hi Guys,

My preference would go with Flash Lite 3 on the iPhone, have a look here:
    http://www.symbian-freak.com/news/008/04/adobes_flash_lite_3_1_for_oems_available.htm

So far so good, it means that mobiles with fl3 will get the exact same web content as computers. Flash developers just need to use as2 instead of as3 in their flash animations, and their work will be accessible from any device(with flash player 9 or flash lite 3.1).

    Let see how it goes..

  • Roland
