We know that some people have moral reservations about Wal-Mart and everything, but this one is just too good to pass up. Today only, the mega-retailer is selling a Toshiba HD-DVD player for the unbelievably low price of $98.87. The Toshiba HD-A2 isn’t the most impressive player on the market, not by a long shot, but for under $100, we don’t want to hear any complaints. None. The stores will have limited numbers, so make sure to call ahead before making the trip. Unless Blu-ray can step their budget game up movies like this could prove to push HD-DVD over the top. HD-DVD anyone?

Majority of purchases will be headed to Ebay because I saw these in a few Hot Deal forums; and you know what happens when those greedy people find a bargain. Talk about dumping a product by Toshiba. Bluray still will win out.

This is quite a smooth move to try and take the lead, but I think Blu-ray will win out. Why you ask? Because Blockbuster rents them and they don’t rent HD. If past trends repeat themselves then Blockbuster will be the deciding factor.

  • Synergy

Too early to tell Troy. Regardless if Blockbuster rents Blu-ray or not if there is a huge uptick in HD-DVD players, well then they will have to rent those as well if there is demand.

Blockbuster online member here and they do ship HD-DVD. I wouldn’t worry about Blockbuster too much as they AGAIN lost a ton of money. I don’t think you will see many of their stores 2 years from now.

is there a walmart in nyc ?

Yawn. I already have a DVD player. I don’t need a HD TV, so what’s the purpose of these formats?

BestBuy is following suit now and all their left overs ( since they are discontinuing this model ) are at the 99 dollar price point also.

Jacksonville, Fla. Best Buy stores don’t have the deal…and most of the Wal-marts in town sold out by 9 a.m…….except for one Wal-mart store way out in the wilderness where they don’t know what HD DVD is! I snagged the $98 deal and now I own both formats! Hello Transformers!

blu-ray will not win if they continue to be this arrogant to refuse to cater to the porn industry. History might repeat itself again, Betamax anyone? That’s how VHS won the format, by catering to the porn industry. I won’t buy either one until it is settled or wait til the price drop for the dual format player.

  • BP

This HD-DVD player doesn’t even output 1080p! Yes, it’s still a good deal though.

  • ebernal

Bought mine yesterday at Best Buy and got 7 free dvds…not bad!

  • Who’s Dead

whoever still thinks that the porn industry will help you win needs to think about the industry a little more before posting junk. Back then, there were no medium to bring porn to the house. Vhs allowed that back then, thus they won. Now you have internet and DVD’s, so catering to the porn industry isn’t gonna do crap for your sales. It’s all about low cost equipment and high quality hometheater movies that’ll will win it for the medium.

It’s going to be a tight race, that’s for sure. Did some research and Amazon has the Toshiba with 1080p at around 350.00 while Sony’s least expensive (tabletop) Blu-ray is about a hundred bucks more. So on the surface it would seem that Hd would be taking the lead, and unless Sony drops their prices. But Sony has the PS3 ace in the whole which until most recently was the most popular game system on earth until the Wii came along so now it’s anybody’s guess who will win. I just hope for simplicities sake that there is clear winner and not some hybrid that will play both formats because that will in essence cause us to have to choose between DVD, HD or Blu-ray disc when we rent or buy a movie which is the current situation that we’re in.

I picked up 2 at my local Wally..they sold out by 9AM.

Also, not sure if I can post to other websites, but my BGR brethren should know they have access to free movies…check out this link to pick up your 5 free HD-DVD titles if you went for the Toshiba deal (or bought any other recent HD-DVD player):

I think the PS3 will sell big this Christmas…but I’ve read where movie uptake from PS3 owners is minimal. Basically, they are buying it for a gaming console…not movies…

I don’t think there is a clear winner yet…but if Toshiba continues to drop prices across their entire line as has been predicted, I think by the New Year the studios will back HD-DVD over Bluray.

The combo deal will never go anywhere.

All speculation on my part…but watch…
