Apple doesn’t care about its customers

We here at BGR love Apple products as much as the next guy, but we think this crossed the line a little bit. Thanks to tip from a close friend of the Boy Genius Report, we’ve uncovered a truly amazing exchange between Apple and a customer. The customer, an owner of a recently water-damaged MacBook Pro, called Apple customer care to get information about repair costs. Accepting full responsibility for the water damage, the customer was still subjected to confusing and contradictory information about the repair. Frustrated with his experience, he took matters into his own hands, emailing sjobs@apple.com (a widely acknowledged direct line to high-level Apple customer care). The customer’s email is as follows:

Dear Steve Jobs,

I wanted to write and express my concern about some recent problems that I have had with Apple Care. This week, my MacBook Pro unfortunately sustained water damage. I understand this is entirely my fault but it is still something I would like to get fixed. After three or four calls I was finally able to get a straight answer. While I was happy to get a straight answer, I was not at all happy with the answer. It is very worrisome to me that the only way to get my computer fixed is to pay almost $300.00 up front with no guarantee that this will fix the problem. I was horrified to learn that their is no system to assess the problem and bill once all damage is known. I am reluctant to put money into a problem that could easily grow. I have had three Apple computers in a row. I love using them but I am not sure if my replacement will be one. I feel powerless in the situation and the whole experience has turned me off of the Apple company.

Reasonable? We think so. Shortly after, the customer received the following response:

We find that response totally comical! Don’t you? While we’re guessing Steve Jobs himself wasn’t on the other end of this, it’s certainly a direct response from the @apple.com domain, which is only available to employees of the company. This means that someone directly representing Apple was responsible for this stunt. Come on, Apple. Seriously, this isn’t a good way to treat your customers, though you do get major points for the witty and comical response.

    Seriously are you for real? If you drop kick or spill a bucket or liquid on your computer don’t expect someone to work on it for free when you were at fault. AppleCare does not cover abuse it covers the computer in case the a part fails on it’s own (not with your help). Basically when you buy AppleCare you are betting there will be a problem and Apple is betting that there will not be and please do remember Apple is trying to stay in business and make a profit.

    No Apple notebooks are not at all rugged if your looking for that consider a Panasonic Toughbook or a Thinkpad spill- proof keyboard.

    I think that you are wrong on this. The customer sent in a reasonable request, and was professional and courteous. The response he received was very flippant and rude. No matter what the complaint is, it still should be handled with respect and a level of maturity that is definitely lacking here. If I had read this email before I purchased my MacBook Pro at the end of July, I would have not gone ahead with my purchase.

    Greg- are you for real? No one even mentioned the AppleCare Protection Plan in this entire exchange. The fellow accepted responsibility and just wanted to be able to get his computer fixed without having to eat 300 dollars up front with no idea how much it is going to ultimately cost. No one even made a commentary as to the durability of an Apple notebook. Who says this person was even doing something rambunctuous? It could have just been an accident that this fellow took responsibility for and wanted a transparent repair process. Instead he got a face full of sarcasm from an Apple employee and now rank condescension from some yahoo online.

    Just signed up for an apple ID to try to figure out why I can’t change my internet system preferences on my G4 –

    I live in China, but my Chinese still isn’t great. I’m only allowed to have my language as Chinese with my apple ID – no way of changing it. No contact details to email with regards to changing it.

    I think if your stupid enough to get your 1400.00
    notebook wet you should take responsibility for your own stupidity and stop blaming the manufacturer I think 300.00 is reasonable for a second chance that you don’t deserve in the first place and I worked as an Apple technician and I know for a fact that your computer would have been fixed properly if you were willing to pay for the repairs. Next time put it on your American Express card and let them insure it then you can use it as a surf board if you want too, or you can be more cautious with your expensive electronics dumbass!!

