Such benevolence is a rarity among retailers like Best Buy, but it seems someone in upper management has a soul. The company has just announced that they will be giving $50 gift cards to anyone who bought a dedicated HD-DVD player on or before February 23rd, 2008. The gift cards are available by way of the company’s website, and should be available to anyone that has a qualifying purchase on record. The site recommends that you have your receipt in hand, but it’s not a necessity. The rebate is also available to anyone who purchased an Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive. While it certainly won’t fully compensate anyone who took the plunge, the perils of early adoption aren’t for the faint of heart, and we think it’s quite kind of Best Buy to step forward and soften the blow.
