Microsoft aquiring Danger Inc. WTF?

News

Ugh! Let’s just hope the Danger OS doesn’t go away (we doubt it will). This actually might make sense, though. With Microsoft in the mix, Danger can now concentrate on the software and integrating new features like 3G, GPS, and Wi-Fi. Also Microsoft is said to be handling the backend system, so we shouldn’t be plagued by the shoddy service and outages anymore. Anyone at all excited about this?

“Microsoft is a global leader with our Windows Mobile software and expanding mobile services,” said Robbie Bach, president of the Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft. “The addition of Danger serves as a perfect complement to our existing software and services, and also strengthens our dedication to improving mobile experiences centered around individuals and what they like.”

The Palo Alto, Calif.-based company provides services that allow people to keep in touch, stay organized and keep informed while on the go through real-time mobile messaging, social networking services and other applications ― all blended together on a single phone that is intuitive and customizable.

“Danger continues to provide an effortless and fun mobile experience for consumers,” said Henry R. Nothhaft, chairman and CEO of Danger Inc. “Now by combining our uncompromised application software and powerful back-end service with Microsoft, we can expand our innovative service offerings even further and take mobility to a new level.”"

Thanks, Travis!

When I worked at Danger, I always felt that both the OS and the data service are the best parts that Danger produced. Yes, the Sidekick is cool and hip, but the software is the best in the mobile industry by far. Better than what’s on the Blackberry and the Trio, and certainly better than MS Mobile.
I sure hope that Microsoft knows that and pushes both. It’s for the good of us, the consumers!

“One word: FLASH!!!…and one phrase: 3G!! Danger os can’t expect to compete with things like the iphone if its stuck “flash-less” and using EDGE. Sidekick users want to be able to customize their browsers instead of being stuck in the past.”

Not quite sure what you mean by “flash-less” (like its “flashy”? or flash memory?) Because it is quite flashy. Flash memory, well hardly any phones use it, and i’m sure many will start soon, so I don’t know what you mean. the iphone only uses EDGE and no Tmo devices use EDGE or HSDPA, although they are working on it. You’re points are confusing or just plain wrong so maybe you should think about whats going on here.

Knut: I agree I like the Danger OS. It’s a toss up for me because while the Palm OS is quite dated, theres a ton of apps for it that I never have to pay a dime for. I can put my music on it and use it as ringtones if I please, its just so customizable. Its still fast and all that.

Danger’s shines in speed of use and ease of use (theres no learning curve, you can do things without looking). Every other smartphone, iphone included, can not touch this. Theres hardly any normal phones that are this fast and easy to use. Microsoft would be stupid to do anything but add some apps and functionality. No major changes plz. Oh and add new devices.