    Hah! I could not feel less sorry for the guy with the water damaged MacBook Pro. I work at an Apple Authorized Service Provider and I see this situation at least once a week. shit 300$ is a cheap quote. What people do not understand is that no water damage case is ever the same, from one case to the next I see different levels of damage but there is always at least 200$ of parts to replace and no guaranty that there will not be any other problems in the future. Suck it up, get insurance, keep your drinks an arms length away from the computer, and don’t come crying to apple after bitching about how much its going to cost when you who dumped a glass of WATER on it. Sure Apple could have been a bit less sarcastic but I am sure that they get all kinds of ridiculous requests all the time so its hard to be sincere with clients. Go buy a Panasonic Tough Book if your clumsy

    I bet Steve wishes he would have thought that one through before hitting the send button. Yes, electronics and water damage do not go well together. Smart alack remarks and good customer service don’t go together either!

    If it’s a ‘pro’ laptop then it should withstand some water getting spilled on the keyboard. Lots of other ‘pro’ equipment does (e,g, consoles, DSLRs (Pentax & Nikon, guitar amps)

    Listening to all the comments from the former apple employees here is just confirming the fact that the company is full of stuck ups who think they’re better then everybody else. Maybe if you came down from your pedestal for a split second you could solve the problem rather then calling this guy an idiot for spilling some water.

    People are missing the point – the guy took responsibility for getting it wet, his complaint is that he cannot find out up front how much the repairs will cost without shelling out $300 first. Lets say the parts with labor are more than the cost of the computer I would want to know that before I pay Apple Care. Auto mechanics work this way they look at the issue give you an estimate then you decide if you should go foreward with the repair or buy a replacment device. If you decide to get a replacment the mechanic may charge you a small fee for the diagnostics but it is less than $300

    Thanks God I’m not the only one that considers absolutely stupid let water fall on top of a computer, any computer, especially an expensive one.

    And no, Bazooka’s, atomic bombs, sulphuric acid, etc.. are all item that MUST stay away from your laptop.

    No sympathy for the wet Macbook owner. He’s upset at having to pay a diagnostic fee to find out just what is wrong. When you dump water on your computer, you can get any number of different problems, and it takes someone time to go in and figure out what the problem is regardless of whether the problem is fixed.

    I suppose AppleCare doesn’t cover water damage – is he expecting that it should cover diagnostic fees for said damage?

    I appreciate Steve’s response. I get sick of suck up PC responses from companies, and this is basically a way of saying tough luck kid, you aren’t going to coerce us into covering something that isn’t a viable part of our business strategy. The PC response would be milquetoast and the company probably couldn’t do anything anyways.

    to get it fixed but don’t care for the lousy attitude.iAlso have mine engraved…….. no one said there is no
    way to refund or exchange with it being engraved.
    Just got a mail about Mothers Day Ipod….. HAVE
    IT ENGRAVED FOR MOM I’ve looked over and over
    with nothing being said that after its engraved you’re
    stuck with it…. only in America.

    How would he react if a customer came into his place of business demanding he work for free?

    Get a thinkpad next time. I had a Starbucks venti drip explode on the keyboard. Worked fine after a little hairdrying.

    oh no!!! Water damage is the worst. had my phone fall into the pool twice this summer!!!!! smh!

    with no warranty, it can be a frighten thing.

    i googled some repair sites and found blackberryplace.com

    they are really good. especially with someone on a budget.

    check them out. Im sure they will be able to fix your blackberry.

    For all the people giving this guy a hard time and calling him stupid for having an accident? have you not ever had an accident in your life before ?? If you say no your a liar.Guy just had an accident no reason to be hostel and insult someone becouse if it.
    Secound, hes not looking to get anything for free at all , and not trying to get anyone to work for free at all , its just a matter of he wants a little reassurance and $300 just for a diagnostic is alot of money , thats not to fix the problem just to look at it. But we keep forgetting the point which is he was polite and apple was very rude and being a smartass pretty much and thats uncalled for , all you have to say is sorry nothing i can do , not a mean hearted f.u.
